SAPS, BLACKJACKS AND SLUNGSHOTS: A HISTORY OF FORGOTTEN WEAPONS, THE BOOK tells the story of the most forgotten weapons from history for the first time in history.
2018 Independent Author Network Awards... Finalist Non-Fiction, History. Amazon #1 New Release in 3 categories.
Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Al Capone, William Shakespeare, Jules Verne, Hank Williams and Frank Sinatra are just some of the notable people that are encountered in this wide ranging and previously undiscovered tale. The book was exhaustively researched and is, I am told, quite entertaining.

Reading Bob Dylan’s favorite Victorian horror novel for clues about his writing #bobdylan #horror

Bob Dylan tweets! He's made some noise by staring to post on Twitter, especially by name-dropping The Great God Pan, an old horror novel, that it turns out Stephen King and H.P. Lovecraft were also fans of.

Sandbag Murder in an Agatha Christie Novel
What are the measurements and weight of this sap?
Interesting.
Three people were gunned down on that fateful day JFK, his head shot shooter D J Tippet and the patsy Lee Harvey Oswald. A complete mop up and case closed and served up to the American people.
Looks like a spear head rather than a knife.
True
Non ha alcun senso avere un piccolo sfollagente con un laccio così lungo
I may have to make some sort of slungshot reassembling this.... 2 sap heads on a length of chain
There was an old episode of Cops where a female deputy used a sap on a guy in bar and he went DOWN..
I’d like to see that clip! Will have to look for it.
There’s actually a junji ito adaptation of osamu dazai’s no longer human too! I’ve read it and I would definitely recommend it!
I just looked it up… will have to read it sometime
There ABSOLUTELY WAS A SHOOTER BEHIND THE GRASSY KNOLL. TRUST ME.
The reason why we have so much information about this case is that the perpetrators tried to do too much with the assassination. Instead of simply setting up an ordinary person, with a mundane background, to take the fall, they chose somebody who had been part of the CIA molehunt in Moscow in 1959 (cf. the books of John M. Newman) - and manipulated LHO (New Orleans and the Mexico City fraud) to make it look as if the Cubans and Soviets might be involved. This was not to cause an actual war, but to make official investigators (Earl Warren, Richard Russell, etc., or anyone else who might be called upon to serve) fear that the Reds might be blamed and that a war might take place as a result. That is also why you HAD to have some evidence of shots from the front, as opposed to just Oswald's Pinko posturing, to scare the hell out of any investigators. It is possible that they had considered multiple patsies - look what happened to Frazier and Molina. It might also be prudent to consider the fact that the assassination had to be successful, and that had to include snipers in front, fairly close-up but camouflaged, and with some sort of fail-safe option. This was not Northern Ireland during the Troubles, where a sniper might kill a soldier or policeman with one shot but be indifferent if he missed or the victim was merely injured. This had to succeed. If JFK had survived they would all have been royally fcuked, and ended up like the conspirators in the Lincoln assassination - badly - and the military hawks would have been done, for at least a generation.
Amazing with this and The Beatles Revolution, and The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again, how much backlash these songwriters had to the excesses of the "movement".
Nice thanks for sharing.
Welcome. Appreciate you watching.
I’d work out a holder to put in. Give me a mace over a flail any day. Not that I know shit about it all, but I do like the old fashioned mace.
I saw Oswald fire all three shots , but don't tell anyone.
Wooden weapon enjoyers rise up
✊🏼
Wow! you couldn’t even see the striking stick itself in the camera, cutting through the ice
Can’t remember if I mentioned this in the video but keep in mind I’m 51 years old… few months shy of that at the time of the video. So that’s the acceleration I can get out of a pair of chucks; imagine anyone in their prime that knows how to use it correctly.
Very cool artifact. I recently purchased an ikakalaka (the sword with the best name?), so I've been reading a bit about Congo. Fascinating part of the world.
That’s really cool. Kind of how I got so interested in antique weapons too… How it spurs you to learn about that part of the world.
@@ObjectHistory That's definitely one of the major strengths of your work, both here on TH-cam and in your books! E.g., Reading your work on saps, blackjacks, slungshots, etc. didn't just teach me about the weapons themselves, but also provided a lot of insights into the social history of the eras in which those weapons were most popular. I felt like you used the "object history" of the weapons as a jumping off point to explore all kinds of rarely discussed aspects of historical criminality, policing, the media, and other topics. I think it's that approach that elevates good material/object history like yours from being just a cool hobby or intriguing trivia to something of universal historical value that teaches us about the human condition.
I have the Black one, I've had it about 3 years now. I love it. It's an updated, modernized version of Trench clubs used in WW1. I hope I never have to use mine, definitely would NOT want to be on the receiving end of it.
I bet it looks cool in black.
@@ObjectHistory Yup. I paid $130.00 for mine.
I have that, the black one. I love it. I haven't had to use it and I hope I don't have to. I definitely would not want to be on the receiving end of that.
Great video man keep it up!! Can't wait to see what you do for the next one.
Thank you very much. I'm reading up on Maggie's Farm now.
Reminds me of the axes in early indoeuropean societies. They were bronze axes but were currency and only currency from what we can tell.
Interesting.
I made one of those out of pure thin writing paper before. Very durable
I love decorative and symbolic weapons, its amazing how they were used as status symbols through so many cultures around the world.
Well said. I'm a huge symbolism nerd, weapons aside as well.
But when you knew., as a policeman, you were walking into a bar fight. Putting them on ahead of time gave you a real edge to settle things down.
I can (only) imagine. And they can't get knocked out of your hand, etc. And they're a surprise to boot, unlike knucks or whatever. Lot of upside.
Sometimes the algorithm gives me a gift! great video. Cool channel.
Thanks for that!
brass wrapping
Ah, thanks
Something of which was built like that knife could have probably still in theory been used as a functional weapon however I don't think that anybody would actually really want to be using anything which was this fat and gawky combined with being that short in an actual fight and it would kind of defeat the purpose of why many people carried daggers and if you were going to carry anything of those proportions then you might as well just choose pretty much any other types of historical knife or dagger or even a short sword instead. The problem with it as a weapon in my opinion is not so much that it would be useless or barely capable of functioning as a weapon but more so that the fatness and the gawkyness would just simply create a certain level of pain in the butt which is not necessary beneficial or needed.
Well said- Agreed.
It definitely seems like weird fantasy looking weapons which were not were not meant to necessarily be used for actual fighting was certainly 110% a thing long before the idea of fantasy weapons actually became a thing in the modern age.
Hoe of the Spirits HAHAAHAAAAAA!
I can honestly say that did not occur to me LOL
Now that is a very interesting piece!!

