Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.-John 11:21. Jesus could have healed Lazarus, as Martha stated in today’s text. But Jesus has in mind doing something even more remarkable. He promises: “Your brother will rise.” He also says: “I am the resurrection and the life.” (John 11:23, 25) Yes, he has God-given power over life and death. Earlier, he raised a young girl shortly after her death and he also raised a young man, apparently on the day the man died. (Luke 7:11-15; 8:49-55) But can he resurrect someone who has been dead for four days and whose body has begun to decay? Mary, Lazarus’ other sister, goes out to meet Jesus. She repeats what her sister said: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” (John 11:32) Seeing and hearing Mary and others with her weeping, Jesus is deeply saddened. Moved by tender compassion for his friends, he gives way to tears. He understands how painful it is when a loved one dies. Surely, he is eager to remove the cause of their tears! RIP to Gunny Nurse, who was the baddest (he was the real deal), most squared away, greatest Marine I ever served with and he taught me more about leading people than anyone…I still bring up stories to people about things he did to provide examples of leadership and character…RIP to the GOAT

May God bring peace and love to The Nurse Family, I crossed paths with Ssgt Nurse in C 1-11 in 1985 we deployed together on West Pac . I remember a firm but fair leader, mentor and teacher. One who truly embodied being a leader and definitely a strong man until Valhalla My Brother RIP

Gunny Nurse was my Platoon Sgt. in Bravo 1/11. There are many bosses in our Corps and very few LEADERS - this guy was among the latter. Went on Float with Him as well. Gunny was an expert Thai Boxer and that joker pinned me against the wall, by my NECK (on ship), with his foot. I am 6'5 and Gunny is, what, maybe 5'6? He did not like subordinates using hand gestures when speaking to him, even when "at ease." HARD CORE Marine's Marine.

Staff Sgt. Nurse was my Platoon Sergeant when I first got to Charles Battery in 1984. He was one of the best Marines I ever knew. He was hard but a good man. I had the pleasure to serve beside him for 3 years. May he rest in peace.
