Red Hat Screws Up sudo Security
Today, I've just noticed a potential security problem that's been in the sudo configuration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and all of its clones. It's been present since at least as far back as RHEL 8, and is still present in RHEL 10 and its clones. Ironically, sudo is supposed to enhance Linux security, but if it's configured wrong, it can be a definite security problem.

Even though Linux shell scripting has been around for decades, it’s still an essential part of the computing world. One of the main reasons for this is that shell scripting is incredibly versatile. It can be used for a variety of tasks, including system administration, software development, and data manipulation. Shell scripts can also interact with other programs and languages, making them inc...

Red Hat Shoots Itself in the Foot Again

Red Hat shoots itself in the foot again by announcing that they would no longer allow the general public to download the source code for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This will cause problems for the RHEL clone publishers, such as AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. it looks like a limited sudo , that allows him to see more if he wants ... Its a matter of trust - Thanks for your effort ! - 👍
No, it's not limited at all. If you assign this DELEGATING command alias to a user, that user will be able to open visudo, and edit it so that he or she can gain full sudo privileges. If you have a virtual machine handy, give it a try.
@@beginlinuxguru7354 i know thats why i wrote "allows him to see more - if he wants " Your right with your video - Thanks
And the deal is not in Australia either. UPDATE: it is now. Just placed my order. 😊
I dont see a problem there. It's as always. As a root user you better know what you are doing.
True, an experienced administrator would know better than to enable this command alias. But, on the other hand, someone at Red Hat thought that this would be a good idea, so you never know.
Too bad that deal is not in Canada.
Okay, I didn't realize that. I'll contact my publisher to see what we can do about it.
I recently purchased your book Mastering Linux Security & Hardening (third edition) and wanted to know if it's necessary to use the CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-2009.iso because I can't find it on the Centos website. Thanks!
First, many thanks for purchasing my book! As for your question. . . CentOS 7 was still a supported operating system at the time I wrote the book. It has now reached end-of-life, and is no longer supported. So, you can safely ignore any of the chapters that are specifically about CentOS 7. If you need to learn about Red Hat technologies, your best bet is to concentrate on the chapters about AlmaLinux 9, which is a clone of the current version of Red Hat. Ciao, Donnie
Thanks for the quick response!
Great video, thanks. I bought your book.
I agree shell scripting is not obsolete, but for a different reason. Although you can use piping to a certain degree, not all programs have a nice output. That's were Python (and Pearl, I think) shine. The level of control you have over strings is amazing. And although you can use Python to automate tasks on the system, you still have to know which command to run on the shell. That's why I decided to learn Bash, and I love it. I'm not a developer, but I learn a few languages over the years, and Python is by far the simplest language for a beginner. With the shell you have to learn a lot of things about the system. With Python you just have to know how to read English, the keywords are very intuitive. What I mean is, you have to use the right tool for the right task. If the task involves commands, I start with Bash, if it involves data, I start with Python, each one is the best at their own thing. Anyway, that's just my opinion. I found your channel watching your video about Firewalld, it is very insightful, I like your style.
I have 11 year old 27 inchimac , intel 3.6ghz , 4 core, 32gb ram im running MX linux on it and linux runs well on it. Im a huge fan of mac hardware and macos is also solid as a rock. Linux is so increddibly fun and educational its put the fun back into computing for me, who would of thought its so fun to learn how to speak to the kernel through a shell! In the new year i plan on buying a new macbook air m4 but i will also use linux as a daily driver on my imac . Macosx may be my wife, but linux is most certainly my mistress
Donald is this book distro specific? Can the info in this book be applied to any debian based distro???
Yes, it will work for most any Debian-based distro.
Wow.. so it's so much worse and more complicated than I thought... so much for "demystifying it. lol.. This video might as well be in Spanish.. there are so many things I need to learn now, and this video does not make it clear about any of it. I guess I'll come back in a year and watch this again.. after I learn what all these things mean.
Absolutely not. After the kernel maintainers purge, Linux is a losing preposition
Yeah, that was a foolish decision. It blows me away that Linus and the Linux Foundation did that.
I think I asked the question, I was thinking of python too. Shell's piping abstraction is so good that I use that concept in other programming languages.
Yeah, the piping feature is fairly awesome.
If the shell command line matters, then wouldn't shell scripting matter?
If it works, it's good!
Hey Donald. I've been experimenting with ansible playbooks which can push configs to thousands of target machines. I'm currently using Virtualbox to push linux configs out to target machines, and it works great and is quite easy to grasp. The idea is similar to bash scripts. Have you given it a go? P.S. I purchased your e-book "Mastering Linux Security and Hardening" and I'm slowly working through the labs and I'm learning a lot, so thanks.
No, I have to confess that I haven't done much with Ansible as yet. It's been on my to-do list, but I just haven't gotten around to it. Also, thanks much for the kind words about my book!
That is one incendiary thumbnail text. Cheers mate!
Yeah, it is. But, it it's also the exact question that the viewer of my previous video asked.
@@beginlinuxguru7354 😆
Just bought the book, The paper version (And with the e-book) I will soon start to read it! Thanks!
My thought is to avoid all RHEL/RedHat related. Red Hat is trying to extend their market to the SME space. They plan to gobble it up. They also want to capture more enterprises. They will not stop. The drama will ebb and flow, but Red Hat WILL subsume or consume Rocky and Alma. Red Hat Dev. will see the license numbers change. First 12 from 16. Then ever downward to 5 or less. If you stay in Red Hat’s realm, you’re gonna be sorry.
Excelente libro, saludos desde Colombia :)

