37 - Cinnamon and Stealing Hardware
This week we start off talking about Leo's latest episode of Linux User Space. In episode 5:02, Leo and Dan go over a history of the Cinnamon desktop, and how tightly it's tied to Linux Mint it's self. We then morphed into a conversation about Windows 8, Windows on the command line, and how Gnome 3 seemed to come along about the same time. Desktop design was the hot topic. We then moved on to the APT package manager, and the differences between it on Mint, and the rest of the Debian world. I could write more, but you'd spend more time reading this than you would listening to the show. We get into a lot of stuff.

มุมมอง 17หลายเดือนก่อน
Bill, Leo, Majid, and Joe get together this week to talk about Audacity, Tenacity, Git, Redbox, media servers, and Majid's silly new phone. You're not going to believe this, but AI does come up in the conversation. All of this and so, so much more. Everyone make note of the Neofetch behind Leo's head And by the way, Leo was kidding - Tenacity definitely does not suck.

34 - The Audacity Of Reaper
มุมมอง 172 หลายเดือนก่อน
This week Eric and Bill get into a conversation about proprietary alternatives to opensource software. It starts with us describing how we've both begun using Reaper instead of Audacity for editing the audio for our shows. Let us know what your think. What, if any proprietary software are you using on Linux. Is it just enough that the developers make their software available on Linux? We'd love...

32 - "I Remember Audio Editing."
มุมมอง 153 หลายเดือนก่อน
We're joined by Joe from mintCast fame. The discussion starts off about audio editing and just spins out of control from there. Joe and Leo get into a few discussions about some games available on Steam. We talk a little about the Steam Deck. The Texas heat is a topic. That leads to ideas about how to mitigate the heat in the home. AI in the home, ownership of software (or the lack thereof) and...

27 - A Hot Mess
มุมมอง 246 หลายเดือนก่อน
I ain't gonna lie folks - this one's a train wreck, and you'll see for your self. We did get into a pretty cool conversation about game emulation. Bill ordered one of those little Linux based personal game pads which comes pre-installed with a staggering number of games. That erodes into a back and forth about stuff like D&D as well as Magic The Gathering. As the title suggests, it's a hot mess...

Bill, Leo, and Majid get into first impressions of KDE Plasma 6. That conversation. We talk a little about the best (in our opinion) launchers for Linux desktops. We talk a little about our memories of Windows Vista, 7, and 8. Leo, and Majid hash it out over touchpad gestures. We get into an article on OMG Ubuntu about UXPlay, a tool for mirroring iOS on Linux. Bill talks a little about Xbox cl...

After one gets this setup, is there a way to backup that new GRUB setup and instantly restore it - if one of the Windows major updates messes it up in the future?

The only way I've been able to even do a regular install of Linux on a modern computer is to turn off secure boot. Windows really wants to inhibit Linux anyway it can

i run on separate drives so windows does not break my grub selector and select linux as first boot drive to grub but soon im getting rid of windows altogether

Dual Booting is pretty good, i have to interrup the boot with f1 to switch to linux that first time, after that it boots into Linux every time. to get back into windows, i just unplug my ext. M.2 and it goes straigt to windows when i turn it on

I had the opposite issue on a Win10 machine. Installed Debian 12, grub worked the first time...after reboots the Win10 option no longer appeared in grub. I had to modify the grub conf to NOT probe (probing was already on) and then modify again to probe. After that it worked. Somehow disabling and then re-enabling the probe other OS feature picked up the Win10.

Try installing Linux first and THEN only the Windows! And another thing: Installing into virtual machine is NEVER the same as installing on the phisical hardware!!

I came across your channel while searching for Linux podcasts. My initial impression is that one person's microphone is too loud, while the other has a slightly lower volume. I recommend synchronizing everyone's microphone levels by increasing the volume for the quieter one and decreasing it for the louder one.

I pay for TH-cam Premium. I don't see anything wrong with that. TH-cam needs to both pay the creators and keep its servers running. If they cannot make money from the ads, they need to make money some other way. And it really costs me like 3.25 dollars for me and my wife combined.

Yeah I agree. It just took me some time to come around to it because I'm so used to avoiding giving Google money. But in this case you're right it pays the creators, and it's good value if you use all of the services. I've actually got the whole family on the family plan now and literally everybody uses it.

The thing is that if you are a company that never uses RHEL, bug-per-bug compatibility with RHEL does not matter. If you are customer with the production servers running RHEL, then you care about your development servers being the same. The reason bug-per-bug compatibility does not matter is that you cannot get them fixed anyway. On the other hand, if you use Debian, you can use the exact same version everywhere and then your developments systems will be bug-per-bug compatible with the production systems.

That's actually a good point. It just struck me right from the get-go - for people that are so concerned about being good stewards of the open source community - they should be using centos stream. That way they could be contributing if they care about RHEL that much. You got a point about Debian though.
