Warning: Spoilers
I was having a discussion with a friend when we realized that depending on which half of Marathon Man a person prefers, it actually reveals a lot about their personality. The first part of the film seems designed more to please idealistic individuals, people desperately hoping to lead a life that ends up mattering, whereas the second half of the film seems more geared towards those who are pragmatic realists. The dichotomy which emerges is basically between the dream of what you’d like your life to be, as opposed to the disturbing, underlying reality, that nothing is as it first appears and that a person’s false assumptions may leave them entirely unprepared to resist those more ruthless than themselves.

I love Slap Shot, and the Hansens are hilarious. But this video, trying to change it from a comic caricature to justifiable in reality. If you love your family and friends, and will do anything for their team, then violent assault, sucker punching, and ignoring the rules and the laws is all just fine. Winning a game make serious violence far beyond normal hockey, and attacking fans, all excusable. Wow. This is a movie that exaggerates to make a point, so as a movie, it's fun entertainment, a classic. To try to make an argument that their actions are somehow good as a way to really act is moronic. This channel is blocked.

"Are not all political personas essentially invented identities?" The whole Being There concept seems to have inspired a contemporary campaign. Was a certain slow word-salad/Spock-thought dispensing political persona inspired by Chauncey Gardiner?

At 9:50, a good point is made that the two Holocaust survivors acted on their own since seemingly no one cares. I would add that while there are some who are apathetic, there are more who aren't properly informed about the horrors of the Holocaust

They all lived together previous to the movie & on their days off they would drink beer & race slot cars all day long according to Steve Hanson! Reggie's apartment was modeled directly after Steve's Paul Newman & someone from the production went to Steve's to see what a real hockey players apartment looked like! Steve went back to sleep & Newman watched a car race on TV & drank some of Steves beer! All three of the Hansons were offered a multi year contract with the film studio which they declined because they wanted to play hockey not act!

I started to try and figure out what Chance walking on water meant. But then I realized the whole film was about projecting what you thought on to Chance and that is what the films ending encourages you to do. Project what you think the meaning is onto an ending that actually has no meaning but is just something that happens.

Wonderful speculative analysis. Thank you for your hard work on this. Kosinski was an autobiographical writer and a fabulist, not to mention a brilliant man concerned about politics and the future of humankind. That several or all of these versions might be in play is quite possible.

I was watching some analysis on the last scene and jprules2578 from below is completely correct. Since us humans, whether we like it or not, are meaning making machines and once the thought is in our head our mind will create a reality to match it. If the thought never arises that you can't walk on water, then any of us could walk on water. We all create our own reality, but the mind is very limited to the 3D world and our belief system, which is filled up from birth in realities that might not really be. The producer shows this throughout the movie. It is all perception. This movie is brilliant in allowing the viewer to see that and the absurdity of what we think is really. What if the reality we see with our biological sense is not reality? Our little mind can't wrap around the concept well of a multi-dimensional existence is what is really occurring. It it mind bending.

With Kamala unable to articulate anything beyond the BAB’s (Boring as Bromides) something told me I saw this before---somewhere. Thought long and hard and then WALA. College. Movie date. Best hatchet job on liberals ever. The move? The Candidate with Robert Redford. He wins because of his good looks, and the demonization of his GOP opponent Crocker Jarman (actor Don Porter), and celebrity endorsements (Natalie Wood) the uber handsome Bill McKay (Robert Redford) an California Barak Obama (community organizer) doesn’t have a clue (hint hint) but wins and asks his campaign manager Marvin Lucas (the magnificent actor Peter Boyle) “Marvin, now what do I do”?

Some have compared Kamala Harris's campaign for POTUS 2024 to that of Chauncy (Chance) Gardner, played by Peter Sellers, from the sly yet poetic satire 1979 film, "Being There". The comparison is dangerously superficial. Chance is simple-minded but honest and sincere. 😇 Kamala Harris is anything but -- she's "stupid and ambitious on steroids". 🤑😝 If you want to read this film as a parable rather than a satire, Chance is a "Holy Fool" and illustrates the "the meek who inherit the earth" untouched by the worlds contamination.
