Rifle Maintenance For Beginners! Episode 1
Whether shooting custom or factory rifles, this class is designed for both the new and experienced shooters alike. Many times, we have students here at the school that have never fired a rifle beyond a 100 yards and some who haven't even fired a rifle at all. I want to share with you our approach and concept of really trying to help all, including those that need it the most, at the most basic introductory level. Our goal is to help you better understand your rifle, how it works, how to clean it, maintain it and even build it. We are looking forward to having you attend and don't forget to register for The Wolf Pack to see all of the future episodes.

If you get rust stains on the stainless steel barrels you can use a product called citrisurf 77 plus. You can get it in a spray bottle. Works great. I’ve used it on piping and tanks after someone used a carbon steel brush. Using stainless wool or brushes avoids the potential issue.

With the shooter not noticing a proper cartridge discharge, wouldn't the first question be, is it a hang fire? Firearm pointed in safe direction and wait for 30 secs. Then extract cartridge and inspect for bullets presence and primer strike. The squib load is serious business. I'll bookmark this vid for a tutorial.

In "Any Shoot Will Do, The A-Square Handloading and Rifle Manual", on page 16, states: ... ... ... one primer went off, initiating a chain reaction that filled the air with shrapnel and cost him both his eyes." Another fellow on TH-cam told a story of hand priming in his lazyboy chair when one went off. They found the lid to the primer tray stuck in the ceiling above the chair. According to the story it had just missed his face. So be extra sure not to have it aimed at your face when hand priming with these tools. And safety glasses would be a good idea too. Lee in the instructions to their hand priming tool Warns against using certain brand primers in their tool as they are known to detonate and cause a chain reaction. So if one uses a hand priming tool, especially with certain primers, they should wear safety glasses as mentioned in a plethora of reloading manuals.

Powder comes from the factory with 40-50% humidity in single base, and 50-60% humidity in the double base powders. When the reloading manuals give a powder charge weight it is with the moisture include in the weight ( see: Midway USA LoadMap reloading manual a top of page 5). So it is with the factory ammo as well. If one dries the powder out, the rounds will be hotter than originally planned, due to the volume of powder and faster burning when lacking the moisture content.. In maximum loads it can become dangerous. And yes moisture can seep into a loaded round, as well as back out again depending on the humidity level out side the cartridge if given 24 hours according to the Midway USA LoadMap reloading manual on page 8 under Humidity, unless one seals the round with sealant. Hence it is best to store ammo, powder, and primers in a controlled environment of say 49-58% humidity. This can be done within the sealed ammo cans by putting a Boveda 49% or 58% Two-Way Humidity Control Pack. Or one could store them in a Cigar Humidor cabinet that is both Humidity and temperature controlled. I personally stored my ammo in IP-65 rated boxes with silica packs in them, with Bluetooth temp and humidity monitors to boot. Within days the humidity levels were around 28%. Not good if left that way for extended amounts of time. I have since taken the packs out and replaced them with the two way humidity control packs. Now things are as should be. Anyway, vacuum sealing with desiccant pack will not only suck the air out of the cartridge, but will absorb the moisture from it as well whereby drying the powder out, making for a hotter burning load. Not good. 1) chronoplotter.com/2021/08/19/how-does-humidity-affect-powder/ 2) bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2008/09/tech-tip-humidity-can-change-powder-burn-rates/ 3) th-cam.com/video/pzDHRwi3QVk/w-d-xo.html

I only load straight walled cartridges, but I load them as if I where going to nationals shooting 1,000 yards. Of coarse all my targets are within 100 yards and in, but I still take the time to make match grade ammunition. My favorite is the 45 Colt. Second is 460 S&W Magnum. Third is the 45 Auto. And the fourth is 455 Webley. And last but not least is a wildcat cartridge I am developing. I start out with new brass, and trim each one. I then lube, size and then flare all of them before running them in a dry tumbler to clean all lube off of them. I then prime and charger them. I weigh each charge on a beam scale and trickle the load to a T. And then seat the bullets with a Redding Competition micrometer seating die. And finally I crimp the case mouths. As far as reloading them I deprime, then wet tumble, then dry thoroughly. And from there I start the above process beginning to end. I never get in a hurry. I do not care how long it takes me, but rather only care how well of a job I do. I shoot to reload, as opposed to reloading to shoot.
