Hi! Welcome to our youtube channel. Our films and clips are of our adventures on the Scottish west coast in our yacht Zuma, a Jeanneau Fantasia. We publish these films to provide information and maybe a bit of inspiration to others who are doing similar things. We also share here those films which have inspired us or provided us with information we have found useful.

We have been unable to sail our dinghy for 18 months due to Covid. On Good Friday we took advantage of the easing of restrictions to enjoy a bit of socially distanced sailing at our home club. One of my lockdown projects was to edit some of the footage I have of trips made in the past. This series of clips is from March 2010 and is an account of a trip by two DCA Wayfarer dinghies on Loch Etive, one of Scotland's most beautiful and longest sea lochs. We had to modify our plans early in the trip and so sailed only on the part of the loch north of Taynuilt. The weather was mixed and va...

Wow Charlie, I must have missed the notification, super trip and vid!
@@kevparr Thanks, Kev. Hope all is well.
Большое спасибо за Ваш фильм! Зима стала чуточку короче 😊 и пришло вдохновение!
@@maestro2j Thanks for your comment.
Thanks guys that was a fantastic series, loved the scenery and music. That year i done Millport to Portree & Plockton single handed but in company of another boat from Millport, though he done the Crinnan route and i done the MOK Gigha route and we met at Crinnan. We done most of the cruise motoring as very little wind. End of june to mid july. 2022 we done Orkney both single handed via Crinnan and Caladonia, 37 day cruise. Got to Rothesay in 2023 😂
@@sligeach yours sounds like some adventure. What's your boat name. We will keep our eyes out for you.
The castle is portencross
Best video I’ve seen this year. I do the same thing as you guys. Happy sailing in stunning Clyde
Glad you enjoyed it! Enjoy your sailing.
Thanks for taking the time to watch. It's a good thing we do.
Thanks for watching. The Clyde is indeed stunning. Enjoy.
What a great adventure, Charlie! Thank you for the excellent videos.
@@TonyKeyes Thanks for watching.
Wonderful trip and nicely recorded. Thanks for taking us along. Do you have an adventure planned with the Wayfarer?
Brilliant vids. Thanks!
What an understated account of such an adventure. Shame about the go-pro, couldn't you have used your dictaphone? Bon voyage !
Thanks for watching. I had great plans for videoing this trip. I had two gopros with me but left one in the car (Doh!). I also had a Sony HD video camera with me but I keep that in a barrel when I am sailing: it's not very water tolerant. I only had a beat up old Huawei phone inside a waterproof case to use on the go. The gopro was on one of those table top stands balanced on the leeboard thwart. It did have a lanyard but I had not clipped it on. (Doh, doh!) You live and learn I suppose.
Tremendous effort there, very well done indeed. Thanks for posting.
You were there, had an overnighter, wonderful...... and when you come back, I will look forward to more detail on the how , what, wheres and whyfors....👍
Wow the water levels look really low compared to my visit last year
Thanks for watching. That is interesting. We ended up here after bailing on a trip on the Teifi due to the levels being too high. Photos I had seem must have been taken in the summer and showed the burns as really dry and so we were surprised that we were able to get the boat into the loch without too much carrying. What time of year did you go? Need to get it penciled in for the new year. With a decent trolley this time!
You got a night out in a tent in the wilderness so not a complete failure. I purchased a trolly similar to yours but haven't used it yet. Now that I see what happened to yours I am going to make my own and use mountain bike rims and tires. Thanks for the video. I always enjoy your presentations. Ron, Maine,USA
I think the trolley would have been OK. Steve thought it was sort of suspect before we went. He had lent it to his neighbour to shift some building materials.! My old home-made one would have done the job, I think. Hey ho! Thanks for watching.
Wonderful and isn’t there just something magical about bacon in the wild! Thank you very much for this gem of a film.
Absolutely love this one Charlie. Fresh mussels and bacon!
I have a mirror dinghy which I plan to cruise extensively now that I’m retired. But I think envy you Wayfarer folk😉
Interesting. I am Bosun at my local club. I was recently working on two GRP Mirror clones belonging to the club and thinking these would make excellent solo dinghy cruising boats! Enjoy your retirement.
