I made a mistake this year when it came to halloween. I bought a fog machine for the garage, and completely filled the whole thing where you can't see nothing. Then I had to go inside so I opened the door to go inside for my garage and next thing I know my alarms for my smoke detectors are blaring. It looked like the whole entire house was on fire with that much fog. And yes I did have the garage door open by the way.
at least you know your smoke alarms are working!

I prefer oil based haze to make the light beams cloud-free and evenly visible. I also use water based short standing fog for some cloud effects.
There are pros and cons to both. Oil-based haze looks great, but with the right equipment and settings water-based haze effects can compete!

I carry a bag of elastic shower caps with my gear. If I have access to the smoke detectors, I ask if I can cover them for the night. Most venues LOVE the idea. I always take them down and have management double check. It's a lot easier than trying to access the fire panel and disable the alarms. Most venues don't even know how to access it! Of course, you'll need a ladder.

I can answer this. Optical type: Yes. The one over my bathroom door goes off when I take a hot steamy shower. Ionizing type: Possibly,if the particles are large and/or dense enough.
