Alissa Knight's Lecture at Harvard University, Sanders Theater: Falling From Trees
I have a number of bucket list items, but speaking at Harvard University was at the top of that list. I just never thought, as a high school dropout, I would be asked to lecture at Harvard. Last year, I had the profound honor of speaking at the famous Sanders Theater at Harvard University on my life growing up as a recovering hacker, serial entrepreneur, and eventually Hollywood Director. Harvard has posted that lecture on its TH-cam channel. Please enjoy "Falling From Trees"

    You sync all shots using the external recording as the base placing it on track1. then all the angles are placed from track 2 etc. You delink audio from video for the multicamclip, pick track 1, then lock the track from changes. now you can edit between angles using only the external recording for audio. I do it for every videoclips that I shoot.

      Your attention to the comments is a great plus! I found very helpful the part regarding the node tree Logic and the use of pre group/clip/post group/timeline. I know that there would be a lot of potential behind the clip and timeline switch in the node section but I never found someone explaining it on TH-cam. I see a lot of video of people explaining how to color a clip, but issues starts when you have different Clips to match and get the same color grading. And this is something that few people are teaching. In those days I’m starting watching your live sessions. Amazing!

    Thank you! But your way before applying the LUT looks so complicated. If you need a natural look, why don't you use the simple Color calibration chart? With one click you can generate the perfectly exposed and color-graded part that matches your previous and future video parts. Afterwards, you can enhance shadows and make small corrections which will be the same for the whole of your movie, and then apply LUT.... Cheers!

    Hi Alissa! I just discovered you yesterday and love your content, energy and dedication ! I wish I had been around when you were parting with your Ultrastudio hahaha I’m 1:12:16 in and I had to comment regarding the bug with power windows not appearing when you select the node. I remember it happening for a while on my end and found a solution and sort of a reason for it, it might not even be a bug and that’s why it’s not been addressed. So, to easily show the power windows (or anything that’s not popping up), head to the bottom left corner outside frame of your viewer screen (I might be wrong with the title, but the screen that’s next to your nodes, not the video clean feed display hahaha Anyways, in that position will be the tools that are active. At the moment when you couldn’t see your power windows, the active tool was the qualifier I believe! The moment you implemented your solution by going to the menus and enabling the power windows, the little icon of qualifiers changed to the power window icon :D I believe you used the qualifier tool last, and that that is the reason why it didn’t switch to the power windows, it thought you were still using the qualifier. I guess sometimes it does switch, and sometimes it doesn’t, depending on its recognition of what’s currently being used :) I hope this helps and clarifies this behavior, and if I’m wrong, I’m happy to learn what’s happening with it! Wishing you all the best, keep going, you and your work are amazing! Nothing but love for you and your community! Kindest regards from Serbia! Teo P.S. I just uploaded my first ever colorist showreel here on TH-cam, and it would mean a lot to me if you gave it a quick look, it’s only about a minute long :) Any advice regarding the editing and opinion on the coloring (does it look professional/industry standard), are appreciated! Perhaps you can explain something to me. Why is it that SDR content generally looks brighter and more vibrant than its HDR counterpart? Meaning when I directly compare the same exact content on a calibrated panel in both SDR and HDR, the SDR version will almost always seem to have a higher average luminosity level and more vibrant colors. This is not because brightness levels are cranked up either. HDR seems a bit less saturated but with the benefit of the occasional high nit specular highlight and perhaps better shadow detail. Just having a hard time finding a technical explanation for why SDR is actually more vibrant and generally brighter on average. Is it because it is a more compressed format? I have read that SDR has a higher average luminosity level, this seems to be the case.

    • @knightlightshow
      @knightlightshow 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are several technical factors at play that explain why HDR content should generally offer a wider range of brightness and color, with the caveat of proper implementation and display capabilities. SDR is in fact limited to a smaller range of brightness and color values, typically with a peak brightness around 100 nits and a standard color gamut like Rec. 709. This can lead to washed-out highlights and crushed shadows, particularly in scenes with high contrast. HDR expands the range of brightness and color significantly, with peak brightness reaching up to 10,000 nits in some displays and wider color gamuts like DCI-P3 or Rec. 2020. This allows for more realistic representation of bright lights, deeper shadows, and a wider range of colors. I'm not sure what kind of display you're using but it might be related to tone mapping, a process that translates the HDR content's wider range of values into the display's capabilities. Improper tone mapping can lead to the HDR image appearing dimmer than the SDR version, especially if the average brightness is brought down to match the limitations of a non-HDR display. Also, not all displays are created equal. An HDR-capable display with limited peak brightness or inaccurate color reproduction might not showcase the full potential of HDR content, leading to a less impressive viewing experience compared to a well-calibrated SDR display. Basically, there's more than one factor at play here such as the display itself.

As for the camera on the light side, you’re correct but it was done intentionally as it was a screen test and tutorial video to show both the dark and light sides of his face since the tutorial was on lighting. Thanks again for the comment.

    Notes on 5:19: Rembrandt lighting is of course used in more than just superhero movies. If you're new to lighting techniques and the concept of Rembrandt lighting, give yourself the challenge of looking for it in your favorite bingeable TV series or movie. It's a very common method of lighting for DPs that adds dimensionality to your show/film. Remember, one of our most important jobs is making the 2D world we're filming more 3 dimensional to viewers. Use every tool you can to add more dimensionality to your shot (read: paint with light). Yes. We placed our C-cam on the lit side of the talent to show the full 180 degrees of his face in this lighting setup.
