A friend of mine worked as a host at a 5 star restaurant in Los Angeles and there were strict orders not to get star-struck and to treat celebrities like anybody else but he said when Don Rickles came in with his wife and some other folks, he couldn't resist and said after everybody sat down, he said, "You know, Mr. Rickles. I grew up watching you with my parents on various talk shows and whenever you were a guest, it was always a big event. Would you please insult me?" And Rickles looked at him and said, "Absolutely not! I only insult people who matter!!" My friend said everybody at the table laughed, and everyone in the restaurant within earshot, including other celebrities, laughed hysterically. A naturally funny man.

Brooks could play a drunk better than anyone and he made you really think he was drunk but the reality was he didn’t drink from what I’ve read about him. His skit with Dean Martin where he plays an airline pilot is hilarious too!

Foster Brooks and Don Rickles were actually the true highlights of any Celebrity roasts they were a part of, and then the one got to roast the other... I was a stage actor for many years and was part of a great group of actors in a small troop and we put on 4 shows a year, with 6 weekends each show. and many of the productions we put on would call for a local "town drunk" and I was typically picked for these rolls as I worked really hard for it. Foster Brooks was my inspiration for those rolls, and many older people in the audience knew what I was doing, and told me I did a great job!
