McGovern Centennial Gardens always seems to look best after the rain. Here's a Hermann Park Moment with the Pink Siam Tulip Gingers, or curcuma alismatifolia 'pink', flowers along the pergola walk. The leaves, flowers, and stems of Pink Siam Tulip Ginger resemble that of tulips; hence the perennials' common name. This heat-loving plant produces beautiful clusters of petal-like, pink bracts that...

Keith grew up in neighboring Third Ward. He grew up in a time when segregation was still prevalent, and Hermann Park gave him a ...

Hermann Park Moments - Brays Bayou Wildflowers
I remember when these trains had loud engines, which only added to the experience as a kid
No audio on my phone! 🙁
Why no whistle?
Whatever happened to the mountain motif decoration at the entrance of the tunnel? The Hermann Park train ride is not complete without passing through the tunnel! I remember it used to scare the hell out of me as a child as soon as I saw the dark entryway of the tunnel....ha!
One of my favorite Zoo train rides!!!!
Will, What a wonderful Jo! Thankyou, Evan
Kieth Wade was one of Houston's finest unsung heroes. He made things happen and never took the credit. It was a privilege to know him and to work with him We will miss him so.
Oh how nice
Cool
Video suggestion, or reply if possible. Would love to know more about performing maintenance on my Texas Mountain Laurels. I like the look of these trees/shrubs, and the fragrance of the blooms. I have three. Two grow freely, but one has to be trimmed and shaped because it's about 3' from a sidewalk. I also want to take off some of the ht. How and when should I trim? Thanks!
Doug Miller glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the question. Texas mountain laurels are wonderful plants and their fragrance, when blooming, is hard to beat. Usually these don’t require much pruning but it sounds like you have two situations where it’s indicated-controlling height and proximity to a walkway. There are two options during the year to prune: winter when the tree is dormant or immediately after it blooms (which is likely about now). Do keep in mind that they bloom on old growth, so pruning in the dormant period might result in you not having blooms for a year. Slow growers, careful consideration is advised when deciding if and how to prune. Too, due to their slow growth it might require a multi-year pruning plan to achieve your optimal look. Trimming the top will create a bushier plant and encourage lateral growth, but trying to limit the natural height too much might adversely affect blooming. All pruning cuts should be made with clean, sharp cutters on a 45-degree angle around 1/4 inch above an existing node (or joint where leaves and branches form). The general rule of trimming no more than 1/3 of the plant should be adhered to. Don’t feel like you have to rush the process either. Sometimes it’s best to step away for a bit and come back with fresh eyes to keep from over-trimming. Remember, you can always take more off with additional cuts but emergency super-glue surgeries to reattach the severed limbs of an overzealous pruning session don’t ever end well. Good luck and let me know if there’s something I forgot to answer.
@@williamtisbell this is VERY helpful. Thank you!
Great video, Will! Very informative. I have been doing it wrong all these years. Have been mixing in lots of fertilizer with the soil when planting. Makes so much sense to let the tree get used to the actual soil before fertilizing. I also never make the outer dam. I will from now on. Thank you for the information!
