The 6502 Show
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 มิ.ย. 2023
Emphasis is on 6502 single-board computers of the 1970s and 1980s, including the KIM-1, SYM-1, AIM-65, and computers from OSI, Commodore, Atari, Apple, and BBC. Both hardware and software are discussed. Also, occasional info about other 8-bit machines, or anything else I might come up with.
BORG ATTACK! for VIC-20 - a "type-in" style game
A play-through and examination of a new "type-in" style game for VIC-20: Borg Attack! Save the peaceful, but very important, Chandrans from assimilation by an oncoming Borg cube by piloting a souped-up shuttlepod with secret stealth technology and weapons. I wrote the game almost entirely in BASIC in the spirit of the type-in programs in home computer magazines of the eary/mid '80s. Plus, there's an adaptation of Lil' Zilch with color, animation, and sound, originally written for the text-only PAL-1 (KIM-1 replica) 6502 SBC in TinyBASIC.

OREGON TRAIL: Going under the hood with the 1977 mainframe version
มุมมอง 2.5K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
A review of the 1977 mainframe version of Oregon Trail. The program is, arguably, the greatest title of educational software. We'll take a look at the origin, source code, and play of the version that ran on a CDC Cyber 70, plus go over some of the tweaks I had to make for my homemade clock- and timer-less 6802 computer. My computer uses the second BASIC devised by Microsoft (for MITS), so any ...
PL/M: The FIRST high-level language specifically for microprocessors
มุมมอง 14K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
First off, sorry about the mike popping...it's never done that before. Anyway, SPL/M is a "small" subset of PL/M, the very first high-level language written specifically for an 8-bit microprocessor (in that case, the Intel 8008) by Dr. Gary Kildall: author of CP/M (written in PL/M!), founder of Digital Research, Inc., educator, TV host, and bon vivant. In 1977, Tom Crosley created a subset of P...
FLEX operating system running off a Compact Flash card on a 6802 computer
มุมมอง 1.2K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
FLEX 3 (an 'update' to FLEX 2) is up and running on my homemade 6802 computer. FLEX was (and is!) a floppy disk operating system for 6800 and 6809 computers, and with some adaptation, it can be made to work with modern hobby machines interfaced to Compact Flash cards substituting for the floppy drives. This is video is about one way to get FLEX running on your machine, and a quick view of the s...
A stack of baseball games for small, classic SBCs and hobby computers - 6502, 6809, Z80, etc.
มุมมอง 1577 หลายเดือนก่อน
I review eight early baseball games for small single-board and hobby computers (6502, 6809, z80, etc.), mostly from the 1970s. Several of the games can be made to run in as little as 4 KB, and all are under 14 KB. Also, special guest host @masterhit1 gives Bob Leedom's 1979 BASEBALL game - with LEDs and game controllers - a play test. Reviewed are: BASBAL by John Kemeny, 1964 (yes, *that* John ...
Tiny PILOT - a high-level language for 6800 and 6502 in only 1.6K
มุมมอง 2.5K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
An overview of a "tiny" version of PILOT, ported to the 6800 from the Nick Vrtis 6502 original. Tiny PILOT is only 1.6 KB, but has all of the core features needed for most retro programming tasks. It's super kid-friendly, and even six-year-olds can create fun programs (they won't even know they're learning!). For the kid-at-heart (like me), Tiny PILOT provides both challenge and enjoyment while...
Rescued BASIC (mostly) games from the Age of FLEX
มุมมอง 4778 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video reviews six games from the 1970s, four of which were found in an archived collection of FLEX disks. FLEX and OS-9 were the operating systems of choice in the late '70s and into the '80s for 6800 and 6809 users. The BASIC games are: Whist, Swarms, Hate, World War, Rocket Launcher, and Mini-Trek (VTL-2). RESOURCES Daniel Tufvessen's FLEX extraction and conversion tools: www.waveguide.s...
A Compact Flash (CF) card drive/file system for the HM-68 computer, or ANY 6502, 6809, etc.
มุมมอง 2.2K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
Build a Compact Flash card solid state drive for many popular 8-bit-based machines, such as those using any of the Motorola 68xx family, or the MOS 6502 family. In this video, a 64 MB Type I card is used, but anything up to 1 GB should work fine - larger cards were not tested. A *very* simple file system, written in 6800 assembly and interfaced with SWTBUG for the HM-68 computer, is included. T...
Building a 6802 computer from scratch
มุมมอง 2.5Kปีที่แล้ว
Build the "Hassler's Monster-6802" homebrew computer with a chip from the very dawn of the personal computer age. This video gives an overview of the machine's conception, construction, and use. Also, a brief progress report on the FOCAL-65 source code reconstruction project is given. The Motorola 6800 was a very important microprocessor in the 1970s (especially in the auto industry), and it fe...
FOCAL-65 documents found: a full user guide and (coming soon!) source to the 1977 6502 language.

The source code and full documentation for FOCAL-65 (the 6502 version) has surfaced! In this video, I recount how it all happened, what shape the documents are in, and next steps to getting machine-readable documents ready. FOR MODS: Label FPOPJ is at location $2E14 in the FOCAL-65 version I have on my website. All added functions must end with a branch to that, not an RTS. Full source to come ...
THE VALLEY - an influential early '80s RPG for the PET from the UK's 'computing today' magazine
มุมมอง 658ปีที่แล้ว
The Valley, an early RPG, took the UK computing community by storm in 1982, with many hundreds of readers typing in the program from 'computing today' magazine, learning the mechanics of program development along the way. The game took on a life of its own, as users augmented and modified the program. I typed in the PET version from the magazine, as I could not find a copy for the PET anywhere ...
FOCAL-65: A deeper dive into a not-quite-forgotten 6502 high-level language
มุมมอง 4.1Kปีที่แล้ว
SOURCE CODE AND USER MANUAL F O U N D !! You can safely ignore the appeal. Thanks to everyone who helped track these items down, especially to Nigel W, "Mr. B", and FOCAL-65's principal author, Wayne Wall. In the late 1960s and through the mid-70s FOCAL was a "conversational" alternative to BASIC for high-level language programming on the DEC PDP-8 and on many Digital timesharing systems. In 19...

Six classic games from The First Book of KIM are reviewed: Asteroid, Craps, Farmer Brown, KIM-Tac-Toe, Multi-Maze, and Ping Pong. These programs were penned by some early "giants" - Stan Ockers, Lew Edwards, and Jim Butterfield. BLINK BEEP READ - Plenty to do with a single line off a PIA port. 6502, KIM-1, 6532, 6522, 6821
มุมมอง 329ปีที่แล้ว
There's still plenty of fun to be had and projects to make if you only have one RIOT or PIA chip on your single-board computer. Very often, PB7 is available to use (and sometimes PB0, too) while the rest of the port is reading your keypad or toggling LEDs on your 7-segment display. And hey - I didn't know a lot about this I/O stuff until I recently started with small experiments like these, so ...
