      @@makuphd Started learning Japanese a couple weeks ago. I used Tofugu to learn hiragana and katakana quickly. Both within 2 days. I have not yet started on any kanji as I want to ensure I master hiragana and katakana first. I use Duolingo to learn basics and become familiar with basic vocabulary as well as the audio aspect of learning. However, I have found ChatGPT to be the best learning tool so far. I have just started to utilize it as a learning source. I started off asking it to identify the top 15 most frequent verbs that if I mastered will allow me to engage in basic conversations. Chat provided it, then recommended that it is best if it provides 15 most frequent nouns, adverbs and adjectives. After this I asked chat to help me practice what we learned. It would give me a sentence in English and require that I Write the sentence in Japanese. I made an error with particles which caused chat to give me a breakdown of the particles. I was a little overwhelmed so told chat to limit the particles to the most common and those that pair with the words I learned. It boiled it down to 4. Then we practice the sentences over and over until I was familiar with the verbs, nouns, adverbs, adjectives, particles and proper sentence structure. Once I feel confident, I will move on to another set of 15.

      @mmtalii Nice catch ;) No one did before I did. . . but you have to watch the "whole" video to find out that I eventually notice 1:57:53 . . . this happens a lot with my learning process in my live streams. Sometimes it happens the next day, because I perform recall at the beginning and end of the streams by mentally replaying my previous recall through output. Personally, while I welcome and appreciate having others pointing things out, active learning from self-correction with mistakes may also be leverage for better recall. Learning is an active process that involves making mistakes, as well as, practicing "consistency". Not knowing the "correct" thing looks quite different from being consistent, when one take into account natural human error a person may make performing a task for many hours every single day. For myself, this certainly won't be the last time I make an error, regardless of how well I know the material, and I appreciate if or when I or someone else notices. Thanks for noticing :3

    Congrats on your 81th day of Mandarin Duolingo streak dude! I just found your channel on my timeline. I’m really curious, has Duolingo noticeably improved your Mandarin? and how much do you think it's really helping you reach fluency? Cheers!

    • @makuphd
      @makuphd หลายเดือนก่อน

      @nicksennn Thanks for the kind words. Short answer: Well, I was illiterate in Mandarin and Japanese at the time I started, and now I am not. I would qualify that as a "noticeable" improvement. In terms of fluency, Duolingo has and currently contributed "sufficiently". Longer answer: On the topic of fluency, I would have to qualify what I consider as fluency, for this term has debatably been arbitrarily overused and often wildly inconsistently defined from person to person. From my perspective, my "bottom line" tends to come from the perspective of learning and problem solving. Fluency is the relative extent of integration and use of the target languages with the person's existing lifestyle, creative process, and critical thinking. Yes, this includes mixing and matching activities using the target languages, as well as, acquired languages. With that said, the use of Duolingo offers consistent sufficient exposure to both Japanese and Mandarin vocabulary and implicit grammar that inspires and encourages me to consistent think and use my target languages in my established daily activities. As a disclaimer, I grew up and continue to maintain a lifestyle involving the use of multiple languages prior to starting my language learning journey. When concerning specifically Duolingo, it has greatly increased my engagement with the target languages, which I would qualify as "increasing fluency". The vast majority of my life now involves the interaction of the current languages I know regardless of their "relative proficiency". For example, I may start sentences and thoughts in one language and may choose naturally to assist completing the ideas comfortably with another. Most of my prospective projects and conversations I have when streaming often involves some active engagement of the target languages. Furthermore, I want to clarify that "fluency" in my opinion is not measured by any "one aspect of the target language", which is a fairly common narrow focus for the vast majority of people I have had the pleasure to meet so far. For example, fluency may be defined by one's relative ability to be "conversational" in speech. Since Duolingo consistently increases my engagement in the target languages during and after streams, I am comfortable in suggesting that Duolingo "sufficiently" contributes to "my fluency". I like to iterate that I "do not " largely concerns myself with relative perceived "proficiency" of a target language, and, alternatively, focus predominately on consistently encouraging myself and, potentially others, to actively try to find creative ways to make the target language a progressively consistent part of one's daily routines. I like to believe that when one is actively able to fully integrate the use of the target language in their everyday activities, one will likely naturally achieve satisfactory levels of proficiency downstream. Hopefully there is some answers in the above thoughts. Thank you again for your interest and questions. Best wishes to your pursuits. :3

    I am a little confused here. Are you learning Chinese or teaching Chinese? You're able to hand write many characters and your twitch background says you are Chinese American.

