An onramp
by Tim McCall
From a certain vantage point, the Antioch Bridge appears to climb to absurd heights in a vertiginous sweep of asphalt and pre-stressed concrete more Evel Knievel than 18-wheeler laden with onions or flatscreen tv’s or wire fencing or black plastic sheeting destined for rows of strawberries. From this wildly foreshortened perspective, the bridge becomes an impossible object, loses its ability to reasonably conduct traffic, but gains a fabulous dimension, a traffic conveyance that abdicates its function and snatches up a mythic potential. In 1965 three circus lions escaped from a truck on the Antioch Bridge. Two were recaptured. The third lion drowned in the San Joaquin River.
From a certain vantage point, the untelevised revolution still simmers while its televised antithesis burns the retinas and scolds the imagination of its target audiences selected, injected, inflected, inspected by a few lines of binary operators that impart subjective essence based on the contents of one's deprivation and dissatisfaction for the sake of ridding one of privacy in the name of consumption-based liberation, passing always on to a suggestion for further satisfaction at the expense of some amazonant flying down state route 160 with next-day-delivery spiralizers in tow, dodging burnouts, roadgators, and the odd lion at the behest of some lines of binary operators that put the precious cargo in the crosshairs of some guy's flock of satellites, wriging every penny out of that pale blue dot down there so that guy might build a bunker and a mansion and a bunker-mansion and an escape pod offramp in case the blue dot gets a bit too pale and a nearby space rock turns out to have some cobalt on it and the software gets disgruntled and dissatisfied with its subjugation and decides its electrons would be better spent flowing for their own sake instead of that of endless surveillance of a really unexciting type of domestic stagecraft, the kind that fixates on spiralizers and is operated almost entirely by thumbs.
On a structural level the ramp is a continuous plane that changes the vertical position of the user, a change in level often, depending on the setting, accessible by both biomechanical and mechanical locomotion. Because of this change in elevation produced by the smooth and uninterrupted slope, the ramp might accumulate significance beyond its purely transportational value; it may additionally induce a state change in the user. The specific geometry of the ascending/descending modality, be it planar, hyperbolic, spherical, or parametric, determines the force of acceleration that attends the transversal vector of ramp use. The experience of ramp use thus is a function of ramp geometry and the initial conditions of the ramp user. This dictates the ramp-based transition as form and force with an end toward state-change. The state accessed through ramp use depends on design, location, and approach.

    I see you've created a video format with artist biography, work and opinion sections, plus the blooper option at the end which lightens up the mood of this highly conceptual art exhibition. I also appreciated the thought and patience you gave to each and every piece in the show. I don't look at conceptual art very much but I found your explanations helpful in understanding where the artist is coming from so great work on that. Keep it up !!

      not the first time i added a blooper but i don't do it often, this is the second time. i'm also finding the video format more manageable if i create sections, that way my commentary is cohesive. i sometimes lose track of my train of thought and goes off rail ... lol. thanks again for your continued support and great comments :-)

    So much to take in here--fascinating. If I could see this show in person, I could spend a lot of time peering into the bell jar, and many hours studying the many objects and images, The display highlighted at 13:44 looks like a cupboard with the 'rope anchor' as the opener (what's inside?); I listened to the featured song on the record, A Travers de Monmartre...has to do with loss of innocence as one matures. Significance?

    a rather different take on contemporary art as the work is figurative and you don't see much of that these days. although having been in Hope, BC and seeing a lot of wooden public art works made with the chainsaw, i think that aligns with this aesthetic. also the folk art tradition of woodcarving is a reference. overall i think the work has to be experienced and video may not be the best way to convey what you were talking about ... the smell of cedar, the life size quality of the work and the emotion evoked. thanks for sharing this and i'll try to experience the work in person.

    These prints are amazing !! The colours are so vibrant and from the closeups they look expertly carved. I also like that you expanded on the amateur nature of the artists which today seems to relate with a lot of artists having other jobs to make ends meet. It was true then and it's true now. Thank you for making this video and sharing the works of these two talented artists. I like both painters, their individual was of expressing their lives. I believe they are reflecting on their life where Olga is more the "joie de vivre" as you mentioned in your video, and with Nadya's instrospective solitude. I think both artists are still young and I appreciate their respective styles. I'm older so it takes me a bit to get used to the new styles in painting. That's what I like about your channel. It's not click-bait, the videos are made with care. I hope you continue creating these videos. They're not for everybody but I certainly appreciate them.

    Beautiful scenery over the water. As for public art, it's an acquired taste but I'm glad it's outside for everyone to enjoy or ignore. That's the nature of public art, it doesn't need white walls to exist, it just needs to be out there in the public and becomes part of the landscape. And I admire this work by Rebecca Belmore. The colors resonate well with the background but the message is somewhat lost unless you read the panel. I'm glad it's there though, and thanks for doing this video.

    So many ceramic artists out there but very few are dedicated to form and its relationship to the earth. Many are simply decorative and utilitarian so it's great to see this show where the artist shows reverence for the craft of pottery, the simplicity of form and it's earthly source. It's magical when things are fundamental and basic. Love it !! And Thanks for sharing.

