We Went On a Fishing Charter in Kaikoura | Van Life in New Zealand
มุมมอง 1.6Kวันที่ผ่านมา
Taylor and I return to Kaikoura, one of our favorite coastal spots in New Zealand. Right off the bat, we see a MASSIVE pod of dolphins playing in the water. This was the most dolphins we've ever seen all together. We also go on a fishing charter, and get to check crayfish pots (which are, essentially, spiny rock lobsters), and catch a TON of little perch! Taylor even managed to catch a blue cod...

Since we already have done the Hooker Valley Trail and Tasman Glacier (th-cam.com/video/ggO5xMSltxQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MygkZtwTBeEkfY_L), we cruised through those hikes the day we drove into the park. We had a DOC Campsite pass where there were facilities or used the CamperMate app to find freedom sits that also had drop toilets or public restrooms available. If there were no facilities…we just choose another spot to spend the night! We never had any issues finding places to sleep this way, and never had to deal with handling black water :)

    I hiked this in March in 2011 and I still think back on it as one of the most fantastic but also biggest achievements. What time of the year was this? I'm heading back to NZ in October and November, we'd be there at the end of October and I'm wondering if it'll be 'too alpine' for us or not. Oh and credit to you for not just doing this but filming it - and I assume placing the camera, going back etc.! Huge effort but absolutely stunning shots and lovely documentation of your accomplishment. (Edit: haha love the last shots)

      Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it :) We went in October, so that we could park in the unpaid lot, hike to the top, see everything, and hike back rather than taking the one way shuttle! It was a lot more hiking that way but it was so worth it (and we saved a few bucks). I definitely think it depends on the year and the snowfall they get, but I loved the time of year we went! It was crowded but not overwhelmingly so.

    Unfortunately Porta potties no matter if or how fixed to the camper will never comply with the current rules which require the base to be fixed to the vehicle and not be removable to empty human waste. The definition of a removable black waste holding tank also excludes the use of porti Potties, Glad to see you pulled it off, but please don't suggest to others it complies with the regulations as it definitely does not.

    It really nice seeing people getting out and enjoying the wonders of NZ even with the weather being very changeable. Just a note it really is a big no no in protocol to take firewood from the doc or any hut, unless it was for an emergency. Imagine trampers arriving at the hut soaked to the skin only to fine the potential dry wood gone. Protocol is if using wood try to replace if possible and this is only if you are paying and staying in the hut. Welcome to visiting New Zealand but think of others.

      The rules on ventilation are pretty confusing, and we had to do quite a bit of research to figure out we didn't need to add a separate ventilation system. It depends on the type of toilet that you have, but most cassette toilets do not require separate venting systems. When we had the inspection, our windows and a small usb powered-fan were notated in the inspection under ventilation, but overall he did not seem concerned about it :)

    So tell us about this Freedom camp thing. I think it is something I have been saying the US needs to do. If you are fully self contained I think you should be able to buy permit after passing a test to camp on any state or federal lands parking lot for a single night. Camping has gotten way too restrictive and way to expensive in the USA. There are a lot of empty parking lots and this would solve the issue.

    • @EricAndTaylor
      @EricAndTaylor 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Every city and region in New Zealand has their own rules regarding camping, but most places have designated ‘freedom camping sites’ which typically have limited or no facilities (which is why they require you to be fully self contained to stay there). You aren’t able to just ‘camp anywhere’ per say, but there are definitely a good number of options and we’ve never had any problems finding a place to stay for the night! There’s a list of things the van needs in order to pass the inspection and receive the sticker (fixed toilet, trashcan, fresh water, grey water tank, etc). We also have a pass for the Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites. This is a year long pass that allows us to book at almost any of the DOC campsites around New Zealand. This has been super helpful in national parks or more remote areas of the country :)
