1984 Dodge Rampage - Part 5 - Rear Shocks
With the brakes all wrapped up on the Rampage, its time to start on the rear suspension. Time to get the original shocks removed, and some new shocks in place and the car back down on all four tires.
If you are looking for how to replace the rear shocks on a 1984 Dodge Rampage, check my web site out for some close up pictures of the work.

1984 Dodge Rampage - Part 4 - Front Brake Fiasco

After finishing up the rear drum brakes, I decided it was best to just go on and get all the brakes done and complete the fronts. That did not work out very well. Turned into a much larger project that I thought it would. To make things worse, most of the video I recorded got corrupted on the SD card. I’m a bit late to the video, and am just starting to get into engine building. I have experience with assembling semiconductor fabrication tools, but not much with engines. Would testing the shaft rotation after every component installation be a good thing to catch any binding points, or are there any downsides to that method? Thank you and I really enjoyed the video!!

    • @AGeeksGarage
      @AGeeksGarage หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, 100% this. I should have checked the rotation more often than I did (but I was excited to make progress... so didnt). That being said, overly testing can be detrimental (I believe) because you want the engine lube to be in place when you are really starting things up, and over testing can squeeze out some of that lube you put in place. Or at least that is what I have seen in other videos. Glad you enjoyed the videos, I hope to get back to making them again next year.

    I think the problem here was that you were installing the struts on the wrong side. The “L” and “R” designations on the struts indicate left and right as you are sitting in the driver’s seat, not as you are facing the car from the front. If you get them reversed, you will have the problem you encountered. I just installed mine yesterday with no problems.

    Wait.. you’re supposed to bring the engine to operating temp before changing oil? Never did my own oil change but I wouldn’t have guessed that was the proper procedure. Doesn’t it end up cycling throughout the system?

    • @AGeeksGarage
      @AGeeksGarage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So the oil has already been cycling through your engine, up to this point so you arent doing any additional harm/damage to the engine. By getting the oil up to temp, it flows better, so it is easier to extract from the engine. Thanks for asking.

    If you go 7nder the car for the filter, then just do oil drain plug style to check for metal and clean off the oil plug magnet. Extractor is better for a mid 20,000 mile or 2 year diesel oil change at the one year or 10k marker. But only if the oil filter sits on top of engine like a canister filter. This gives the long life oil a new filter to keep going strong since the new euro oils are such high quality.

    Great video. Stealth and 3000GT are identical. I work on them and own 2. History (1980s-90s): Dodge partnered with Mitsu due to Chrysler's business objective. GM partnered with Toyota and Ford partnered with Mazda. To make the long story short, Mitsu had the quality and technology so Chrysler had Mitsu design and produce everything, except for the Stealth's exterior design. Dodge did a slight modification of exterior but dimensions were same. Everything else was produced by Mitsu and stamped with Mitsu's 3 diamond logo. Dodge stamped Chrysler logo on exterior sides only. Ultimately, freed up Dodge in 1992 so that they could focus on their ultimate super car...Viper. Reduced some of the high tech items from Mitsu by simplifying and focusing on brute power and cornering...thus, the Viper came to dominate against all high performance cars...

But the sense of accomplishment you get from doing it yourself is unbelievable. If I was buying the engine stand again today, I would spend the extra $100 for the one with the built in rotisserie. Hey so sweet Stealth! Not that I know it all but your cv boots were already torn before you noticed. Especially the pass. side one; the joint looked very dry. Oil-based grease inherantly destroys rubber and the only fix is to replace the leaker. @A Geeks Garage, I know it’s been a long time since you’ve finished the Stealth. But do you remember having trouble removing the CV Axles from the transmission? Were they easy to remove or did you have to use any special techniques to get them off in one piece? I did watch your other video on getting them off but in that video they were already out of the transmission just dangling. I watched the other engine removal video to see if there was any explanation there, but there wasn’t any. If you could please help that would be greatly appreciated. I’m going to try to rebuild my transmission this spring when I get the car back from out of storage and I want to make sure I don’t fall into any pitfalls that I know I can avoid. Also, I don’t know if you remember me commenting on one of your videos from earlier this year about the Stealth being finished. But I finally did get my Stealth and I am in love with that car. It’s the most fun I’ve had with a car ever. It just needs some loose ends tied up and it’ll be in great shape! Thanks in advance for your help. (I’ve researched that there are circlips that hold the cv axles to the transmission. That’s my main concern with removing the axles. How to get those clips off so I can simply pull the axle out of the transmission.)

    • @AGeeksGarage
      @AGeeksGarage ปีที่แล้ว

      @kiweeltyler3586 yeah, removing the CV axels from the transmission was a pain! I ended up using a pry bar that I had in the basement (one for wood working... not the best tool but it did work). This guy here: th-cam.com/video/nVxDgcTJOHE/w-d-xo.html used a similar method to what I did. I think maybe I would try using a tie-rod separator if I had to do it again (although I am not sure that this is the best tool for the job either ... ) Good luck on your project. I followed your advice and we were able to install these struts. However, it seems that the blister on the left side doesn’t fit properly anymore. Actually there is an opening between the blister and the hood. Could that be because of the increased tension the not exactly made to measure struts are putting on the hood? Have you observes this as well?