Ubuntu server, curious that they decided to 86 an offering for time setup during install. I guess simpler to delete it altogether than throw in go/nogo toggle. Nice video 👍
Yeah, I don't understand that decision either. It just seems weird that they did that.
systemd 'get' and 'set' echo PowerShell. Do systemd's 'ctl' functions chain together via pipelines, leveraging object-property blobs like PowerShell? Maybe an analogue to 'get-member' resolving tool is available.
No, the systemctl commands are all stand-alone commands that you can't chain into each other.
Nice video 👍 How about a pinned comment re: 3:26 correction (RefuseManualStop=yes in the auditd.service file in RH Linux but not necessarily other distros) ?
Yeah, I had forgotten that that was in this video. I'll take care of that when I get the chance.
👍 helpful video other viewer - good comment about RefuseManualStop in auditd.service file.
Thank you... You created this video seven years ago, at that time I was a child.
Thanks!
Oracle Enterprise Linux. 'Nough said...
Isn't the Fedora Linux the FREE version of R.E.L.?
Not exactly. It's sponsored by the Red Hat company, but it's more an experimental distro to evaluate technologies that Red Hat is considering for inclusion into RHEL. I like it for desktop usage, but I wouldn't use it for a critical-mission server.
Recommending a book about Systemd wearing a Slackware t-shirt. LMAO.
Yeah, I like irony.
Hi Donnie. Just discovered your channel and I like your way of explanation. Could you please make a dedicated video about nftables for beginners. I feel there are plenty of videos which do not explain either the concepts behind it or the commands only and I believe one video explaining all this in such a way that beginners can start using nftables right away for simple cases would be good idea.
Hi there! Sorry for the delay in answering. Anyway, now that I've finished writing my shell scripting book, I'll have more time for TH-cam. So, I'll see what I can do about an nftables tutorial. Stay tuned!
I clicked on his series over all the others solely based on the greatest beard on software development history.
Thanks! I started growing it in April 2006, and have become rather attached to it.
Nice series for someone new to Linux. Quick tip to make this easier to look at, install 'htop' and you get a very clear, coloured, interactive menu in the shell where you can easily search/filter all the system processes and see what's going on a lot more easily.
Good tip. I'll add that to my to-do list for making new videos.
Is there a reason why you use that HP model? I’m new to the channel
It's mainly because I got a really good deal on it from eBay. A new model that's speced out like this one would be about $2000. I only have about $700 tied up in this one. Other than that, it's a really good machine, and I'm quite happy with it.
Donnie ! .... what in the name of the creator of Linux have you thought, when you selected your terminal colors? .... Dark pink on pitch black ... not very eye-friendly.
how to know how many spacebar taps are required in text editor to divide columns ? Before explaining complicated matters, pls first address the simple ones, otherwise we all drive an Indy 500 car, yet pushing it without rubber
There's no set number of spaces that you need to place between columns. If you can line things up so that they look good, that's all that matters.
Lol! Started reading your book on safari books and in first chapter there is mention of this channel and i subscribe
Hey, that's very cool. I didn't even realize that my books were on Safari. Anyway, thanks for letting me know, and thanks for the subscription!

what is the link to it so I can report it?
Unfortunately, I don't have the links.
In your vid: All is brown. The car is brown. The book-cover is brown. That's OK. But, SUSE-Green is more beautiful. Green symbolizes sustainability. (Happy with SUSE since 2001.)
openSUSE is good. I'm running it here on one of my workstations.
how to notify using mail with journalctl myservice.service and restart the service any idea?
I bought the e-book version and it is absolutely GREAT. Many thanks.
00:19:00 There is a way, there is a way. Copy and paste works between other apps and Vim. In Vim press i to switch into insert mode and then paste using "Ctrl + Shift + v" shortcut to paste from the clipboard. You just need to add an extra shift key. This is the way we can also Paste in the terminal. So, it is not a Vim specific though.
Yeah, the real difference isn't with vim, but with the different desktop environments. I normally use lxterminal on Fedora with LXDE, and with it I can paste into vim with just the normal right-click menu. But my video creation machine is loaded with Lubuntu, which uses another terminal that doesn't work like that. Unfortunately, I wasn't prepared for that when I made this video.
Does the 1 minute, 5 minute and 15 minute mean the time u have the computer on?
No, that's just a measure of the load averages for the past one minute, five minutes, and 15 minutes. It has nothing to do with how long the computer has been running.
