Dude, I've been flying since 1974. Your statement " I got this" is totally asinine. Your harness is shit and setup incorrectly. But hey WTF do I know. People like you give the rest of us hanglider pilots a bad reputation.
This flight had to be a blast for you ! I am a fix wing pilot (single land) and I noticed a few things, You (I believe your still over your launch point) and @ 45:40 "I said, He's got to be cold !" and that's exactly when you started to blow into your hands ! Also, what happens when you can't get out of a thermal, after all there is a fine line between it and a wind shear ? In light of that does a hang glider have a v-ne (airspeed never exceed), which looked to me like you were in a wind shear !
it TH-camErs
The video is great, you need to keep promoting your channel. Is not hard.
yess , big problem with your harness ?
I know it looks awkward, but the guy can fly. As others have said, the harness needs to be adjusted. My guess is the whole rig is secondhand, including the harness, which has not been made for his measurements. For example, the boots hanging out. I wouldn't think a newbie would be thermaling to 7000ft.
I'm not sure it was actually a low save! I mean, with so much wrong, landing asap would've been the order of the day
Is this a how not to fly a hang glider video ? Your reserve needs to just clear the basebar, you need to fly suprone, why are so many videos coming out of the States lately with totally incorrect harness setups, even with guys flying high performance wings, unreal, not only are you draggy AF, but you have little control, watch a Jonny Durand YT video for how you should have your harness positioning, that or add 150mm at least to your hang strap
Congratulations on the low save, but in all the years of hangliding I dont remember it being that uncomfortable.
Way too gusty for my liking
Obviously the RH down tube is bent and the harness level and hook in ajustement could be improve ...besides that nice place to fly....is this a oldie but goodie WW Sport 167 poor mans glider ...
Yeah it’s a classic glider, been flying it for years!
That's literally the best cut in history lol
Thank you Johnny for the bestest Birthday present. It is all about Jerrii-at-tricks, lol!!
Please, please get some professional training before you injure yourself, or worse. I won’t bother repeating all the stuff that other commenters have already listed. A good instructor will help you.
Appreciate the advice but I got this 😎
Wow, you got really lucky. From the video it looks like you immediately turn right (while on launch!) and your right wing comes pretty close to scraping the ground.
I see a lot of comments about the way you've set up your harness so you hang nearly upright, with your arms extended nearly straight to reach the control bar, and the way you frequently change your grip. I'm an ignorant noob to modern hang gliding, just starting lessons (When I flew before in the early to mid 70s I flew seated on a swing seat!). So, could you please share the rationale of your harness set up?
It would be better if you played a soothing song instead of this wind sound
Gotta love the home made Ram Air scoop made of duct tape. That poor animal. What were you thinking
Hahahaha ,regards
bad pilot near accident you thuch whit the paraglider side at the tree 🎄 be careful
i just gonna go little flight today 😂😂😂 man you are awesome 😎👍
Are those your shoes sticking out of a hole worn through bottom of a very hand-me-down, too short harness ? I would have been interested in seeing the landing also. Is that wing a WW - HP ?
Great flight and recording! Although that was a shaky launch. Keep your shoulders snug in those uprights. There shouldn’t be a lot of slack in your straps. Also you are setup too high above the control bar. Almost at full arms length. This limits your range of motion in relation to controlling the glider. Great flight at the end of the day.
If you adjust your harness correctly you will have much more control of the wing and won`t arrive with exhaustion. Also you won`t need to use the uprights or have to fly with your fingertips, pretty sure you`ll enjoy the whole flight better, i know we will enjoy watching you fly much more,,, Look forward to seeing more from there,,,
I think you have invented a new way to fly. Not prone, not supine, not seated. Standing??? Wish we could see the landing too. If it was as interesting as the Launch it`d be epic,,, Speaking of launch, wings level, keep bar in, fly it from the first step, looks like you only just had enough airflow to get that wing down, you were very lucky. Great to see some real 1980s enthusiasm,,,
The only justification I can see for the harness setup is back or neck problems?
are you feet out of the end of the harness?
