I was in Beijing in 1981, as part of the first Delegation of British Youth. The Chinese govt paid for EVERYTHING! Flights, hotels, food ... they took us to 7 different cities inc Shanghai, Canton; Great Wall, Ming Tombs, Gweilin & Li River and more! We had afternoon tea in the Great Hall of the People on Tienanmin Square with Vice Premier Wang Zhen -- veteran of The Long March!!! There were NO cars in Beijing - except for our Minibus and half a dozen Govt vehicles. The ordinary people had never seen young westerners! (The 16 of us were 18--26) We included blond(e)s, gingers, curly hair, wavy hair, blue eyes. Literally HUNDREDS of people followed us down the street, smiling, laughing, being friendly. Several people spoke some English and came up to talk. They were wonderful! We saw the FIRST Ad billboard (for a lady's pink jumper) being HAND PAINTED!) A crowd of hundreds watched. NO ONE wore Western clothes, everyone wore the "Mao Uniform"! EXCEPT ... toddlers had brightly coloured outfits! When we got back we told EVERYONE, "Get ready, China is about to TAKE OFF! Soon they will dominate the entire world of production!!!" Of course, no one would take us seriously! Today it would be like predicting North Korea to become world's largest economy!