    • @mmtalii
      @mmtalii หลายเดือนก่อน

      I did check your first Chinese video and you said you are more comfortable with Cantonese so I assume you were able to read and write 汉字 before you started learning mandarin. It's very interesting to see how other Chinese dialect speakers learn mandarin as a complete foreigner to Chinese languages and culture.

    • @makuphd
      @makuphd หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mmtalii I am learning Chinese. Presently, hand writing is a form of output I used, especially, for my "recall" practice prior to my study sessions. These sessions are intentionally performed at the beginning of each study session as part of my own approach to measuring and, perhaps, "teaching by demonstrations" different approaches to my learning process overtime. I am an "American Born Chinese", who "generally" would likely have a background exposure to Mandarin through immersion from early childhood to adulthood. Like myself, second generation of diaspora from other countries, which include China, often are "intentionally" encouraged to focus on English as the common language. Consequently, while I may have some level of phonological awareness, I am completely iliterate prior to beginning my studies in these videos. I am happy to say I can read and understand what you mean by 汉字 at this point in my studies. :3 Also noteworthy, my parents are Fuzhounese, and we largely speak Fuzhounese in our household. Fuzhouness is one of many "dialects" of Mandarin. While being related, they are almost entirely unintelligible to each other. Fuzhounese does not have any formal schooling for writing and reading outside China and is largely preserved and acquired orally through immersion even in China. The dialect is often considered fairly rare and on the decline in China. Hopefully that clarifies a few things. I really appreciate your questions and interests. One of many goals from sharing my experiences is to leverage my background in academia (I have a doctorate in Biology) to tackling the learning process involved in skill acquisition and maintenance through engaging in relatable activities, which presently involves video games and language learning. Are you interested in learning Mandarin or have acquired Mandarin already? I would love to hear about your interests involving the learning process. Best of luck with everything. :3

    Hi! Do you actually know if the is a game like this but for Mandarin? Good video

    • @makuphd
      @makuphd หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Charlybr I want to preface that I am largely a Steam user. While I am currently at the beginning stage where I actively looked for games that use Chinese as the target language, I did not come across "edutainment" games that are sufficiently similar to Shashingo. However, I do know there is a game in early access called "Noun Town" that appears to fully support many languages, which includes simplified Chinese. I think the dev has focused on a more modular design to accommodate multiple languages into the game design. I like to echo a sentiment that various devs mention when regarding implementing multiple languages. Often times with "games" with multiple languages, there is a reasonable and likely chance the overall content of the game may diminished due to development resources divided among multiple languages, as well as, potential inconsistency between languages. "Edutainment" games are relatively niche and often are passion projects lead by small indie groups, in the case of Shashingo, largely one person. With that in mind, "Noun Town" is presently the closest thing I have notice. Wish you the best on your language learning journey :3

    nice man, but wtf with the slay the spire clones. I know, you love deck builders, you love rogue likes, but for Lord's sake, find another way to implement deck building aspects and rogue-gaming!!!!! Enough with shields, action points, implement other costs, different resources, varied cards. Bash your brain to find something new!

    • @makuphd
      @makuphd หลายเดือนก่อน

      @manolios Neat. . . For the record, I typically include an "initial intro" on the "Day 1" video of each content creation project that attempts to briefly contextualize my interests with the present game. I like to calmly emphasize that "people" make and play games, and people have varying interests that goes well beyond the scope of what you may specifically value, which appears to be heavily confined to the the "foundational" elements of deckbuilding. Perhaps, investing a bit of time into understanding relevant people may deepen your appreciation and alleviate some of your open frustration with "the lack of paradigm shifting designs in deckbuilding". Otherwise, if you are simply interested in yourself, reducing a stranger like me to something like "I know you love deckbuilders", and the dev's work to "wtf with the Slay the Spire clones" (also a debatable point), that is certainly your prerogative. Well, I hope you find someone and something "new enough" that interests you. . . Also, if you happen to be competent enough to demonstrate your understanding about deckbuilding design by perhaps developing a novel concept yourself, or come across such an "innovative" deckbuilder, I would love to hear about it. Good luck bashing your brain :3

    Hey. I really want to get into learning asian languages, mainly mandarin. Has duolingo helped you out? And what is your method to doing this? I really want to start but I don't know where to start.

