Beethoven around the world: step #4 - Brazil
With an endless modernity, the 16 quartets by Beethoven totally escape from the austere and elite’s image of classical music. For the eye, it is a treasure map; for the ears, an odyssey. For the mind, it is both a powerful stimulus and a call for fraternity.
2019 - 2020: Quatuor Ébène will celebrate Beethoven’s 250th Birthday by performing all
his string quartets around the world.
All along this odyssey, the Quatuor Ébène will record a 7 CD box for Erato Warner.
Their adventure will be followed in a documentary film, showing their encounters with all kind
of audiences during this journey.
Highly receptive to Beethoven’s message, they begin a trip both musical and humanist under the theme of the environmental responsibility.
2020 will also be the 20th anniversary of Quatuor Ébène.

Gobsmacked; my jaw's on the floor. I've been playing cello for 50 years - and I'll continue to do so as long as I can - but I'll never be able to play with this level of quicksilver precision and control. I've heard lots of complete Beethoven quartet cycles, but the Ebene's recording immediately shot to the top of my list as soon as I heard it (replacing the Tokyo's recordings from the 90s).

just noticed that Marie Chilemme plays the first note of the final movement a fifth higher than it's printed, then immediately reverts to pitch. has anyone else heard this done before by other quartets?

I do like the camera setting to cover all 4 persons and 4 instruments equally. It enhances the musical effect of Quartet mood and harmony all together.
FIRE! It’s not noted in the score but I think 4:32 should be even faster, like the music suddenly is jet-powered
I mean, you can certainly choose to do that, but Beethoven was perfectly capable of writing that in if he'd wanted it. And, of course, the Ebene's already playing faster than humans are capable of.
La joven que toca la viola tiene tanto carácter y atractivo que se convierte en el alma del cuarteto. Todos la atención se centra en ella durante la ejecución, a pesar de ser el instrumento de cuerdas, entre los cuatro si incluimos el contrabajo, que menos interés despierta en los amantes de la música clásica.
WOW, I could not take my eyes off the violist! The way she captivated me with how deeply into the music she was, how she connected with her colleagues, and never getting covered up by the other instruments! Brava!!!