In 46 years of hang gliding I have never reversed my grip on the control bar like that - something is very wrong. Does the glider tend to dig into turns which is causing the reverse grip to push your body weight uphill ?
Get someone in the know to help you set up your harness properly - you are WAY feet down. It will take less effort if your arms are not fully extended all the time.
He also needs to stop pumping the control bar.
Body position is hard to look at.
One fist always worked good for me!!!
Please consider having someone help you properly adjust your harness for the correct hang position.
Absolutely. And you’re not the only one I’ve seen lately with improper pronation position.
ubogi pes! kaj mora vse prestati poleg tebe!
Hey Johnny! I just found your channel and there is so much badness in your videos that I can't stop watching!! ;-). At 6.05 on this video - something falls off your glider? What was it? Maybe the nose cone? You REALLY need to sort out your harness - it looks so very uncomfortable, you are way too high and flying in such an upright position it's surprising you can control the glider. Also - perhaps you are hanging too far back so the glider is trimmed too slowly? If you let go, does it stall? It looks to me like you need to move it forward a little and raise that trim speed. I don't like to criticise, I am enjoying flicking through your videos - keep 'em coming!
Agree a bit too high hang point
Looks like an incredible experience.
I'm returning to hangliding after 20 years. I see so much wrong here !
😂😂😂😂😂
ueh you missed a lot 😂
A me viene un sospetto non riesci a perdere quota mi sa di principiante?
WTF Bro ?
straight arms constantly? great way to lose the base bar and tumble, find an instructor locally who knows what they're doing and give advice, this is all shades of wrong
Can you elaborate? His speed and attitude seem OK and he doesn't seem to be pushing out too much on the control bar. Are his arms mostly straight because he has his harness set so it's high and he flies in a semi upright angle and not totally prone? Or does he just have freakishly short arms??? But seriously, I'm not an HG pilot so please enlighten me. What's the danger here ...how is he risking a tumble?
I notes that too .......looks like his Glider is trimmed to fly in sitting position , I would recommend to move the pilot weight 1- 2 inch forward and use a harness for horizontal flying , don't experiment without consulting
Hanging way too high bro, chest should almost be on the basebar, no wonder it looked like u were out of control the whole time
Ok , the shut on your chest ask for more height , your hang in procedure and your harness with that stuck sipper making me nervous , painful to watch , happy landing to you :)
saw this vid..recognized it.. flew this site many times myself..Woodrat Mnt ,Ruch oregon..late evening glass offs are very nice ,smooth air..mid afternoons can get rowdy.. 1200 fpm up an ..great save ..wow.. elevator up..thanks JL
This looks like a great site to fly. Where is it? Glad you hooked a boomer and had a great flight. This is either one of the most turbulent flights I've ever watched, or your camera mount was bouncing around. When it's that bumpy, I usually land. Before take off, you were messing with our hang loops, but once you got hooked in, you didn't do a hang check. You should do that on every flight, but especially when your lines are confused or messed up. Sorry to lecture. Fly safe.
This is Woodrat mountain in southern Oregon
Stracony :)
Hi Johnny, a great flight in turbulent air and a great save! 2 comments: 1. It looks that you are being hanged too high above speedbar, as a result, your body weight is less effective when trying to turn and you need to invest more power with your arms to maneuver. 2. Also looks that you are not in full lying position, seems like 30% standing. This reduce the glide ratio.

What a beautiful day for flying! You ROCK! We miss you!
WORK IT! GO JOHNNY GO!!!!
Is that your boots sticking out of the bottom of the harness? If you can't get them inside then the harness is not adjusted right either spend some serious time adjusting it or get a new one that fits. Flying is so much easier and enjoyable when the harness is set up right. Says the pilot whose harness is now to big having lost 5 stone😂.
stuck sipper , old harness , get something aerodynamic with your shut mounted on the side
