Shane found HK difficult. Would have loved to see him here earlier in his career. It takes a while to break the grip a few popular locals like Whyte had on the better rides.
Gavin adds a lot of colour and fun to the racing game. Congratulations Gav!! You are a good example for young race people. Your banter with Gary Harley increases the tension of the relationship as an example of having " fun " without being a " smart a..e....... Keep up the respectful relationship . Pete
A true legend of the game ! my favorite jockey
Awesome!
Fk John O’Shea for dumping him when taking over Godolphin
He bloody deserves that statue. Legend of the Australian Turf
Corey Brown is a godsend to nsw apprentice jockey education
Brilliant interview, love it Steve
Thank you, really appreciate the feedback.
He won the Cox Plate and three other huge group ones on the great Octagonal. A lesser jockey would not have won the 95 Cox Plate, such a strong field and out riding Hall on Mahogany
A great interview Steve. 🏇
Thank you appreciate the feedback.
Hello m8 how are ya ? , looking good still , thanks for these videos , good to see young people doing their bit for the racing game , cheers old friend , if you see Malcolm J tell him fasteddy said hello and I still have one bottle of KINGSTON TOWN Port left... it is his if he wants it , or maybe you , or if there is a good fundraiser for a decent person I will donate it ok , good onya m8
Thanks for your feedback mate, I'll let MJ know when i next see him... Cheers..
@@stevehart8778 Your a CARTIER diamond , and a High Drifter to me cheers m8
Up there with the GOAT, Terry Spargo!
My Dad was a journeyman/battler jockey many years ago and he rode in NSW from 80 to 84. he mentions these 2 guys whenever he’s talking about the best jockeys in Sydney when he first went over there along with Peter Cook. Also he says John Duggan Ron Quinton and Darren Bradman as an apprentice all done their time with Theo Green
They were certainly 2 of the best jockeys in this industry, and rode some serious Racehorses.
Langby mentioned his first ride in a Melbourne Cup on a horses called Tupaki trained by Larry Wiggins, I remember back in about the mid 60's I didn't work for Larry but rode some work for him, he asked me to take Tupaki to the races for him(as the strapper) when I arrived to pick it up the horse was in a Yard and had been rolling in manure, it had dried and was still stuck to his winter Coat, so I grabbed the brushes and started to dress him, Larry said not to worry about it, it would get us a better price when the Yard watchers see the long winter coat and scruffy condition(I think he had not long came out of the South Island of New Zealand) he was right he blew like a gale and won easy P.S. as an interesting aside to the Larry Wiggins story, Larry was an NZedder and told me a story about his ride in a Melbourne Cup, he was riding a horse call Akbar in the 1951 Melbourne Cup, the owner said he could have the Prizemoney if he won the race, he said If I draw anywhere near the fave Delta and can get on his back and follow him I will beat him, Akbar drew one side of the field and Delta drew the other side, (can't remember if he said Akbar drew the outside barrier but I think he did) He said the only time he saw Delta in the race was in the straight when Delta went past him, Akbar ran second
Malcolm elaborates on the truth a lot, great story teller in the same vein as Davy Crockett, Mighty Kingdom easily beat Kingston Town in the Caulfield Cup ridden by Malcolm, if KT was so good, Why did Mal choose Mighty Kingdom? Mighty Kingdom was owned by the Foysters and they stood a horse called Planet Kingdom(I think he may have been the sire of Mighty Kingdom) on their Gooree Stud at Mudgee, anyway Planet Kingdom broke his leg and the stud needed a Replacement so Mighty Kingdom was retired as a young horse(that is the real reason trainers like to geld horses) when KT won the Champion stakes he was ridden by J Duggan as Mal preferred the ride on another stablemate, so that is twice that Mal showed he had little regard for KT and thought others were better
They got one thing wrong, I don't think Jack Thompson was an apprentice in the 50's, he would be about the same Vintage as Sellwood and Moore, maybe the 40's I reckon he would have started his apprenticeship in the 30's and finished in the early 40's
Thanks me old , great interview with a legend of race calling , I still remember the day at Bob Laws place and you had the late Ray Conroy as a guest there that day , still got the pic with him and I in it , hope ya well all the very best mate....Fasteddy
Thanks Fast Eddy... nice to hear from you...
Rode trackwork at Rosehill in the early 80s two legends 🐎
Malcolm is a thorough gentleman, always there to lend a helping hand, he was a top jockey & a true friend to me ! Absolute Legend 🐴
I am 63 almost...In 1973-75 i use to buy the racetrack magazine with the glossy photos of such horses as Gunsynd..its actually an image of gunsynd with Kevin langby in the mounting yard at Moonee Valley.A great image in colour and a double page..I still have it in prestine condition along with many other champions of the era... Kingstown town won in sydney in its second race start at 33-1...on the form guide it had kingstown town one start for last placing...it was a O on the form guide....After his zero he had been gelded and the rest is history.
I knew Kev when he was Bart's main rider in 1978. Great bloke top rider.
Hill is getting close to Bill Collin's standard in race calling.
He's certainly becoming one of Australia's best callers ever...
One of those voices that brings back a flood of good childhood memories. Respect!
Classic Interview Steve, especially the Kerry Packer Story from RAY. Thanks m8te !
Easiest interview ever.. he loves to talk!
Malcolm was my fav jockey of all time, back in the days when he rode Rosie Heir in a golden slipper to The King..
Terrific rider
I was at RH that day when when Kevin, Ron Quinton and Chris Gwillian all came down . It was amazing the 3 horses got up . Very few jockeys have the balance and patience of him . A great jockey .
Saw Luskin Star win all his Sydney starts, and into his 3yold year..an out and out champion, greatest 2yold we have ever seen..
Yes, he was an outstanding sprinting 2YO
Robert is a couple of years younger than me and I believe I started punting around the same time as Robert started riding. Thankyou Robert for providing me with many wonderful back pocket memories. A true legend...God bless.
Yes Debra, a true Gentleman.
If I apologize every day until I go to my grave it won't be enough...I always thought Malcolm Johnston was a "cocky bastard" My respect for the man has gone through the roof!!!
Malcolm is such a Character who is indeed a Racing Legend, as is KL... we had a lot of fun with this interview, thanks for you comments. Steve Hart.
Great man
Great man on & off the Track...

Fantastic interview. Those were the good old days!
Thanks Scott, we had plenty of fun with those two champions.
Holly molly this ray looks like a ventriloquist puppet he even has doll hair his voice sounds like it hasn't broken but then u look at his face and lhe looks very old
Robert rode my uncles horse called scarlet pattie back in the 80s , What a achievement to have the most wins in Australia! Well done Robert
The doyen of race callers....so clear and precise in his delivery...
Greatest jockeys of Australia
Another Sydney Shock Jock running on empty.
Shoulda asked about the breaky show. And if its coming back!!
John Tapp & John Hunt ,the best
Just a wonderful man & a better race caller
Here in Victoria the best was Bill Collins “ The Accurate One “
A great man with a perfect memory. I miss hearing his calls.
Clarry Conners is without doubt one of the greats - you’ll never meet a better bloke or a better trainer. I reckon he’s got one or two slipper winners yet to come...
Another great interview Steve
Great interview. Two of my absolute idols growing up and they rode my two favourite horses of all time - Gunsynd and Kingston Town!
Thank you, yes we had a lot of fun recording that interview..
Robert Thompson is the greatest jockey in Australia!
Great interview, Bill is a gentleman. Bill Picken
Thanks Bill...
