I run a small nepenthes nursery out of sydney Australia. This is a channel to share some amazing plants and how I grow my nepenthes. I'll be adding more videos as I have time, including greenhouse tours, how to guides and some more focused on single species or particular plants.
I'll repeat it in my of my videos but the tips and techniques I share on here are what works for me in my conditions, everyone's grow space will have their own differences meaning different things will work better for different people.
Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or anything you'd like to see in my videos.
There's a link below to the rest of my social media if you want to see more or purchase plants. For the moment I am only selling in Australia but we will see if things change in the future.

So so so so cool I love carnivorous plants
I’m using a shop light from harbor freight to grow my nepenthes. 4 feet long, 5500 lumens, 4000 kelvin. I’ve been growing my 1 Veitchii x lowii x Mira, 2 St. Gays, for a year 2 months now. Good results, coloration, couple basal growths, leaf jumps. Wondering how many inches should I hang my light over my plants? 15, 20 inches? Been using Maxsea, 270 PPM, 5mls or so in each pitcher twice a month, is that a good amount and frequency?
how much do you dilute the hydrogen peroxide 3% for ya seedlings? great video!
So awesome you can grow these outside. I suppose I could grow them outside if I lived in Florida or California
Amazing video! Greetings from Brazil
Super video ! Do you spray hydrogen peroxyde 3% directly on top of the seedling ? like a little bit or a large amount to get ride of the algae ans stuff ?
Just spray it abit every few days and then use water to flush the residue away
G-day! Greetings from france!
That’s such a beautiful aristolocioides
Thanks, one of them is flowering again now
can clipeata also be grown in intermediate conditions alongside nepenthes veitchii bariohighland?
on a windowsill
Yeah I would say it definitely could, it doesn't seem like the most demanding plant and like similar conditions to veitchii
@@Eat-Me-Exotics ok thanks for the answer
Too easy, good luck with them hope they can do well for you.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics Thanks
Is it a wine freezer
Haha it's a cafe drinks fridge but a wine fridge would work too
Hey Oli, any chance you can ship seeds to NZ? Ever since i moved here from perth its taken me years to find any nepenthes for sale haha good video man :)
I probably could, but haven't hand much available for a while. The seeds I produced over winter weren't great so we will see what the warmer months bring. I've had alot of messages from over there chancing plants, maybe one day I'll look into trying to set up exports for you guys.
Thanks for the GH tour, everything looks great especially for the end of winter!! Do you have to heat the GH much in the winter and what are you typical temps inside the GH for these cold months? Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes I heat the GH all winter, the thermostat is set to 28°c days and 18°c nights but it's be such a cold wet winter that it's more like 22-24°c days and 15°c nights. Next winter I want to upgrade my heating cos the seedling growth rates took a real hit this winter.
Very nice, I will be ordering some time late this year or early next year
Should be good timing, I'm hoping to have alot of my new hybrids available towards the end of the year.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics by any chance do you think you will one day stock edwardsiana ? Because I can’t find it any were
@Aussieaussieoyoy one day yes, not anytime soon unfortunately. They are very hard to come by still in Australia. I make all my plants via seed or cuttings (rather than importing) so it's going to take time for me to get my edwardsianas big enough to flower or cut. But I will have some edwardsiana hybrids available late next year.
Finally
🤣
looking great Oliver ,thanks for the tour ,hope your feeling better soon:)
Cheers mate. I'm sure I'll kick it soon.
Next time you decide to do a video wait till it stops raining.
Unfortunately that's hard lately, it's raining more then it isn't and working around full time work I film when I can.
Can I use regular display fridge to keep the plants without replacing their thermostat please? The default temperature is under 10 degree C (50 degree F) according to manufacturer, but I don't know if that's the recommended temp for normal usage or if we can turn up to grow plants🤔
I've got my fridge set at 10°c but it's plugged into the external thermostat so I can have different temps for day and night
What breeds would you recommend for Bundaberg area in QLD?
Your in a great spot up there, any lowland species/hybrid would go perfectly outside. Lots of intermediate options too. Look for stuff with maxima, veitchii, truncata, ventricosa, ampullaria or rafflesiana in the mix. I think the only option I have at the moment that would suit well is maxima dark x veitchii, is fast growing and super easy with huge pitchers once it gets going
@Eat-Me-Exotics I bought 2 ventricosa and 2 maxima from Victoria, both ventricosa died within 3 weeks. Both maxima are still growing slowly. One is x rbv the other is x lbv. How much is your maxima dark including postage?