    • @makuphd
      @makuphd หลายเดือนก่อน

      @memes.clips.mp4 The short answer is yes. At the time of this video, Duolingo serves exclusively as my initial exposure for pinyin and Hanzi for simple sentences and vocabulary. However, my approach to reinforcing what Duolingo introduces are complimented by various additional forms of engagement and practice that was, is, and will be incorporated as I continue my studies. At the moment this includes using additional sources for grammar (Chinese Grammar Wiki), pronunciation (Yoyo Chinese), and constructing personal context based writing practice. I do want to emphasize also that a significant amount of time is dedicated to interacting with other language learners. In my opinion, Duolingo may serve as a reasonable place to begin exploring Mandarin without any upfront cost. A "spaced repetition system", SRS, is often a popular starting point for people interested in language learning. In addition to Duolingo, there are many other competing SRS apps with varying approaches to language exposure that are free, or offer trial periods. I would encourage interested people to initially explore hands-on for at least one form of SRS that consistently engages the learners. In addition to SRS, "graded readers" apps like DuChinese and Mandarin Companion, are another popular form of additional input. Combined with a preferred grammar source, one will likely learn enough to eventually engage in any form of preferred forms of immersion, like vlogs, podcasts, movies, etc. Hope that helps. Best wishes on your language learning journey.

      @HumanRV I cannot read Russian. However, I tried using Google translate. Sorry in advance, if my response may be a bit weird. The comment about "it is strange to see an Asian person learning Chinese, since usually they learn the language as they grow up" is pretty stereotypical to me as well. There are a lot of Asian languages, and Chinese has many dialects as well. I want to share that I may look "Asian" but I am not native Asian. Also, I am learning Chinese right now, because I speak a different dialect at home and use English as a common language. Thank you for the interests. Good luck with your language learning. I hope one day we will be able to use Chinese to talk to each other :3

    Greetings Maku :3 Do you suppliment your language learning with other sources off stream? if so, what do you do? also, what percentage of your knowledge on a language do you think you could attribute to duolingo (including the post-session review of the content you learned) Thank you!

    • @makuphd
      @makuphd 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @vaukest5888 For the first question, the short answer is yes. What I do is ever changing as resources are introduced, refined, or discarded following roughly a 25 day period retrospective evaluation and considerations from any peers through live interactions. Resources are often introduced in intervals established from these prior experiences. At the time of this video, Chinese incorporates the use of the Chinese Grammar wiki and cross references for word discovery and curiosity with the MDBG Chinese Dictionary. As a side note, I do engage in regular immersion with watching shows in the target language. For example, I am currently watching the Chinese 3 Boby Problem. For further clarity, this type of immersive activity in Chinese and also Japanese is already a lifestyle choice prior to engaging in self-study. To further elaborate, I have more experience with Japanese self-study at the moment. In addition to Jisho.org and a grammar source like Tofugu, Japanese language learning incorporates additional resources, like graded readers (Tadoku), comprehensible input vlogs, and, more recently, educational video games (Shashingo). Future resources may include the use of LLMs and story game narration and dialogue reading and interpretation. When concerning percentage attribution of knowledge to Duolingo or anything else for that matter, I find that rather difficult to measure as this often creates a conflict of interests regarding my perspective on the learning process. For the sake of brevity, I tend to focus on finding creative approaches to integrate the knowledge from each resources together to the best of my ability. Consequently, knowledge from Duolingo, as well as, other resources are often intimately associated, as opposed to, mutually exclusive. Without one or the other, my current knowledge would not exist in its current state. With that said, one may suggest that the majority of my knowledge on the language is attributed to Duolingo as the vast majority of my existing time with the target language either is inspired using Duolingo or is used in the context of Duolingo. However, I want to reiterate that what I learn in Duolingo contributes to knowledge acquisition elsewhere and vice versa, which I would consider as a collective pool of knowledge. In my opinion, one of the generalize goal standard regarding a potential "lifelong skill" is prioritizing forming habits and pooling the collective habits into an appropriate sustainable lifestyle. Thank you for the wonderful questions. Best wishes on your pursuits :3
