A simple weaving technique to make hats, mats, and even sails for short voyage canoes. Today, a popular weave that shows your colors for sporting events, graduation, and more. Also, switch the material to leather and you could make belts, hat trims, bag straps, book marks,and even luggage pulls. The possibilities are endless.

great instructions presented. in a calm tone. I watched other videos regarding this lei and was still not grasping and understanding how it works. Thank you for clearing it up for me. (about the center and how it stays together.,). Wished I had taken same lei making classes when I was living there with my Hilo husband.

Kaulana taught me how to make a 2 ribbon lei on the Pride of America. Followed this tutorial and was able to make a 4 ribbon lei easily. Thank you for the great tutorial!

What is the Hawaiian name for these type of leis? When I was on the cruise last week, we made them with 2 ribbons. I have made one of those and am now working on my 4 ribbon lei. I thought you gave the lei a specific name.

Kaulana you need a facebook page. Wish I could post a picture because after you inspired me on the Pride of America last week, I made a beautiful 4 strand lei for my daughter ( in her school colors.) that graduates college this weekend.
How many inches long will the finished lei be?
Depends on you. Should measure over your head and just below your chest.
I just got my four ribbons, but didn't notice until I opened them that the dot pattern they have is only on one side. Now, I'm wondering which side the pattern should be on, if it matters. I'm thinking on the outer side of the loop.
I have the same problem, with a one-sided pattern.
With a one sided pattern, you will need to have the pattern facing up. The blank side should be underneath.
I've read different lengths for ribbon (6 yds, 10 yds, and now 7 yds). Which is the best length to produce a graduation lei for a man?
When we make our 4 ribbon lei, we usually use 7 yds. Better to have a little bit more than not enough.
Easy to follow tutorial - I was finally able to do a 4 strand lei- do you have a tutorial video for a 6 strand / triple braid Lei?

Aloha, China We met on the POA back in July and I've made 6 of the 4 ribbon leis since being back in New Zealand. Have you ever made a 6 ribbon lei? Please advise. Mahalo.
Hi Craig! I am clearly not China, but I have made one with eight ribbons. My ambassador was Kaulana, and he was very helpful. Essentially, adding on another pair of ribbons is just like a four ribbon. Let’s call them pairs A, B, and C. A and B would be the four ribbon video above. You start the same way, with wrapping the match for the loop for pair B underneath the ribbon for pair A. Then you add in pair C- but you treat B and C like they are the pairs in a four ribbon lei. So you wrap the match for loop C underneath the ribbon for loop B only, not all of the ribbons. I hope this makes sense! Good luck!

Very simple tutorial. Great job Kaulana and China. I learned lei making with China at Norwegian Cruise Line Pride of America.
Kaulana & China are two of the most beautiful, talented and patient teachers of the art of Lei making. I have been able to make many leis thanks to their classes on the Pride Of America. I love and miss them both.

Mahalo nui loa for sharing, very much appreciate the video and attention to detail, best video I had seen with the instructions are spoken clearly. I had done a ribbon lei for my roommate for her baby shower I have to leave it open but I never knew what to do towards the end of the ribbon lei.

Hi! This is the best video making a ribbion lei. It's best because Kaulani speaks clearly, slowly so one can follow, seriously!! Many talk to soft, fingers covered while making lei, they don't speak clearly so one can follow along! Great video. You two look great, remember you on the Pride of America~!!! Aloha, Lori

Thank you for this tutorial. Directions and demonstration was easy to follow. Other videos, either they talk too much or their hands get in the way which makes it difficult to follow.

There are a number of instructions for making this lei on TH-cam. Yours is the most clear and detailed. Very helpful, especially for my first attempt. Mahalo nui loa.
