September Sessions -- Redfish -- Flood Tide Fishing -- Charleston SC
Follow Marc as he goes fishing & fly fishing for redfish on a flood tide of the South Carolina Lowcountry with ultra light tackle. He targets these fish by wading through the marsh. As time goes on, the water/tide will rise from ankle deep to knee deep. Much past the knee, and you are flying blind. We are sight fishing here. If it gets too deep, you can't see the fish anymore. Their tails, backs, swirls, splashes, etc are all concealed by the deeper water. They can move undetected. You just have to wait for the water to drop back down, or go find the end of the flat where its not as deep, usually where the water meets land. In terms of hunting these redfish, we wait for them to show us their backs (belly crawling), tails, or noticing any big wakes on the flat. These fish are here for only one purpose: to eat shrimp, crabs, & other baitfish on the flat. The idea, in theory, is to cast in a way that your lure will intercept the fish. BOOM! Fish on!

Skunked in Winter Time -- Throw This!!
มุมมอง 2852 ปีที่แล้ว
A rather warm 70 degree January day produced some tough fishing conditions. Had to move around and fish all the nooks and crannies to find them today. They were sitting underneath a little creek that was still draining from the high tide. After finding them, it took another minute to dial in the bite. Once we timed it right, we ended up with a handful to the boat. Thanks for following along.

    FYI St. John waters are considered part of the national park. It is illegal to fish there or catch lobsters of any size.

    • @redfishbluetail
      @redfishbluetail หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a great point. I can't speak for rod & reel fishing, but I know spearfishing is not allowed. When I lived there years ago, it was 2 per person per day for lobster. The link below from NPS confirms that. Anyone headed down there should take a look at this document from National Park Service, and check with the NPS building in Cruz Bay for any up to date info. www.nps.gov/viis/planyourvisit/upload/NPS-FishingRegs-Handout-10.pdf EDIT: The Coral Reef National Monument has different regs than the National Park. Make sure you know which waters you are diving in. NPS maps will have it marked for you.

    Doing this hike in July. Would it be worth carrying a Tenkara rod for any of the streams or beaver ponds? Did you see any trout?

    • @redfishbluetail
      @redfishbluetail 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Short answer: No Around Blue Lakes Hut is where we saw the most water. I'm usually on the lookout for trout. I can stare at a mountain stream with polarized glasses for hours, but I don't recall seeing any fish. At least I don't remember it. I'm sure there are some there. However, with 6 other people, I never really had the chance to get away and fish. Honestly, I was probably too tired to fish. Day 3 is the day of your biggest climb. You start off hiking on the water and probably follow it for a few miles. I know some pools and pockets should hold fish. Problem is, that day you have an 8 mile hike and a ton of elevation to knock out. Stopping to fish was at the bottom of my list at that moment. If you have time the night you stay at Blue Lakes, or the next morning, you could fish that creek. Its certainly big enough to hold fish. That's a very small window of fishing time, when you are carrying your pole for 5 days. Enjoy the hike. Thanks for watching the video.

    Great video! I just moved to Charleston and am brand new to hitting saltwater on the fly. I tried walking through some marsh to reach a few creeks, but learned very quickly flip flops were not going to work. Got into thigh deep mud and oysters cut up my feed pretty bad. How do you recognize spots that are reachable by foot? Are they only accessible during high tide? I’d love to venture out somewhere as the high tide is coming in so I could follow the fish but don’t want to have another deep mud experience. Any advice?

    • @redfishbluetail
      @redfishbluetail 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching. Flood tide fishing is all about learning from each trip. Sounds like you just learned a valuable lesson. A couple things regarding clothing real quick. I'd get long pants, like Columbia quick dry pants. There are marsh lice, like red bugs, that will burrow into your hair follicles and drive you nuts. The long pants help keep them from getting on your legs. Wear old tennis shoes to start. Or go buy some Simms Zip Up II booties from Haddrells. When looking for wadeable flats, tan sand is a firm bottom. Dark pluff mud is not so firm. You will sink quickly. Shorter green/brown grass = firmer bottom. Tall green grass = pluffier mud. Tall brown grass is usually firm bottom. If you see a flat you want to walk, go walk it at Low Tide. See where the creeks come in. Map yourself on google maps when you are out there. You can navigate a flat pretty easily using satellite view. Most importantly, it will show you where the creek ends, so you can walk around it, rather than through it. Work a flat long enough, you will blindly be able to walk it. Lastly, just go out there and explore, without flip flops. Listen to the sounds. What does a redfish "swirl eat" sound like vs a top water slurp? How does a mullet swirl differ from a redfish V push? How do you keep your heart from pounding out your chest when you see that tail for the first time? It just takes time on the water. Good luck out there.

    • @redfishbluetail
      @redfishbluetail 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I wear Simms Zipit II booties. Worth every cent and will last a couple seasons. The mud can either be stiff as a board or like quicksand. A good rule of thumb is short grass = hard bottom. Tall grass = pluff mud. If you ever get out on a flat, study the grass. Where is it tall? Go towards it. You will start to sink. You will probably find a creek too. You may find "islands" of tall grass in the middle of short grass. Its usually firm there too, but not worth traveling through. Been a minute since I've posted a video and communicated with anyone. Thanks for watching. Hit me up with any more questions. BTW, I walked flats for a long time in tennis shoes. Main thing you want to do is wear long pants. The marsh lice will eat you up. Booties are better than sneakers, because you can keep the snails out with the zipper and velcro straps. Snails find their way in sneakers. Its a bitch. www.simmsfishing.com/products/zipit-bootie-ii?variant=40836284121278&tw_source=google&tw_adid=579783473996&tw_campaign=16090053101&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwte-vBhBFEiwAQSv_xTYlppSIVN_WflODFjQIw30NMd3qw3SNBuBlDw9LrA7r3c70Z2xmCRoCYqAQAvD_BwE

    Any advice for finding hard bottom areas in chs to wade? Anything to look for on map etc?

