That engine gondola would be one of the worst places to work in. Just imagine going down that ladder 1000ft above the ground, flying at 50 kts and getting propeller wash right into the face. As if they couldn't place engineer inside the zeppelin with all the gauges, levers and switches being remote operated from inside. They already had autopilot (or rather the simple gyropilot) to hold the bearing, and the sono altimeter, but the safety and engineer comfort wasn't yet invented I guess.
