    I tried this, still found some that night. Just resorted to checking them each night and shaking them off into a bowl. Seems to have reduced the numbers a lot. Or I could just get a flame thrower. 🙄

      @darreneverestdahlias7725 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The netting I grow through is pea and bean netting. It's available in different widths 1m, 1.5m and 2m from Tildanet. The posts are 5 or 6ft in length knocked in to around 4ft above ground. I use two layers of netting, the first layer is 1m wide and the second is 1.5m. Hope that helps.

      A good question,, I'm not sure, I guess it might as I've not had any damage to the blooms when I've used this method so maybe it does, however, I do protect my plants from slugs and snails anyway so it's difficult to say for sure.

    may I ask what "selecting the breaks" means?

    • @darreneverestdahlias7725
      @darreneverestdahlias7725 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Selecting the breaks means that I only want a certain amount of blooms to flower on a particular plant. Giants for example I will only allow a maximum of 3 blooms to flower on each plant. Whereas a small might be anything from 7 to 14 blooms depending on the variety. I have used a double stop method this year on all my mediums and smaller which means I took the top out of the plant when I planted out out at the end of May. At the beginning of July I took the top out of all the side shoots that had developed thus the term double stop. From all the leaf joints more lateral growth has grown very quickly. If I were to leave it all I would end up with too many of a small and inferior quality. I therefore remove all unwanted laterals and just leave the ones I want.

      It has been a lot of work across the whole of the garden so the Dahlias haven't had as much attention as I had envisaged when we moved. Next year, once all the other projects are completed, hopefully they'll get a bit more time on them to get them where I would like them to be. Also, I'll try and get the timing right!

    Hi Jason, I would normally have posts every 10 plants so they are only about 15 feet apart. The ones I had on my new plot were too far apart and they did suffer late in the season when the plants got very big. I wouldn't put them any further than 15 feet apart as they can still struggle in high winds to hold the bigger plants. I use windbreak screen around the plot to try and help keep wind damage to a minimum.

  • @jasonhahn4470
    @jasonhahn4470 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for sharing the videos! We have had that wind here in the states also. I had a question about the netting on previous vids on how to secure it. I stretched it on fence post last year but some plants got so big they fell over and pulled the slack out of the net and ended up on the ground. It looked like you didn't have hardly any posts holding yours up. Any help would be great

    It sounds like your plant has got a virus. If it appears stunted and with blistered leaves its almost certainly so. Only thing you can do is pull it up and dispose of it on the bonfire. Don't compost it as the virus can be passed on.

    Hi Darren, Looks like things are going pretty well there for you. Like you, I had a few Sheval Megan this year, and also like you, I found them a little shallow, and the middles took ages to come out, and by that time the back petals faded a little. Maybe I'll do them under cover next year to see if that improves things. But they're very promising and worth another go I think. By the way, do you sell any rooted cuttings you have left over during propagation season? I'm looking to buy quite a few cuttings of a few varieties, if you were interested in contacting me? Jason

    Hi Darren, I've hada really bad year so far. Not too many cuttings to take from my 100 tubers, and the growth on them was kind of stunted and strange. Then on top of that, what cuttings I did get have taken ages to root resulting in more loses than normal. Also, a strangely large amount of hollow stemmed, even at this time of year, ( I set my tubers off early this year in December). Then to top it all, about 50% of the plants that I did get to root, seemed to get some kind of virus or something and the leaves shrivelled. So overall it's been a bad season for me in terms of propagation. Having said all that, the cuttings that I have managed to save are now doing a little better and progressing slowly but healthily it seems. I don't think I will start the tubers off so early next year!!
