Frank Reed - Legendary CCM Radio Personality on 1 DEGREE OF ANDY

One of the keys to success for any artist is getting your single on the radio on the biggest stations in the country. Not only did my guest Frank Reed play 4HIM’s songs on KLTY in Dallas, but he also became a lifelong friend. But Frank’s story goes way beyond the boundaries of Christian music. He’s a legend in the radio industry and I know you’re going to love his story!

I’m in the presence of CCM royalty on today’s podcast because I’m sitting down with Jim Murray, one of the original members of the Imperials. To hear first hand stories about performing with Elvis and creating possibly the greatest group in Christian music history blows my mind! We also dive into the stories of some of those classic Imperials albums and - MAN! - I’m still geeking out!
Steve Wiggins of Big Tent Revival on 1 DEGREE OF ANDY

Big Tent Revival is one of my favorite 90s CCM bands. Their unique blend of pop, rock and folk with a Memphis twist gave us classic songs like "Two Sets of Jones" and "Choose Life". Their music left a lasting impression on those of us who listened to Christian radio in that era and their frontman Steve Wiggins is my guest on this episode. Get ready for 90 minutes of pure gold!

I attended a John Michael Talbot concert in the early 80's, in New York. John Michael Talbot was on a stage wearing his monk outfit. Before the concert, I didn't know who he was or what we were in store for. His played his guitar and simply sang; his music was very peaceful. I was 16 or 17 years old at the time of his concert, 60 years old today.

I think I saw Twyla sing at a church in Worthington, OH back in 1984 or 1985. Her music was excellent. I had never heard of her, but was aware of her after that concert. In the coming years, I bought her music at Christian book stores.

I met you all when you came to El Paso, Texas at Abundant Living Faith Center. I gave you all a big hug. I cherish those times. Your music got me through a lot of trials I had gone through: being hit by a car walking across the street, cancer in my shoulder, and mental illness. Your music always comforted me. Thank you for being you and for being on TH-cam. I've been wanting to contact you all for the longest time just to thank you. Tell Mark, Marty, and Kirk I said 'hello!'😊

Saw Mike at Cornerstone in the 1990s. I had no idea at the time that he was doing both lead vocals and lead guitar. Very talented individual. I saw him play another time with Phil Keaggy. I don't remember what year, sorry. Amazing talent! Edit: I was in high school at the cornerstone show, so it must have been 1992.

I love this! I promoted Christian concerts in the 90's and did two Denver concerts with 4 Him and one with 1st Call. We even met them after another concert they did in Denver and took the three of them out to dinner aterwards! What I saw in the 90's was that these "contemporary" Christian artists brought a life to the "church" that was missing in so many churches. The music was new, the energy in the concerts, this was all so new to "church." And because of it, so many churches began moving into a different style of worship and churches had more "life!"

Andy, you probably don't remember but we did one concert in Denver with 4Him and Point of Grace. Then later we did two concerts with 4Him and Jackie Velasquez in Colorado Springs and Denver. Our promotion ministry was called Sonlight Ministries.

I went to a concert in Texas while I was in seminary back in the late 90d and 4Him was one of the bands that played. They were amazing! After the show, Andy and the a couple other guys were standing out where the fans were by the merch tables. I wanted so bad to say hello, but I didn’t have the nerve. I regret that moment because if I could relive it I would tell him how much his music meant to me and how much I appreciated him and the group. I love you guys and your music has helped me through so many difficult moments.

For my my teen years I was Presbyterian. That might explain why Ferns music feels like coming home 🏡, in the best of ways. That grounding & community. This podcast in full would be nice in the long form here, but understand why it’s in full over on Spotify already, he can be more himself when not on cam, I get that. I forgot I had it cued up over there, listened to the intro & hopped over here to see if I could watch it instead. It’s going to be a good one for sure. Nice job on the pod Andy.

What a remarkable podcast. Gary Chapman's intensity and sincerity are evident. He shares such intimate details of his life, complete with God's mercy in the process. This is the heart of testimony. The truth of it cannot be denied, and it is the kind of thing that transforms lives. Christopher Redner is a CCM guy who may be able to offer help and advice to Gary Chapman. He's been working with Bryan Duncan to produce and perform music many years after he lost his recording contracts and promotion in mainstream CCM. Might be worth considering.

Thanks, Andy, so enjoyed this episode of Frank talk, all the radio stories and I was relating over and over again. And yes, those Sunday morning shows with all or some Christian music were inspirational and influential, I was doing overnights at a big Top-40 FM in Canton, Ohio in '78 when the program director, Mr. Keith London, tasked me with dubbing a show from vinyl to reel because he knew I was a Jesus freak, lol. And it was great, my introduction to Contemporary Christian music. The show was Jesus Solid Rock, a one-hour music program hosted by Jerry Bryant and I still appreciate what those folks did with radio and CCM. And of course there was Powerline with Jon Rivers and its mix of pop and CCM. And this goes back to the early '70s but KFRC in San Francisco aired little inspirational messages by a Catholic priest, Father Harry I think he was from the God Squad, so cool and meaningful. 😀
