Pho Pho-nomenal "A Step by Step Guide to Making Traditional Pho Noodle Soup"
"Welcome to my kitchen, folks! Today, we're going to be cooking up a storm and a bowl of Pho noodle soup, the ultimate comfort food. And I've got a secret tip to take this dish to the next level. You might want to take notes, because this recipe is a real Pho-nomenon."
"First things first, let's talk about the ingredients. For this recipe, you'll need beef bones, onions, ginger, and a mix of spices that are like a symphony for your taste buds, including cinnamon, star anise, and cloves. And don't forget the rice noodles and herbs like cilantro and basil, they're like the cherry on top of this Pho-licious sundae."
Pho Recipe (Serves 6)
Ingredients:
• 2 lbs beef bones (neck bones, oxtails, or marrow bones)
• 1 large onion, peeled and halved
• 4-inch piece of ginger, peeled and halved
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• 4 star anise
• 2 cloves
• 2 tsp coriander seeds
• 1 tsp fennel seeds
• 2 tbsp fish sauce
• 1 tbsp salt
• 8 cups of water
• 1 lb of beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced
• 1 package of rice noodles
• 2 cups of bean sprouts
• 1 cup of cilantro
• 1 cup of Thai basil
• 1 cup of mint
• 1 cup of chopped scallions
• 1 lime, cut into wedges
• 1 jalapeno, thinly sliced
• Hoisin sauce, sriracha sauce, and hoisin sauce for garnish
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 425F.
2. Wash and rinse the beef bones, then pat dry. Place the bones on a baking sheet and roast them for 30-40 minutes or until browned.
3. While the bones are roasting, add the onion and ginger to the baking sheet and roast for 15-20 minutes or until they are also browned.
4. In a pan, toast the cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, coriander seeds, and fennel seeds until fragrant.
5. In a large pot, add the roasted bones, onion, ginger, and toasted spices. Pour in 8 cups of water, fish sauce, and salt. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 2-3 hours.
6. While the broth is simmering, prepare the rice noodles as per package instructions and set aside.
7. Once the broth is done simmering, use a fine mesh strainer to strain the broth. Discard the solids.
8. To assemble the pho, place a handful of rice noodles in each bowl. Top with the sliced beef and bean sprouts.
9. Ladle the hot broth over the noodles and meat.
10. Garnish with cilantro, Thai basil, mint, scallions, lime wedges, and jalapeno.
11. Serve with hoisin sauce, sriracha sauce, and hoisin sauce on the side.
"Now, for my secret tip to make the most delicious broth: Roasting the bones. This is what gives the broth that deep, rich flavor. You can also roast the onions and ginger to add even more depth of flavor. Roasting these ingredients is like hitting a Pho-grand Slam in the kitchen!"
"Now, you're probably wondering, why wash the bones? Well, you want a clear broth, not a cloudy one. So, it's important to rinse the bones before adding them to the pot to remove any impurities. Trust me, you don't want your Pho to look like a cloudy day in the kitchen."
"After several hours of simmering, it's time to add the noodles. And don't forget the herbs, they add a freshness and aroma that really makes the Pho special. It's like adding the finishing touch to a masterpiece."
"And there you have it, the ultimate comfort food, Pho noodle soup. And don't forget, you can always adjust the recipe to your taste. You can add more or less spices, or even add your own twist to it. Pho is like a blank canvas, waiting for you to create your own culinary masterpiece."
"And there's a fun fact, Pho actually originated in Vietnam as street food, and it became popular in the West in the 20th century. And now, it's enjoyed all over the world. Pho has truly become a global Pho-nomenon."
"Bon appétit!"
tip and trick : "And now, let's talk about a few tips and tricks to make your Pho experience even better. First of all, if you're looking for a lighter broth, you can always use chicken or vegetable broth instead of beef broth. And if you want to make your Pho even more flavorful, try adding a splash of fish sauce or soy sauce.
Another tip is to have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go before you start cooking. This will make the cooking process go much smoother and you'll have more time to enjoy your Pho.
And finally, don't be afraid to play with the ingredients and make it your own. Try different spices, add different herbs, or even try different types of noodles. The sky's the limit when it comes to Pho, so have fun and be creative!"
