It's ironic, the first cross cultural, mixed race movement was high jacked by the extreme right and is now seen by many people to be the hight of racism. I was a Skin back in '69-"70, we loved the look, the music, we didn't give a monkeys' about colour, politics or any of that crap.

I was a Skinhead in the late 1970s-1980s and i loved Ska and the Jamacian influence. I then started listening to OI music and had the OI tattooed on my forearm,untill i relised OI wasn't the Skinhead beliefs i had as it was a lot more Nationlist hardcore which i didn't really want to get into. I loved the OI Guitars and drums and the anger against the system,i loved being a Skinhead who hated the establishment,but i didn't like or agree with the racist element of OI,so i got out of it. But my heart is still Skinhead,like they say it's a way of life.

The racist side of Skin culture was going strong in my neck of the woods in the North West UK in 1980/81/82, I was ten years old in 1980, we looked up to the older lads as you do when your a kid. I remember there wasn't anything shocking about kids getting skinheads back then, although I was thrown out of school a few times for having Chelsea Sevens carved into the side of my head. in some strange way I was lucky fate intervened, and put the kibosh on me becoming a fully fledged Skin, because heroin took hold of my city in a massive and devastating way, it was like punks/mods/ and skins vanished in one go, so much so by the time 1983 come around, nobody gave a flying siht about anything other than smack... I have a theory on the sudden arrival of that disgusting drug, but that's for another subject...

Skinheads were a short lived gang their origins were from the Mods. The mods rival was the Rockers who evolved into the Greasers so it was gang war between Skinhead and Greasers. The Skinhead era quickly faded out as they realised what idiots they looked in their Harrington jackets, Jeans to short, Doc martin boots coupled with the fact they lost every beach fight around the country to the Greasers and by 1972 they were now the Smoothies dressed in stay bright trousers, Overcoats and some even carrying umbrellas.

I was at boarding school in S E London in the late 60s and met and had fun with skinheads at Eltham Common. We fired sky rockets down storm drains there. Later ended up being a skinhead myself in New Zealand in the late 70's Good to se oild friends here, pauline Black, Gary Bushell etc oh, and Symond Laws 😁

As for the question of racism ? I’m bemused , after all if I was considered a racist being a skinhead, then why on earth did we adopt Trojan music as our thing ! Load of bollox in my view , the world’s has gone tits up … the skinhead name was infiltrated by German football followers who adopted the skinhead look and where extremely racist,, giving British skinheads a bullshit name of racist !

Hi Don, initially the white working class welcomed and embraced Jamaicans and their culture so what happened? Maybe as kids the Jamaicans/blacks growing up, bullied smaller white kids thus fostering distrust and animosity towards immigrants and things just snowballed from there. You knew Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon well, are they liars and have you dismissed their experiences as meaningless because i`ve yet to see this angle explored in any of your work. Also, do you think many other white people experienced the same things as those Clash members because whites going from trusting and accepting to being hateful and intolerant is some leap. What was the cause of the sea-change?

I bought one new back when they came out and used it allot,,,then put it away for a few years,,until now and when I got it back out today,,I forgot how to fly it. lol Just tried and the batteries are no good. They charge up but critical fail as soon as I am in the air. Just ordered a new battery. These are the best drone for the money,,I paid $700 for it at that time. Easy to fly,,good controls and distance. The pics and video are great. Ill be flying again soon.

What a great documentary I was born 1958 and remember these days so well❤ I loved the Jamaican culture and still do I’ve never had a problem with black people, I love their style, their music, their love of sport and fashion…it’s Muslims that I have a problem with and their radical mindset.

Been a skinhead since 1968. I'm well old now lol This is a superb documentary by the great Don. Used to see Don a lot down the Grove and at Acklam Hall. Hung out with him and Mick Jones. Went to loads of gigs back then. The Clash (obviously) X-Ray Specs, Madness, The Selecter, Bodysnatchers, Sham 69 (of course) Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff (R.I.P) so so many. Greatest times of my life. I wouldn't change a single moment of them.
