If you need advice, or an example to follow, you have come to the wrong place. This is simply entertainment, mostly for me. Please don't emulate me, if you do it is at your own risk and some of this stuff is risky.

The thing I didn't mention is that JVC say that the tone arm is low intertia. It is made of aluminium and it is very short. The theory is that there will be less stylus movement as a result of a warp in the record. The optimum tracking force is between 1 and 1.75 grams with a nominal weight of 1.5 according to my service manual.

I use counter pieces for my sandpaper lapping plates as you can generally average out the surface imperfections. Also makes for generally good enough rough inspections plates for like cast things so you don’t scratch the good one Also your DIY repeatometer is not enough to inspect to even like B grade, a really wide tenths dial works enough to see if you have big dips (anything over like 3 tenths means toast for real flatness)
I picked up a very similar tool set from Amazon, and used it to swap connectors on an ATX power supply. As he demonstrated in the video, the single-pin tool did the trick. I was able to work it down into each side of the pin, rocking it slightly to flatten the tabs. I then gripped the nylon connector with pliers and pulled out the wire. Be aware: the tradeoff for using a cheap tool instead of spending $35 or more on a better depinning tool, is that you will likely end up with at least one hole in your finger. There are sharp edges on the depinning tools, and on the connectors once you pull them out of the housing. After cleaning up the blood, I did the following: 1) Wrapped electrical tape around the top of the depinning tool (mine was just a bare metal ring with a blade on one end) 2) Wore gloves 3) Gripped the housing with pliers while I pulled on each wire I was able to finish the job with no more bleeding.

I'm sure my original competition pro buttons worked the same, I think it's useful that way for left and right handed players, I don't know anything that uses a second fire button.
The second button is worth the effort just for Turrican on the Amiga. It works the same as spacebar. There is a good long list on the EAB (English Amiga Boards). Will add a link to the description, thanks for raising this.
@@benjaminsbench I spent many hours on Turrican 2 back in the day, great game.
Looks familiar!
just got mine yesterday thanks for the video.
And seems to support button 3, like Amiga and almost all Commodores and Atari do. I could make one of these myself, or plug it in and use a program. But it's kinda nifty to have on the bench.
I can't think of any Amiga games that require 2 fire buttons. I left the little red buttons disconnected and wired the 2 big buttons together for left and right handed players to use. I rewired one of these with a d-plug to use with my Amiga.
There are quite a few, added a link to a list on EAB in this video's description too. Cheers.
@@benjaminsbench The cable I got off ebay didnt have the extra fire button wire, something for people who want a cable to note.
@@JoeBlogs720 that's disappointing. Mine was from Ali-Express. All nine wires present.
@@benjaminsbench I was surprised to find so many Amiga games adapted to e.g. jump with button 2 instead of up on the joystick. You can even jump with button 2 in Turrican II now, thanks to moving the "roll/smartbomb" action to button 3 instead of button 2. I've done a lot of testing, and e.g. the TIKUS USB to Amiga adapter makes all buttons button 1, while HID2AMI handles multiple buttons, adds a button to 'up' for unpatched games (and also switches to mouse with scrollwheel support if you plug in a mouse!) I've been at my bench too, so now I have 5 options for joysticks: 2 are Happ Controls arcade sticks with blade-switched buttons (the deluxe option), one is a converted NOS 3-button MSX joystick with autofire sold in the 80s, one is the Boomerang CD32 controller (which is crap), and one is a $9.99 SNES clone USB pad (which is better than the Boomerang). I also concluded that if you have a fave Megadrive controller, definitely go for the ready-made adapters (but make sure they support more than 2 buttons). Older pads are very small, tight, and cheaply made, sometimes for multiple systems with patches already on the PCB, which makes them risky and fiddly to buy and mod.
That TAC2 joystick, looks very nice but doesnt have micro-switches, right?
It does not. There is a steel ball on the bottom end of the joystick shaft that clatters around inside a box with four electrically separated sides. It is a very positive feeling stick because the stick stops moving in the same moment contact is made.
I bought one. Complete waste of money as it didn't even work straight out of the box.
That's no good at all. The seller or manufacturer may be able to help. I'm assuming you have a good battery in it. Mine was fine, I have no idea beyond that.
I've got several grave masonry offcuts. They are all terrible. I can tell they are bad even using a long school ruler. I'm thinking about getting a new float glass piece. My previous one broke.
This one just cropped up on my feed, so yeah, here's me commenting 5 years down the line, not so much for Benjamin, but for those coming later. There's people here commenting that this is not a good test, and to a certain extent they are right. If this is a flat(ish) surface with a maximum deviation of ±25 microns over 10 cm, or a concave spheroid(ish) surface with maximum deviation of ±25 microns over 10 cm, , or a convex spheroid(ish)… you won't be able to tell using this setup. A machinists level can tell you, and an autocollimator can tell you, but that's about it. However, it's unlikely to be a spheroid, which is usually achieved by lapping (see telescope mirrors, etc), it's far more likely to be flat(ish) But. If what you want to do with it does not require more accuracy than that, it's fine. And most home shops do not require more accuracy than that for most uses of a "surface plate". Maybe if you're reconditioning machines, or measuring pieces that require high accuracy. Most of us aren't doing that. Most of us will be using it with a height gauge for measuring or marking out. It's fine in that respect. It'll get 90% of what you want done. What I would be more worried about is surface durability. Anyway, it's a good example of what you can find "over the counter" (if you'll excuse the pun).
Thanks for the clear explanation. I probably don’t need a surface plate but I will keep my eyes open for granite like this. Might be fun to figure out how inaccurate it is. If I can’t figure out a problem with it, I probably don’t need a better one. :)
@@gf2e Oh, you probably do need a surface plate, even if you don't know it yet. The same way everyone needs a lathe :) Headstones are often made from granite, and offcuts are cheap.
@@wibblywobblyidiotvision I feel like there is some sort of morbid connection between people getting lathes they don’t need, and tombstones. I do want a lathe, because I often want weird screws that I can’t easily find locally. Clearly, I need a Tornos :)
@@gf2e You can measure how flat the surface is with your indicator and a 'reference bar' that covers the surface's diagonals. The bar does not have to be a perfect straightedge, just straight enough to be measured within the range of your indicator. First, measure the bar's thickness variations at the ends and center with a micrometer, or by setting-up the indicator over a single point of contact in the middle of your surface and sliding the bar under the indicator. You don't need to read everywhere (just the ends and middle) and you don't need the actual thicknesses (just the variations measured with your set-up). The difference between the end readings is the bar's 'taper', and the center reading minus the average of the ends is the bar's 'bulge' (or 'neck' if it is negative). Second, support the bar on its ends and zero the indicator at the bar's center. Rotate the bar 180 degrees around the long axis, and read the indicator's change. That is your bar's 'bend'. From the bulge and the bend you can calculate the bow/sag at the center of each of the bar's surfaces. Now you can use the bar to measure the surface's bow/sag in the center, and the 'twist' between the diagonals. You can also characterise the same bar over other distances for the surface's length and width, or the sub-span of a measurement grid.
@@gf2e I find my lathe incredibly useful. One thing to do is start any project by asking yourself 'can it be round'. This is usually a new way of thinking about stuff. If the answer is yes then making it can be joyous lathe work.
Most home machinists don't need and can't achieve any better accuracy than your countertop cutoff. Great demo! I'm working on naval guns that were made between 1910 and 1942 and the quality of machining on the original parts is amazing but as long as I can hit within .0005" the parts fit and work.
Promo'SM 🎉
You could get 3 and rub them together for even greater accuracy!

