As a newer turner appreciate your educational videos. For a mid lathe turner interested in turning boxes, small vases etc. is a complete hollowing system needed? I have one Hunter tool and it is a solid carbide cutter, looking at their various hollowing tools appreciate your suggestions. Thank you.
Do you know if this process would also work for HSS rods?
Thanks,I just purchased the #3 for making my bowling ball bowls. The stuff inside can be tough. Hope the cutters hold up.
It looks like they don't have the #4 anymore. I just ordered the #3 Badger instead. You should get a commission from them.

Works fantastic. I hollow my end grain boxes using this tool and then clean up the final cuts with the Hunter Badger.

Very good. I just recently purchased this tool and have turned a bowl with it. It is fantastic and rivals my Ellsworth/Irish Grind tool that I normally use.
what size viceroy are you using in this video?
Great explanation on how this tool does this particular cut easier than a bowl gouge or conventional scrapers. Very effective training aids.

It is Walnut. This was a blank that was given to me. I would cut it differently normally.
John, The Viceroy looks very similar to the Clewe's mate 2, any difference?
there is a difference. Mike originally made the Mate tools for Jimmy but has stopped. His tool has a square shank where Jimmy's had a rectangular shank. The Viceroy has a slightly different angle and shape to the support shaft around the cutter. I like the Viceroy better for bevel rubbing than the mate tools. I did like the rectangular shaft as I felt it was better for the new turner but it did make it harder to use as a bevel rubbing tool. I think the Viceroy is more versatile than the Mate for this reason.
It's very similar to the Clewes mate tools although Mike added his touch and l think it makes it easier to use as a bevel rubbing tool.
John, with respect, I fail to see the advantage of the Viceroy over a 5/8, or 1/2 bowl gouge. It strikes me that the Viceroy is certainly a slower to use. I will say it seems to be "user friendly" for someone who has no experience.
I don't think it's slower to use. I purposely didn't push it in this video. for experienced turners it does not take the place of the bowl gouge. For new turners however it vastly improves their success rate. I've taught 3 classes now using this tool and the Hunter Hercules. These were brand new turners who had never touched a tool. All were quite successful with the projects and no catches.
If you really push the tool in it will remove wood quite fast. As a long time bowl gouge user I agree with you but it's a fantastic tool for beginners because there is virtually no learning curve and no sharpening tools needed.
John great tutorial thanks - but wonder if you've tried grinding the heel of the bowl gouge bevel, away to allow the tip freedom to follow the deired shape?
