How to measure rack tube diameter without tools.
Find the complete pannier tutorial on rackhackers.com/diy-pannier-tutorial-overview/
Circumference to diameter values:
(compare the distance between the dots on the yarn to these)
19 mm (~ 3/4 in) - 6 mm
25 mm (~ 1 in) - 8 mm
31 mm (~ 1 1/4 in) - 10 mm
38 mm (~ 1 1/2 in) - 12 mm
If the value measured is slightly bigger, round it down. For example, on the video I measured 33,5mm for a 10mm rack tube, because of the paint. That is completely within the 10mm size. It is better to have it a little tighter, than having it loose.

    Help! Folks in my city does not want to part with their plastic cans! They use them to store stuff, just cut it in half, et voila! They even use them as seedling pots. I ultimately had to buy two buckets of detergent to use them on my bicycle rack!

    Hello. Great tutorial. I see that the hardware is designed for containers from 10l to 35l. To get an idea for scale, could you please share the size of the blue containers you used in the tutorial? I am guessing 20l? It seems like the white panniers at th-cam.com/video/5XayOXlHZ6c/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2cFaULTaVdw2WDhw&t=67 are bigger. Maybe these are the 30l or 35l?

    That’s pretty slick. The cans would be perfect targets for sticker-bombing. One thing concerned me. The quick release… if it vibrates loose, does it interfere with the spokes? That could be bad.

    • @rackhackers
      @rackhackers 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Valid question :) We ordered a very short quick release lever model, to avoid any kind of contact with the spokes. It had to be specifically produced for the order, but it was worth it for the comfort of not having to avoid the spokes when we open and close the lever. Other than that, the elastomer added to the quick release will probably prevent it from opening spontaneously.

  • @prophetzarquon1922

    Good videos so far. These seem really useful. Frame-mounted racks don't mess up one's handling the way bar\fork mounted racks do; but most bikes lack mounting points on the front steerer tube. Sure, more volume can be placed up front if it moves with the bars\forks, but carrying anything more than a few pounds that way feels awful. Sticking all the cargo weight out back isn't a great solution either! Could you demonstrate how to make a top-tube mounted front+rear rack for full-suspension bikes? Hanging supports from the top tube, to extend a rack off the front & rear of the frame, has worked out great for me, but my implementation used some uncommon parts & required more fabrication than the pannier cans you promoted. I would love to see plans\kits for a top-tube mounted front+rear rack! I think it might be the #1 thing that made riding rough roads with heavy loads, less cumbersome for me.

    • @rackhackers
      @rackhackers 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! Where exactly would the bag position be? Do you have a photo of it?

    • @prophetzarquon1922
      @prophetzarquon1922 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rackhackers Sure I can try to get you a photo. Uh... I'm not sure how I'd post it though? Basically if you imagine tying two long poles to the bike frame's top-tube, so that the poles stick out front & back, that's where I put the bags on my last full-suspension bike. On the ebike we currently have, the top-tube is curved & a different length, so I experimented a bit with making something that would be adjustable but I was just using cardboard tubes to visualize LOL To be honest, I'm a bit stymied what material to use. I used carbon fiber rods before & they were plenty strong but kinda springy; ~1.5x0.3" flat bars of aluminum worked too but good lord they were heavy. Rather than lashing one rod/bar to each side of the tup-tube, I think my best plan so far is to take a section of pipe with an inner diameter wide enough to fit over the widest portion of the top tube, cut it to a length about two feet longer than the top-tube, & cut it in half lengthwise, to make a C-shaped channel that would drop over the top-tube, with long notches cut out of each end of the half-pipe for the stem & seat post to fit through. Probably drill lots of strategically spaced holes, to shave off some weight. Mostly though, I'm hoping someone else can improve on my idea!?

    • @prophetzarquon1922
      @prophetzarquon1922 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rackhackers I actually think _individual_ front \ rear racks that strap to the top-tube, would be totally doable. I just haven't tried making one yet!

      We thought about it, but the HDPE plastic is soft enough to deform slightly around the washers, and seal by itself. At some of the points, the surface needs to be worked as described in the tutorials.

      Have you tried asking at businesses that use liquid products in larger quantities, like carwashes, industrial laundries, hotels or agricultural producers? They use these cans because it is the most convenient way for handling liquids. The best is probably to go directly to recycling centers that serve these businesses.

      @@rackhackers You have to be extra extra careful when using discarded plastic containers, and be completely sure that they were not originally used as containers for toxic chemicals or agrochemical products. Storing your clothes or food in a container that contained Roundup or some other pesticide doesn't sound very healthy. that said, the mounting solution and the handle setup you find look amazing, congratulations