I'm wanting to make a converter for my Archer Amiga joystick with an esp32 to convert from the 9pin to usb. Just need to get the right esp32 that can do HID
Good project, it seems though that for $35 US a person can buy a joystick with the 9 Pin to USB PCB included + rapid fire. Would be good to have a converter that is configurable though. Might do another video if my expectation that the USB board inside the competition pro can be used in a project box pans out.
I made 1 from scratch, shooting for .005 for woodworking, but easily got .002. The indicator setup you used cannot pick up widely-spaced holes and high places. I used a home-made precision spirit lever with 3-point contact.
It is most certainly a rough look. Would not pick up a large sphere either as another commenter pointed out.
This specific, particular model DAC, XDA-2, had the right design here. It's a real shame Emotiva didn't keep this model & continue to refine it. Full size, extra inputs, balanced & a toroid. If they had dumped the headphone section and volume control (use gain settings) and put the money into socketed, upgraded opamps, for example, they really could have kept a winner. They also could have continued to improve USB and optical (to ir? ip? glass fiber coming soon). I like the Bit Rate display. Too bad. I've found 5 other used DACs with about equal designs (easy picture searches); 1. Benchmark DAC1 (w/USB if possible) +-$500 used Incredible quality. none better. 2. Parasound ZDac v2 DAC +-$300 3. Bryston BDA-1 DAC +-$600 Is what the Emotiva was copying. 4. SMSL SU-8 DAC +-$225 chinese, but used so O.K. 5. Rotel rdd-1580 DAC +-$450 be cautious of the drivers I can't make a claim as to the sound but the constructions make them attractive as used pieces. Oxtoolco has some videos on accurate surface plate measurement and conditioning. Robrenz might have a few and possibly the 3 plate method with some basic theory. Overboard for your purposes but interesting non the less. Iirc the origins of precision is another one.
Great start! Looking forward to the rest!
Nice work :) I worked for Phoenix Microtechnologies back in the day. It looks like you have a coin cell to run the RTC. The original part we used was a VL2020 *rechargeable* battery. (going from memory). If you was to use a (non-rechargeable) lithium coin cell you will want to remove the charging circuit to avoid any nasty bangs.
Thanks for confirming that. I have purchased an ML2032 (rechargable) to put into that holder for next time I use the machine.

Im surprised how precise that clamp is, given that it measures magnetic flux. Its really well calibrated.
It is remarkable. The instructions do recommend centering the conductor in the clamp but it is not bad regardless. The AC meters, and perhaps the AC function of this one, I do not know, have a much less difficult time of it of course :)
Awesome video. I'll have to find a place to get some granite near me. Thanks for sharing.
That's really cool. It's definitely unique but at the same time actually really practical. Maybe there's a case, for a case that's like that low profile. With the A3000 style a1500 cases around out there. Maybe a more slim line a1000 styled solution could gain some ground. The A1000 really was the nicest looking Amiga. Yeah the a3000 style is cool. But the A1000 is clearly the best. If I could get an annual l Amiga back in the day though with a 1U profile. Like Mac SE030 type case in size. Yeah I would have loved that
I prefer the big box stuff including the really slim big box shown here :) I honestly cannot say which I prefer for looks, the 1000 or 3000 case, but the keyboard garage in the A1000 makes it the winner. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
