Voices of Resilience: Personal Stories Breaking the Stigma of Substance Use Disorder
This webinar was recorded on October 9, 2024.
This is a pre-recorded webinar and is no longer eligible for continuing education credits. Check out future events for more opportunities.
Substance Use Disorder is one of the most stigmatized health conditions in the world. Research indicates that stigma is persistent, pervasive, and rooted in the belief that addiction is a personal choice reflecting a lack of willpower and a moral failing. Stigma contributes to barriers in accessing treatment. People may fear being labeled or judged if they seek help, leading to delays in getting the care they need. Healthcare providers' attitudes and behaviors toward substance use disorder (SUD) can significantly impact patient outcomes and the overall approach to addressing addiction within healthcare systems.
During this webinar and interactive discussion, learn more about concrete strategies on how to breakdown internal biases that we hold. Additionally, we will hear from two Shatterproof Ambassadors who will share their personal stories on their journey to recovery and how stigma deeply impacted their lives and success.
The Overdose Prevention Engagement Network is a diverse team dedicated to improving lives and reducing harms of substance use. By engaging with individuals, communities, and organizations, we share education and resources to strengthen person-centered prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Meanwhile every single patient that has contacted us that lost access to this clinic has been forced off of their medication first visit. Who is helping those patients?

With over 50,000 pain patients abandoned in MICHIGAN why can’t this model be put into place with pain patients? I know what that webinar was about I attended it as a Michigan pain advocate. And we deserve medications and we are turned away. PCP’s don’t want us cause they are afraid of DEA. We are being force tapered and we are choosing suicide as the only option to end the pain cause nobody in healthcare wants to help us treat pain with the medication that works

These pain patients arent PSYCH PATIENTS! We live in physical pain with real diagnoses’ and you all wanna send us to PSYCH! What are we doing?! These people just want to LIVE, WORK and they aren’t SUD! And we don’t want what INDIVIOR and U OF M is pushing! Bupe/Suboxone is a terrible pain drug. And we want our TEETH! The side effects from those drugs are way severe!

Why can’t this same model be used when an abandoned pain pt on opioids losing their provider? Why can’t the ER continue the meds and ensure they get continued care? It’s nearly impossible for a pain to yo get in w a new provider in time before running out of meds - and often if they do the dr won’t rx first visit

I enjoyed the presentation and appreciate your thoughtful questions. Unless the patient's blood is tested for Mitragynine and all other substances and a test of the actual product taken it should not be reported as kratom. Educate patients that there are safe vendors who follow GMP standards and lab test all batches indicating the level of the alkaloids and any contaminants. Dr said there are better alternatives. I haven't found any for burning spinal and leg pain that I can tolerate. Kratom is the best and safe using a qualified vendor.

End the negative stigma on this amazing botanical. It's gotten out of hand IMHO. The KCPA (Kratom Consumer Protection Act) is being passed in multiple states in order to self regulate for safety. Age restrictions just like Alcohol should be in place. The Federal KCPA needs to be passed.

Poly substance is always involved when a MIT toxicity COD is listed on a Death Certificate. There is no official LD50 for Kratom so how can an ME list that as the COD? There have been people who were shot, and fell out of a window that were labeled MIT toxicity. Please explain that. Thank you.

I do not condone extract, gas station, or smoke shop products. cGMP providers only. It's a supplement and should be treated as such, and regulated for safety. FDA refuses. Millions of people have successfully stopped opioids with Kratom tea. We need harm reduction strategies. Not just #BigPharma options.

#KeepKratomLegal for all of us that utilize safe plain leaf tea. People need more options than just Rx meds. Even the FDA wouldn't testify in court that Kratom is dangerous because they can't. They're studying that now. Trials and studies in progress.