    • @redfishbluetail
      @redfishbluetail ปีที่แล้ว

      Google satellite can be your best friend. Tan bottom is sand. Sand is hard. Dark bottom is pluff mud. Mud is not firm. You can sink quite easily. However, there is hard pack mud too. I like to look for islands in a marsh too. Islands usually have tan sand around them. They are also good lookout points, as they usually sit a foot or two higher. If I am wading, I usually go stand on one to get out the water for a minute. If you see a flat you think might be good on a flood tide, go walk it when it isn't flooded. Map it out. Go see where the creeks fills the basin. Make mental notes of wear to walk.

      I've never fished that far up. But my dad lives north of there, up in Murrells. They tail up there too. Looks like if you jump in the ICW and head back towards McClellanville, there are a bunch of islands right on the river banks. I'd check around those on a flood tide. I'm not sure what tide level that area floods but use Charleston as a reference. Need a minimum 6.0 to flood Charleston.

      Yep, low tide wading. <-- That's a different ball game than high tide. Flood tide season finished around Thanksgiving. I saw a few reports of people catching fish first week of December, but now its a waiting game. Biggest issue is the fiddler crabs and the bait fish are gone. Reds are not focused on that geography right now. They are schooled up tight on low tide mud flats or small creeks. If you find one redfish, chances are there are 20 fish with it.

    • @redfishbluetail
      @redfishbluetail ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for tuning in. It may be a little too cold for a flood tide, but I have seen a few guys catch some early December this year. I would check those same creeks on dead low tide. Reds tend to school up real tight in the winter. You may come on a school of 100 or more.

      I think it was the cracklin model. I have two colors. Black & Purple, Tan & Orange. Purple always seems to do the trick.

      Thanks Keith. Hope all is well. I wish I was fishing more, but my business took off after Covid. I've had a hard time stepping away from it. Hard to argue the success of a business I've been growing for a decade, but I sure could use a few more Fishing Days. Catch those Stripers up!

    Awesome video! When you were a beginner how did you go about finding spots to use the fly rod? I have a kayak and sup, but can’t seem to find anywhere to practice the fly

    • @redfishbluetail

      I used a rod & reel for years before even taking a fly rod on the flats. I still take a rod & reel with me every trip. Rarely do I go out solo with the fly rod. For one, the terrain may not present a good fly fishing spot. The grass could be too high, or not deep enough yet. A 1/8 oz jig can be more effective in those instances. However, there are a bunch of "open areas" to throw a fly rod on the flat. Most of my casts aren't more than 30ft, so you don't need too much space. Those spaces become more obvious once you realize, more so, where you can't throw it. Process of elimination really.

    Really nerve-wracking when those reds keep turning back and forth..we want to see them tailing but when they are it's so hard to get it in front of them cuz the front is the back when you cast..I feel your pain..

      You are 100% correct. It's just one more skill to learn when you're on the flat. Understanding the fish's movement, or their next move takes time on the water. And patience. Tight lines!

    Very soothing and relaxing to watch your video. I find Washington State one of the most diverse and stunning places on Earth. I was lucky enough to live in Seattle for a year and did some travelling to the Olympic National Park. This brings a lot of amazing memories thanks to you. As someone who has been struggling with a lot of stress, this truly helps to ease the overthinking. Thank you again and wishing you the best :)

    I love your videos! I'm headed to the Charleston area at the end of September for a fly fishing/beach trip. I won't be using any watercraft and will be wade fishing(with Simms boots) the entire time. Could you tell me some of the best locations for wade fishing in this area? I've always had problems finding places without deep mud. THANKS!

    • @redfishbluetail
      @redfishbluetail 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. Where are you staying when you are in Charleston? Most flats have a combination of hard and soft mud. The darker the mud, the softer it gets. Tan sand is usually around islands in the marsh and is generally hard pack. Any mud around the creeks is generally softer. Another good reference is the height of the grass. Taller grass is usually growing in soft muddier spots. Short grass is in harder packed sand/mud.

    After every trip when I water down my reels, I loosen the drags so I remember to set them on the next trip.

      @redfishbluetail 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats smart. I think I took this reel off another rod I hadn't used in a while. Swapped it out just before I left the house. I just failed to check it really.

    Awesome glad to see some new content. I haven’t got one on the fly rod this year but it’s coming soon 🤞. I just got a paddleboard recently do you just have a milk carton with rod holders on it? Is it strapped down or anything?

    • @redfishbluetail
      @redfishbluetail 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I just use a milkcrate that is strapped down. I just found about a 1/2in tether. Its real stable. I can have up to 3 rods, water bottle, book bag, etc. Past that, it gets cumbersome. Even 3 rods can be too much.

      Right on, man. Thanks for watching the video. To be fair, I don't think fly fishing has been pursued down here for that long. Maybe two decades for the mass populous, but I'm sure there were some OGs throwing a fly before then.
