Earthbags Raised Beds Presentation
February 13, 2015. Just finished my first earthbag raised garden beds. The bags are filled with a kind of road base (Here it is called Tucuruguay) and stabilized with 7% cement. I'm planning on letting the sun degrade the bags and remove them when they are teared up. Then I will white wash with Lime. In the mean time, tomorrow I will bring in the compost and probably next week I will plant Wate...

Mexico.
podria compartir los planos por favor?
i gotta say mineral oil and clay sand mix for final coat ...this water proofing and sealing will do the trick ...just like our skin oil seals and water proofs the cracks ...

This is water proof or not water to clean floor that the clay any problem give ?
Que hermosa Gracias por compartir
Add fine straw to reduce cracks👍
So what to do for cracks
Cope
Did you use a moisture barrier under the bottom layer?
do you need a vapor barrier ?
Algun numero?
En Estados Unidos (619)382-0759 email javierdipp@hotmail.com
nice video
Good job Javier. Cracks are normal, now just use linseed oil, 4 to 6 times
You do it just fine. Just Lay the floor tile on top, it solve your problem.
Llo enestos momento travajo eneso
was watching a related video where they used cement added to the dirt and did the same thing, one step they mentioned was that it had to be watered lightly for days while drying so that it doesnt crack. could be possible that slowing the drying process reduces chances of cracking. (it seems that way with concrete and cement dirt mixes)
Nice movie. However you can make it yourself. Just google INPLIX and learn how to do it easily.
A final covering layer of 1/8 - 1/4 inch clay mixed with oil and rubbed until smooth will provide a polished and water proof layer.
Si gustas mayor información, contáctame directamente a javierdipp@hotmail.com
ad for 1 part clay 1/4 part lime
Where did u get the bags
+Sislertx I built this house in Baja Mexico, I purchased the bags with a local bag supplier. They are used for sugar. I had to cut them in half lengthwise and saw them with a home sewing machine. That is how I made them thin.
After is cracks, before it is dry, tamp it to make it hard.
+Jon Bruce agreed. plywood with a plate compactor on top.
Is there another video of the floor being finished with the oil?
As a potter i know that a substance call "Grog" will keep clay from cracking. It is a material made from fired clay. You can buy it in any pottery supply shop. I do not have any experience in straw ball but i think that it may help. Let me know what you think?
Hi! Do you have to put plastic under this floor? If yes can you put one layer and make a fire on top of it to make it water resistant?
You're supposed to treat the floor with oil I think. And then add another layer, let it dry, then treat with oil again
Saludos.
i would make a more softer mix for filling in the cracks but also add washing up liquid in it that helps prevent it from cracking then use a hard brush to brush the soft mix into the cracks as you do when rendering in cold weather
Come to India and learn,.
I've heard that when you saturate it with linseed oil you end up with an almost rockhard floor and it doesn't crack.
Saludos.
There is to much clay in the mix, The clay shrinks when it dries, this is the problem with cob period, a lot of people think that cob means clay but it what really means is muddled sand. Sand is the structure of cob, clay is the binder and straw is the strengthener and water is the vehicle that brings it all together. you only want 30%clay. You also mixed it and layed it, I would try letting it set over night or even for a day on a tarp in a warm area, not necessarily in direct sun light, roll the tarp every couple of hours and you will notice that the pile not only shrinks but will become elastic, you have shrunk your cob now and should have better luck with your cracks, it is sort of like when you buy a new pair of pants, they never fit like they did in the store after you wash them. I have never seen a cob floor that didnt crack a little that is why you do it in thin layers and then finish it with a nice silt layer and then seal it with linseed oil. good luck, don't give up.
Lucky me, I love cracks!!
David Tyler How about cow poo? I heard it works like cement and a smoother?
David Tyler I understood, 1 part clay, 2 parts sand, 1 part straw, and a touch of volcanic ash / hydrated lime. Yes agree with the elasticity and also tamping the sub layers helps I believe.
+John McGlone BBQ ash works just fine as is rice flour.
+Luciffrit Isn't volcanic ash from burnt stone? I know Pozzolan (volcanic admix) makes lime concrete more waterproof. What does the BBQ ash do?
I wonder if letting it dry real slow would help minimize cracking. It could be covered up and kept cool while it cures.
the top most layer should be plaster of cow dung mixed with mud and water...,the surface will be smooth but then cracks start appearing after some days, about a week later, so must plaster continuously.
too much water in the mix can cause cracking, also parts where the water does not reach will form cracking, its all about the water.
The old trick to avoid cracking is to use urine (human or cow's) instead of water. It also works perfect with clay as super durable material to insulate straw bale walls. I found this during my studies on urine therapy.
Hey Javier, this project looks very interesting. I don't get much out of the vid and I just watched your earthen floor where you add some instructions; could you please add instructions in English in this video as well? that would be most helpful!! many thanks and keep posting your DIY videos!!
use rabbit shit and ponytail hair with the clay and sand this will reduce the shrinking and stop it cracking
Cool! Thanks
definitely make some test bricks (without straw) to determine your sand-to-clay proportion. Sand controls the cracking; clay is the binder that holds everything together, straw knits it all together.
I used the clay from the site. I don't know exactly what kind is it. These used to be agricultural land in a desert area, I dig about 3 feet and used that clay. I is super sticky and has performed great on my walls. The walls haven't cracked at all, but I guess it is because I had a Master Plasterer from southern Mexico do the work, An 87 year old gentleman, that had build Adobe and cob houses since he was 14. So the best feature of my house are the plastered walls.
Yes, I live in a desert. we get temperatures as high as 120 degrees F. so the floor dried in 2 or 3 days, But I always wetted the previous layer before installing the next. Since I did the work on weekends, by the time I got there the floors were completely dried out. do you think that makes a difference?
Thank you for your comment, I added more sand in a finer grit to the mix and reduced the cracking a lot. I haven't used a wood trowel, will try that in my next attempt. I just started to watch your videos and it is very interesting. I'm going to start building the cob interior walls and furniture, will do bathroom walls, seating area and kitchen out of cob. If you have any tips I would really appreciate them.
How did you do bathroom walls out of cob since it is a watered area?
I think I go it. added more sand to the mix and used a finer sand, reduced cracks a lot. thanks for your comments.
Thanks for the tip. I will try it.
Thanks but no thanks. I haven't used any animal dung in this house, I've been tempted but than nobody wants to participate.