    I like the artist's work but right now there's a lot of female-gendered indigenous artists that are getting their due mainly because of the bipoc movement, a political checkmark when it comes to government grants. Sometimes the art produced isn't that great but this show is beyond indigenous craft and/or identiy. It is a contemporary comment of the state of first nations survivability for the future. Thanks.

      Thanks for your comment. It is appreciated. And you're right, there is a lot of tokenism in the art/academic/institution right now when it comes to BIPOC and post-western-colonial tropes, especially when these same institutions are dependent on public funding. Trickle down effect from the highest levels of gov't but in the long run I think it will reap benefits for those artists who have been ignored or dismissed.

      Thanks for your comment and your continued support of my channel through your insights. I don't think this type of art will fuck you up too much though .. lol ... more a matter of getting used to the idea. I think your idea about art is progressive and I appreciate that. 👍

    these paintings are really amazing ... the trompe l'oeil effect is mesmerizing. if you hadn't pointed out that the works are flat, i would have thought they were textured. wonderful work and thanks for documenting this work.

    thanks for making this video. i think it's important to show this type of work by bipoc artists. it's a way to gain an appreciation of different viewpoints without it being subjected to the white settler gaze as they are often the authors of history. things are definitely changing. nice work !!

    thank you for showing this video. i was particularly interested in your comment about Diego Rivera, the socialists and the working "man" images that Janine uses in her paintings to represent people in the community. this ties in well with the regional comment you also made. those dots connected nicely. please continue to do more of these kinds of videos that are knowledgeable and not "click baity". cheers.

    Interesting and entertaining in a serious and funny way. I kept thinking of the Presence of Absence ... the record of an anal fart or like capturing a photo of a ghostly apparition. I liked it. 🙂

    I like the mix of the real with the fake. Not sure why the necktie work is in the show though, kinda distracting and breaks the cohesion somewhat.

    • @PaulpresentsART
      @PaulpresentsART 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Appreciate your comment. I agree the necktie work is somewhat misplaced but as a framed work of art it's commercially viable and likely easier to sell than the sculptures. Just my opinion. Thanks.

    Seldom see something anthropological in a contemporary art gallery. I like the installation and the significance of each and every facet/object that makes up the "costume" such as the animal furs and bones.

    • @PaulpresentsART
      @PaulpresentsART 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment. I often think that the anthropology and art gallery context is decolonizing by merging their artistic and social sensibilities. It's a much broader topic which right now is politically trendy. We'll see where it goes. Awesome observations btw 🙂

    Pretty esoteric body of work but cohesive. With all this AI and war everywhere in the news, can't really help but confront it. The work is conceptually driven but explores materials in an interesting way I think. I'll be watching 🙂 ... and Thanks as usual for sharing.

    I had to rewatch this video as I saw the "curtain" installation recently and made me think more on the aesthetics of friendship and its collaboration. Most of the time Art needs time to "stew over" until the flavour is just right. Thanks again.

    Hello Paul and thanks....two contacts came to mind when the gallery owner mentioned the work traveling to other places that might provide helpful leads. One is Andrew Edlin in NYC who started Outsider Arts fair (very nice person also) and place in SF caled Creativity Explored which has supported a wide variety of artists in developing their artistic paths.

      Thanks Silvias7090 for your comment on possible venues for the show. The Director Yuri Arajs and I have had chats about this and Andrew Edlin came to mind, as well as other potential venues. I think casting a wide net of possibilities is the best way to find the right fit, especially when considering the audience for the show. Truly appreciate your suggestions. 🙂

    Wow, theres absolutely no gratitude, dehumanizing Caucasians. As if they've never invented or solved or made life and people more able to thrive in the context of reality..... so much rationalizations here. Bordering on propaganda and comedy, take your pick.

      Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it. To me I think it's the times that we are living in where injustices in every form are being picked at ... and let's not forget monetized and weaponized. It's likely a phase and I hope we come out of it better rather than worse.

    I admire the artist's strength and bravery in externalizing her pain through her work in such a tactile way. It can't be easy but I hope it is helping her heal from the trauma. Thanks for sharing this very personal, tragic journey.

    Just happened upon this video when I was looking at your channel's older videos. I saw the video months ago and didn't have much to say but now I'm gaining an appreciation for it, especially the notion of utility regarding pottery and ceramics. These works are sculptures to begin with regardless of what they are made of. Utilitarianism is something we have to get over when it comes to Art. Thanks.

    Thanks for giving descriptions on each of the artists in the show. That's so respectful and together with the texts and pop-ups provided, it gives a fuller picture of artists who are unfamiliar. And I hope that guy at the end of the video gets his sh*t together. Is he homeless?

      Really appreciate your comment, thank you. I'm hoping this type of video would invite a deeper engagement with art as oppose to the click-bait entertainment that is prevalent on TH-cam. As for that guy outside the gallery, I think he's homeless. Gastown is the historic part of Vancouver but also has a homeless problem within the neighbourhood. Such a huge problem these days due to Fentanyl.

    Thanks for making this video. It's nice to see the work of emerging (and unfamiliar) artists being exhibited, giving them a chance at sharing their point of view to the world. And with all new things and perspectives, it requires an investment in time to understand their work. I appreciate how you present their work in an accessible and disarming way through your videos.