Ha, I like that (you running into him here). Santee's the most, translation- only, successful TH-camr that watches my videos LOL
Yes it would make a great Spaceship 🙂
Nice story.
I have one and know a little of the history of how it came to my family. An uncle in the Navy traded a can of peaches for the knife from a Marine just coming out of the jungle in the South Pacific. This is the story that has been passed down.
Wow. That is really neat.
Tracking down Dylan's sources is fun, but things often reveal themselves by accident. Was reading Susan Sontag's review of "Under the Glacier" - novel published in 1968 - and came across this line: "Ua has been Pastor Jon's wife (although she is a Roman Catholic), the madam of a brothel in Buenos Aires..." I guess he might have read it while "still waiting at the altar!"
Neat. And so true, we'll probably never know half of his references.
You try wiping your rear with those claws. It is painful and awkward.
Winning comment for this video
Where can I sell mine? My great uncle was a cop and had it in his truck.
Well you'd get the best price (theoretically) by selling it directly to an interested buyer. Because if you sell to a reseller like a pawn shop or antiques dealer, gun store that sells antique firearms, etc.- they're going to want to give you like 1/4 of what they'll sell it for. If you have an auction house do it then there's no telling what you'll get assuming it sells. The direct route is a pain of course which is why resellers exist though.
Bob's making a statement about how absurd X is.
In part, I'm sure
What's absurd about it?
There is lots of "under the radar" horror and weird fiction, but if anyone has read HP Lovecraft's writings on what influenced him, they will know Arthur Machen. Best writers of old are: M R James, Algernon Blackwood, Hans Heinz Ewers (The Spider), E F Benson, Robert Aickman (50s/60s), and the far superior contemporary of Stephen King being Ramsay Campbell.
I'm taking notes on some of those names. Thanks.
The Machen novel (novella) was published by many publishers, including Oxford. Not sure why Dylan would want to congratulate that press. Blowing smoke, probably. Made you/us look.
Absolutely

Nice coverage of the Gonzalez. A few points of interest perhaps. Most city and county law enforcement uniforms had a deep sap pocket on the right leg for your sap. The beauty of the Gonzalez is that it seldom broke the skin so you avoided bloody scalp cuts and trips to emergency wards before booking. Most of the other saps created bloody messes with their sharp edges. In a scuffle you typically don’t have the opportunity for a precise strike. Bloody scalp wounds suggested the use of excessive force when you visited the emergency room and small town reporters loved getting pictures to promote their point of view.I purchased mine in the mid 60’s . Our court officer knew Robert and secured it for me. We used to joke that you needed to make a good strike on the first swing because it was hard on your arm shoulder and wrist if you missed, and the momentum of the sap could put you out of position for a second strike. Thanks for your research and book.
That's amazing intel, thanks! I wondered about a miss (hand to God) because they are so beefy but have never heard anyone mention that. It's also hard to imagine that beast not feeling odd in the sap pocket but I guess you just got used to it. Mr. Gonzales's intent was partly to eliminate or reduce the bleeding he saw on the beat so I guess he did a good job with the design. Thanks again.
Bob Dylan has good taste. 'The Great God Pan' is a great story. I think I'll read it again.
Dylan has always been one of my fave musicians of all time and I was really tickled when he was awarded the Nobel but probably won’t read this book⚛❤
Me too (first half)! I still remember when they announced it.
Is was all true. Even the lies?? Especially the lies! - Garak
The Mere is a version of an ancient Egyptian weapon ...again, something adapter from the true tangata whenua , of non Polynesian origins
Beautiful dagger, very expensive as well, pure art!!
So he probably didn’t get there within the timeline he is accused of? None of the eye witnesses mentioned anything about the shooter being out of breath and that is what he would have been according to your Reenactment. Good job.
Yes
What is under the Turtle, its been said its Turtles all the way down. YET Imagine you're Mark Walberg and say, "Turtle, Toroidal,...Turtles, Toroidals." Toroidal energy surrounding Earth like a donut, 3d shape is a toroid, 5d shape super-toroid is like including the ball of Earth and Toroidal surrounding energy into a transformative part of something bigger yet to be known.
Have you played around with rope darts/meteor hammer? i practiced similiar forms with two monkey fist knots on the ends of a rope. Timing and inertia are different but the basic movement pattern stay the same
Surprisingly no. I really need to get one. I'm not interested in the non-martial gymnastics techniques that dominate those nowadays of course. But they look fascinating.
