    Thank you for posting this, Ben. I had not seen this before. When was this filmed? Nona Beamer died in 2008. It was so nice to see and hear her again. Miss my homeland, which does not feel like this anymore except on the the Big Island and maybe Kauai.

      Thanks for commenting--I filmed this in November 2000. Meeting and interviewing Nona Beamer was a special experience I'll never forget.

    What a lovely documentary; wonderfully educational, touching, scratching the surface of the depth of the beautiful culture of Hawaii, and all its aloha and glory. Thank you very much for uploading it.

    Acts 17:29 "Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:"

    Gorgeous! Thank you! From what little i understand, there was also an erotic, sexually suggestive hula that apparently was eradicated by the missionaries. I wonder what that was like. I guess it is lost forever, idk. Beautiful documentary. Mahalo.

    Thank you for sharing this! I wonder if there is a chance of getting this video captioned for accessibility? I would love to share it with my dance history class, but can't use it if it's not accurately captioned.

      Glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately there is no captioned version or simple way to get it done at this point. Hope you can still find it of use.

    hawaii is beautiful island like philippines. i wish america had preserved their culture, language, and people. i regret that their culture and kanguage are dying. i cant even tell who is hawaiin. when i went there, i was looking for hawaiin people.

      Hawaiian language and culture is not dying. It is very much alive.

      Unfortunately I'm inclined to agree. The most recent Annual Population Survey (June 2020), as conducted by the Office for National Statistics, suggests that 28.6% of people in Wales aged three and over were able to speak Welsh. Both Hawaiian and English are the official languages of the State of Hawaii, but the Hawaiian language is critically endangered, according to UNESCO.2 Oct 2020. Only 5.7 percent of total speakers on the island can speak Hawaiian. The Welsh Language society managed to get a law passed that every single public sign must be bi lingual. So when you are in Wales you constantly see signs, half of which you don't understand but it reminds you that you are in Wales and there is a rich Welsh culture. If both Hawaiian and English are official languages in Hawaii how come public literature is not bi lingual?

    What does it mean when the dancers respond to the chanter (?) And is there meaning behind what the dancers wear? Sometimes grass skirts, sometimes fabric skirts?

    • @NoBodyKnows514
      @NoBodyKnows514 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question...

    • @hilife8225
      @hilife8225 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dancers are calling out rather than responding. The calling out is a “kahea” it’s a cue/announcement for the chanter, dancers and the observers. There is significant meaning for the attire of the performers, both chanter and dancers. The nuances and meanings cannot be detailed here. Hula is spiritual as well as entertaining so the choices for adornments and costumes can be personal choices as well as culturally driven.

    The main effect of the hula dance that it is not almost dance it's a language of the body . It's like a diolog with people full of native expression and energy .

    May 15, 2019- I love Hawaii and its traditional people.. They are nice and calm and friendly... I love and go back visit Hawaii but Hawaii is freaking expensive... It's all United States fault for claiming it.. Hawaii was very power island way way way back then if it wasn't for U.S.. If Hawaii was a country of their own like the rest of Samoan Islands, Polynesian islands... Hawaii could have been cheap...