It’s remarkable how the YT algorithm brings me videos of an area I kayaked just days before! How did it know? I had never searched for videos before going there.
Beats the heck out of me. Hope you enjoyed your trip.
@@charliehitchen5263 I did. Wondrous seenery. Great weather and conditions.
Good to see you again. Do you still sail the Wayfarer?
Yes. Wayfarer and siling canoe as well. Thanks for watching.
What a lovely trip. In the wind and the weather. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching, John. Glad you enjoyed it.
Lovely video. I had a Wanderer for about thirty years and day sailed in and around Loch Sween. Loved your flexible approach. I suppose the gales could have spoiled a fixed plan but you both had an excellent week and lots of lovely weather!!! Great video!
Thanks for watching. You are so right about the flexible approach. You can get yourself into big trouble by trying to keep to a plan when the weather is not on your side. We were in the Loch Sween area and the Macormaigs this summer in a small yacht. Such a lovely area and the Wanderer is a great boat to enjoy it in.
What a most excellent adventure in one of the most beautiful places! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching. Need to get back there soon!
What a beautiful place.
We think so. A place full of history and mystery for us. Thanks for watching.
Lovely adventure, fair winds sailors
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind wishes.
love watching you video do you have more - i will be sailing a cl16 (similar to Wayfarer) boat next year and would be very interested to know how you organize your boat for a six day trip - do you always sleep on land?
Hi Barry, Thanks for watching. Yes we never sleep in the dinghy. Too much like hard work and bloody uncomfortable. If we camp on shore we always get a good night's sleep, we can walk about and explore a bit and we can light a fire which we always enjoy. We generally have a watertight barrel each for clothes and one for sleeping bags and mats. The tent and food are in drybags. We also have a waterproof toolbox that we use for stoves and a small barrel for cameras, phones, etc. You can see the barrels, etc at about 9:30 of this video.th-cam.com/video/H8M0rO3FAaE/w-d-xo.html The barrels go in the back locker of the Wayfarer and the drybags go under into the space under the front deck. I hope that this helps. Happy to answer any further questions. Enjoy your cruising.
Really enjoyed that, what a wonderful trip, a pleasure to watch.
Well done video. I love the scenery. The ham and egg is the real deal, in my opinion. I like that both of you seem to be enjoying the day. One of the best sailing videos I've seen.

Spent a week canoeing this river in 1977 BRILLIANT trip !!....
very nice Charlie and just shows how much there is to explore on the Clyde ! 😊
Amen to that. The film only just scratches the surface of this brilliant sailing area. Thanks for watching.
I just gave a presentation to my yacht club here in California about my "dream Scottish Cruise" which is almost exactly what you did, just add a leg up into Loch Etive. You did it in a Swift 18. OK, then!!! I will be looking into trailer sailers again!
Thanks for watching. It is a dream to sail on the Scottish West Coast. We had dream weather too. There is a written account of this trip that I wrote for the Journal of the Dinghy Cruising Association. I need to work out how to attach it here.
Very very good.🤟.😊🚣🏾
Thanks, John.
Very good, what a fantastic part of the world👍.
Thanks for watching, John. West Coast of Scotland. Just the place for dinghy cruising. Where do you hail from?
Bellísimos lugares de Escocia, y un hermoso video de vuestra aventura.... gracias por compartirlo.
Thanks for watching!
Great music.
Is that not Broughtyferry Castle in the first clip. That is on the Tay on the east coast.
Hi Douglas. Thanks for watching. The castle in the first clip is Portencross Castle. This is about ten miles south of Largs and stands at the mouth of the upper Firth of Clyde. There is a corresponding castle across the Firth of Clyde on the island of Little Cumbrae. The two castles originate in the same period though Broughtyferry is a grander affair with the attached fortifications. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portencross_Castle
Great video…wonder if the Scottish Tourist Board would be interested 😃😃….say hello to us on yacht cumfae next time you are in Rothesay
Lovely video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching. It was fun making it and reliving ten years' memories.
Absolutely stunning guys .you truly are living the dream and what a fantastic video for the world to watch along.
Thanks, Boss. Need to get back into a dinghy a bit this year.