Thats a shame, usually ventricosa are very tough growing. There's a link below to my maxima x veitchii, I've sent this cross up your way before and I know they are going strong, one customer even had it in flower recently. www.eatmeexotics.com.au/shop/p/nepenthes-maxima-dark-x-veitchii-bario-striped
@Eat-Me-Exotics hi, just checking to see if the nepenthes has been sent yet
@alanbentham2836 not yet its on the table to be packed tonight and dropped at the post office tomorrow when I can finish work early. Just saves them getting stuck in the postal system over the weekend. You should have it wednesday/Thursday.
Growing Nepenthes outside sounds like a supernatural dream to me What cross did you do with the N. truncata?
Hahaha I am so lucky where I live to be able to do it. The amount of greenhouses id need would be out of control these days 🤣. Oh this year was a good list, though not amazing seed sets from most but there was edwardsiana, trusmadinesis, veitchii M, lowii x jacquilineae, platychila, peltata x platychila and a few others. We will see how they go in the next month hopefully I get good germination rates.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics You rocks mate :)
Cheers mate. Can't wait to start seeing big mature pitchers of my breeding in everyone's collections
Finally
Hahaha yeah sorry, been being sick, flat out and planning a wedding it's been hard to find the time lol.
This is extreamly useful for a uni assignment i'm doing right now, thanks for making this video your a life saver!!
@@Lilly_At that's awesome, I'm so glad I could help. If you have other questions I'd be more then happy to try answer them for you.
Thanks for the info. N. rajah is definitively a challenging plant. I saved mine by avoid spahgnum moss and going 100% perlite (because I can't find Akadama nor Kanuma).
Awesome, yeah it's not the easiest plant also as it gets bigger and older it really needs those cold nights below 10°c to keep it happy.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics So I really need to sell it when it's still small.
Mind blowing plants 😍 How do you manage temperature, humidity and pests outside?!
The only one I can manage is pest which I spray for as needed if anything comes up, but the rest it's just what ever the outdoor conditions are. Humidity is usually 60%+ which helps but they see temps ranging from 5°c upto 45°c
What are those pots?
I think I got them from sage horticultural, I'm really liking them so far.
Nice video. Yes those tags. I started writing it on the pot and took all tags off. Subbed.
I with random repot stuff and reuse pots so tags are easier for me. I also buy pots in bulk sometimes 500 at a time
is your marshydro is dimmed to minimum??? cuz i have cheap led pannel something com 225 and my plants are way further from the led than yours and mine have the max light they can take before they burn, i tought marshydro were way stronger, if its not dimmed, that would mean they are less strong and will need to take that into account when i buy one...
I run them between 10 and 25% in the fridge, multiple things come into play though when pushing plants with high light levels and you need to have everything balanced. Higher light needs higher humidity which means you need better airflow also you need to have a good fertiliser routine as the plants need the food to convert the light into strong growth. If you bring one up with out the other you can start having issues.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics they are pushed to the max, lol!!! got about 175-200 ppfd of light, plants are red, 93% humidity, praying mantis, 2 kind of flyghtless fruitfly, crickets colonie, alot of moth i catch and plenty of other insects that live free in my grow tent plus i sometime drop osmocot in my nepenthes... thanks for the response, i tought about maybe buy some marshydro when my yescom will die, but not sure anymore if im not using them at full capacity, it seem like a waist of money...
I love them personally, plus being dimmable if I move them to another space I can just turn them up or down accordingly.
I know my math is terrible but the mix you’ve given: 25% coco peat 25% orchid bark 25% perlite Only adds up to 75%. Did I miss something?
Nope your maths works out perfectly, mine did not 🤣🤣🤣. It was ment to be 50% perlite lol. BTW it's coco chips not orchid bark, orchid bark breaks down alot faster then coco chips and doesn't hold as much water.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics thanks for that. I’ll definitely try it.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics I hate to be more annoying but where do you get your coco chips?
@everfreebrumby8385 never annoying, I started this channel to help people. I'm in Australia and I order my chips from enfield pet and garden supplies. Good prices and they can supply large amounts as well as bulk perlite as well.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics I’m actually living in Engadine in the Sutherland Shire not far from you. Thanks again.
what a system! but how about the ventilation?
Quite often I'll leave the door open abit and I make sure to open it up for at least 10 minutes a day. It's not ideal but it's what I can do. Best option would probably be installing a small inlet and outlet fan.
