How To get More Food From A Small Garden
Help feed your family by growing some of your own food, even if your yard is small. A small vegetable garden can be a great vegetable garden-if it’s planted strategically. And a small garden is actually less work and needs less water too.
How small are we talking? Imagine the space underneath a parked car. Add another 4 feet on each end and that gives you a space about 8 X 24 feet. You will be amazed at how much food you can grow in that limited space and be eating that food for 9 -10 months out of the year, and longer if you grow certain vegetables. Even 8 x 16 feet will yield a surprising amount of food.
But you need a plan. You can’t just randomly sow seeds in the ground or just follow seed packet instructions and expect to get really great results. Without a plan, you usually end up wasting space instead of maximizing space, and maximizing space is the key to bigger yields.
So how do you maximize growing space? 1. By limiting the walking around space in the vegetable bed; 2. by planting and sowing densely; 3. by growing plants vertically; 4. by successive planting and extending the growing season with strategies to cool plants in the summer and warm plants in the winter, including putting together a simple portable greenhouse.
Where can you find such a comprehensive gardening system? My book-More Food from Small Spaces, explains and illustrates all these strategies with clear and simple instructions- including how to build two different kinds of inexpensive portable greenhouses. Here’s how "Foreword Reviews", a book trade review journal described the book "Gardeners who believe they don't need another book on the horticulture shelf may want to reconsider, as Park's high-yield techniques are worth far more than the purchase price of her book." - Nancy Walker, ForeWord Reviews
And it only costs $8.99 in pdf format.

Gazpacho From Fresh Tomatoes

Gazpacho Soup from fresh tomatoes is a late summer treat I look forward to every year as soon as I spy my tomato crop showing hints of red. This cold Spanish soup recipe is an authentic gazpacho. And it’s a chunky gazpacho with bits of tomato, cucumber, bell pepper and herbs in a brilliantly juicy tomato base. No canned tomato juice, no canned tomatoes either, this easy gazpacho recipe uses rip...
How To Make Baguettes At Home

The baguettes are very simple with few ingredients. I like to make them with only a little bit of yeast so they take a little long to proof, but have a wonderful flavor. I also have my own unique way of shaping and baking them without a special baguette pan. If you want to try making them, you’ll need a cookie sheet and three oblong boxes like the kind that foil and wraps come in and also a pie...
How To Make A Classic Country Boule
มุมมอง 2005 ปีที่แล้ว
This recipe for a country white boule is very light and crusty. Making it is a little more complicated than my earlier white boule recipe, but results in a better, higher rising loaf because of the two sessions of stretching and folding I added to the proofing stage. Stretching and folding stacks the dough higher and the resultant bread rises higher too. It requires a little more attention than...

Cool Tomato Plants in Hot Weather with Self-Wicking Pots of Water

    I think this is the best, most versatile way of making a shade framework out of all the videos I've seen on TH-cam. But, my question is this: do you glue the pipes in place or just assemble them without gluing?

      I haven't found it necessary to use glue for my garden projects made from PVC pipes. I prefer to take the structures apart for storage over the winter. Thanks for your comment.

    Hey there! Looking great. I'm a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in West Africa as an Agriculture volunteer. Our Hot season is coming up! I'm looking at developing a shade structure, and cost is a huge factor with the people I work with. I'm thinking about doing a shade structure with old mosquito nets -- any thoughts? A lot of shade structures I've seen use fancy materials which aren't even close to available here. But I'm thinking that the mosquito net would give enough dappled shade. Thanks for any insights!

    • @margaretpark1433
      @margaretpark1433 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure that mosquito netting will create enough shade. Try doubling or tripling the layers. Old lace curtains or tablecloths do work well, if you can find any of these.

    would you put the shade cloth over zucchini/squash too?

    • @margaretpark1433
      @margaretpark1433 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the ideal growing temperatures for squashes is between 70 and 95 degrees F. I f you get many weeks of temperatures near or over 100 degrees, it would probably be a good idea to cover them. But if it's only three weeks or so , they're probably OK without the shade cloth.

    I have some questions, so can you grow plant (vegetable) in Vancouver BC Canada in winter? and also how can these plants SURVIVE the cold, seens most of them are summer plants? sorry stupid question. I'm new to planting

    • @margaretpark1433
      @margaretpark1433 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dan Serevi I think in Vancouver you can probably grow plants in a greenhouse in winter -- but they would have to be plants that can withstand a little frost, The plants in this video are a good sample to choose from. You can plant seeds in January in the greenhouse and the seeds will sprout when the soil temperature is right for them. This way you're getting the earliest start.

    hi, I have a small one rack greenhouse but it gets to hot, like 50c hot. do you use your in summer and at what temp do you grow in it. I know that the prose is to raise the co2 and heat for winter.
