A ride on the Skokie Switt (CTA Yellow Line) in Spring of 2003, a few months before the wire came down. Filmed from the rear cab. Look for the pantograph shadow after Oakton Street.
Still under overhead wire. Unfortunately converting to 3rd rail probably makes it harder to extend north should they ever try. I can't see NIMBY towns like Northfield wanting the train running through, especially powered by 3rd rail.
Maybe bring back the wires
Nice video, and it’s actually pretty clear. Most footage from this time has terrible picture quality.
2:15 That's the provisions for the Dodge Avenue station that closed in 1948. 4:02 East Prairie station and the change to overhead wire. 5:54 Site of Oakton Street station. Building the station meant having to relocate the crossover as well as take down a few of the catenary poles along this section.
The switch from catenary to third rail wasn't until September 2004.
I can see the overhead wires and phanographs are used at this time.
WOW! This video was made in the same year that I saw my first train!

This line so needs to be extended all the way to Northfield. This would aid traffic issues up and down the Skokie Valley.
They once studied extending it as far as Lake-Cook Road, but Northbrook & Northfield objected.
I can't believe that was what Howard used to look like! It really changed during the 2006-2009 renovation!!!!
In 2003: Single Skokie Station CTA. 2015: Oakton and Dempster-Skokie.
great video
Great! I remember riding the big heavy red over green North Shore trains from Dempster all the way to the Loop when I was a little kid (also Silverliners, but I liked the old style cars better). I hate having to change to the L at Howard Street when I go back to visit.
Круто! Вот это я понимаю - поезд и от контактного рельса питается, и от воздушной контактной сети!
@Amtrak1194 Wire fatigue, basically the extra maintenance. And the 3rd rail means they can bring on trains w/out pans.
Taking down the wires also allowed for more car flexibility. Because it meant the line wasn't restricted to a fleet of 16 3200-series cars with pantographs.
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing. I remember riding the Swift in the 70's and always was haunted by the abandoned stations.