Great video! You have lots of beautiful Nepenthes. Do you have Platychila x Robcantleyi?
Thanks mate, I don't have one and unfortunately that's was one of the crosses on the likely failed platychila flower spike, good news is I have more Robcantleyi pollen in the fridge and more flowers about to start opening.
The Sunday lesson ... don't chase happiness to much... usually you are already happy if you look at the right things (female platychila ;-) ) But love to see the difference much more detail between EP and BE plants..
Hahaha, true but even though I already had the female I still needed some more for breeding stock. So win win lol
Great Video
Thanks mate
👏❤
How often do you water to keep the living sphagnum looking so good?
I spray the moss as it gets alittle dry, but I only water properly every couple of weeks. But the fridge is kept at 90% humidity which keeps the moss very happy.
@@Eat-Me-Exotics thanks for that.
Do you think robcantleyi can tolerate Summer Nights of 22 degrees?
Robcantleyi or rajah? Robcantleyi might handle it for a couple of months with out too much issue. Rajah it's way too warm for.
Excellent!
Great vid Oli, awesome to see your grow fridge. Nailed the pronunciation of Ephipiata ;)
Cheers mate. Hahaha I had to get it right eventually 😂
Cute little VFTs
Can I use high tds water(water of our tubewell in Bangladesh and it's approximately 700feet deep, tds is 500 ppm+)?If can't then what is the maximum tds water which can be used?(Sorry for bad English 🥲)
500ppm would definitely be too high, sphagnum moss needs very clean water I would go above 50ppm
Great work and great insight!! Your plants are looking great!!!
Thanks mate.
I live in fl and would love to have mine outside! How much sunlight do these bad boys/girls get??
I think they get between 3 to 5 hours direct sun through out the day
@Eat-Me-Exotics I appreciate your response!
You have lots of amazing looking Nepenthes! So beautiful! Wishing a good post surgery recovery 💯
Cheers mate, everything went well. 4 week post surgery today and back at work on the building site.
Hey, do you sell nepethes rajah? I can pay your ship please
🦉🌱✨
How do you keep them, they like dormancy. here in "Middle" Europe it's easy. We've got winter ;-)
Hahaha I'll admit they don't get as good a dormancy here as colder countries. But I'll accept that cos the trade off is I can grow nepenthes outside all year round lol
@@Eat-Me-Exotics Those last few words really "hurts" me 🤣. But here next to "natural dormancy" we've got a lot of "slugs"... they could eat allo of my outdoor carnivor plants.
Hey Nice tour! As always, your plants look fantastic! I hope you will recover well.
Cheers mate. Definitely on the mend now, probably about time to shoot some more videos
@@Eat-Me-Exotics Try to get some rest too, right? 😉
@WindowsillNepenthes hahaha I've done the rest part, now I'm upto the part where I'm back in the gym every other day working on getting my leg strength and stability back. Should be back to work (im a carpenter) this week so interested to see how that goes.
Hey. If the cups dry out and fall off will they grow back?
Nope unfortunately each leaf only gets 1 pitcher but every new leaf can grow a pitcher as the plant grows.
i would love to know where you get your plants. im in brisbane and there are hardly any places that stock pitcher plants and the ones that they do sell are almost always close to being dead or they are all the same with no variety
Hey mate alot of my plants come from exotica plants but they only release once or twise a year and sell out fast. Otherwise online is your best bet. Pitcher n moss and old world botanicals are both fantastic suppliers. I will be updating my website with new stock late next month as well, feel free to follow me on Facebook and/or instagram I usually try and announce releases about a week before they go up so everyone gets a good chance to get in before they sell out.
What’s a good parts per million for using Maxsea ?
I haven't tried maxsea my self as we can't get it here in Australia but I'd probably aim for around 100ppm to start and you could slowly bump it up from there, I wouldn't go much above 200ppm though.
How often do you water your plants? Do you completely saturate the media let it dry out and then water like a week later? And are you careful not to get water into the pitchers so you don’t dilute the digestive fluid?
I don't follow a set schedule as it depends on the weather as well as some plants dry out their pots faster then others, I give them a really good soak when I water and then let them almost dry out before watering again. I try and avoid filling the pitchers with water but it's not always possible.
Nice videos ! What lightning do you use ??
Cheers mate. In the fridge I've got 3 mars hydro ts1000s, great lights and being dimmable I can set them to the light levels I want to use.