What a beautiful compilation video. Brilliant guys. Best wishes for 2023.👍🏴
Thanks for watching. All the best to you too.
Enjoyed seeing you in Kip Marina this summer. Tried to watch the talk on zoom but the meeting hasn't started. Fair winds.
Hi Thanks for watching. Covid would you believe got me two days before the talk. On the 13th I could hardly talk for a minute never mind an hour. I had to tell the hosts to cancel. 😞 Sorry if the message did not get out. Seems to be improving but still testing positive. Some talk of rescheduling for January.
@@charliehitchen5263 hope you feel better soon. I'll keep an eye out for a rescheduled talk and your next video!
Cracking scenes there guys and I hope that was a good malt youse downed ☺️ The Birdseye view of glen Callum bay (Callum s hole) reminded me of the evening a few years ago when my mate and I anchored our boats in there and slogged our way to the point you took that photo/video from, just to discover my mate,s boat drifting south out of the bay, we made our way down to the dinghy a hell of a lot faster than going up and so glad there was an outboard on it.🙄😁. If I wasn't restrained in Millport (ferry schedule) I would attend your talk at kip.🏴🏴👍
Thanks for watching. Some experience in Callum's Hole there!! The talk is online so maybe you can catch it. The zoom number is at the end.
Looks some lovely scenic sailing - thankls for sharing - loved the fishing bird shots too :)
Thanks for watching. The talk is coming up on Tuesday. So lucky to be able to sail this wonderful area.
Been enjoying many of the videos you've uploaded recently! I currently own a wayfarer and am looking into a swift 18... Would you rate it as a decent upgrade? I'm keen for the security of a keelboat but want something that would still be easily trailerable, they look like a good option...
Thanks for watching. The Swift was a good boat for us and we did some adventurous stuff in her. She did not sail as well as the Wayfarer and we tweeked her quite a bit to make her sail better. Build quality was excellent though. We kept her for three years and went on to buy another Wayfarer and a 27ft yacht. Remember that the Swift is only an 18ft boat. You still need to pick your days and stay on the side of caution. Enjoy your sailing.
@@charliehitchen5263 Thanks for the advice Charlie! Interesting that you ended up going back to a Wayfarer, perhaps I'll stick with mine a little longer, stop window shopping and save some money for actual adventuring😄
@@mbailey9955 The Swift sailed like a dog when we first bought her. We set the mast up correctly and that was better. Next we raised the motor in the well which pulled the prop up behind the stub keel. Much better! She was great downwind particularly with a kite we bought in a boat jumble; decent off the wind; pretty poor upwind in anything like a chop. Then she would fall off the waves and she needed some motor to keep her on track. I guess a few micro yachts have the same failings. We don't regret having bought her and she never let us down.
As with all your videos Excellent. Thanks for sharing.♥️👍
Thanks for watching and your kind comment.
Great stuff! That's my cruising area in my Sigma 33c. Been in Tinkers Hole a few times.
Thanks for watching. We have been a few times in a bigger boat. It felt a bit out there in our old 18 footer.
@@charliehitchen5263 thanks for posting. Had a lively wee sail today from! Linnie to Dunstafnage, heating and steak on.
Beautiful video and beautiful music. Keep them coming.👍👍👍
Thanks for watching. A couple more in the pipeline.
Lovely footage. At 3:37 it looks like you’ve no boom. Later it is back. Did I get that right?
Thanks for watching. No the boom is there all the time. At 3:37 I am reefed and the fold of the sail covers the boom.
Beautiful!
Thanks for watching and your kind comment.
Very entertaining and nicely filmed. I have just bought a wayfarer and can’t wait to be doing something similar.
Thanks for watching. Enjoy your Wayfarer.
Thanks for the very nice video. The Van Morrison song at the end clinched it! Please post many more family trips with you two...
Thanks for watching and your positive comment. We like a bit of Van Morrison too. Some people say that they would prefer the "natural" sound rather than music. The sound recorded by an old waterproof video camera is so poor. In any sailing setting, the sound is like a rhino rolling around in a giant bowl of natchos!
@@charliehitchen5263 Charlie Do both... You have a talent for editing and composition. Rock on!
