Around 50% of people in India rely on non-motorised transport like walking (32%) and cycling (19%) for their daily commute to work. Many cannot afford motorised solutions like scooters and motorbikes, as evident from the 110 million humble roadster bicycles on the roads. To address this issue and enhance livelihood opportunities, Social Alpha and FedEx launched a year-long accelerator program 'Social Alpha Accelerator for Sustainable Last-mile Logistics' with an aim to enable ventures developing affordable personal motorised transportation solutions, supporting them with their product development, Go-to-market strategies, and market access.
The winners of the program were Accelero and Magnes. Accelero has created a cutting-edge, independent, high-ride portable electric engine that
has the capability to retrofit regular bicycles into powerful electric cycles, while Magnes offers electric bicycles with a high-performance motor, combining sustainability and convenience.
