Marquette Hens, (one broody) time outside, treats bring them back to run
The Marquette Hens enjoy some summertime fresh air. One broody hen can't relax enough to enjoy the day, the rest of the hens get lured back to the coop but alas I forgot the treats and they patiently waited until I brought new ones.

Cold February Chicken Chores start to finish

Chicken chores happen at least once a week- unless it's freezing out (wherein the frozen poo is un-cleanable.) Dealing with freezing temperatures, faulty heated waterer's, whiny chickens and behind schedule, this is a true account of what I go through weekly taking care of my 8 backyard chickens. Tiring, but still worth it. XXOO We love our Marquette Hens!
Warm winter weather day with the Marquette Hens

Winter weather has taken it's toll on the back garden, a predator has clawed away the burlap covering from the chicken run, but despite all this, the Marquette Hens enjoy pecking around the apiary anyway. Spring will come again, and with it the growth of flowers, vegetation and hopefully a strong, productive bee population.
Great Blue Heron at Stately Hyland Manor

Our back garden is shared with a nature preserve. It affords us visits from amazing wildlife, and today, a visit from a Great Blue Heron. The energetic flapping of the Mallards in the stream below are not making this an ideal fishing spot today!

Freezing weather tested the reality of our 'heated waterers', and they failed. In a pinch, had to supplement with the heated 'dog bowl' which gets sand thrown into it moments after filling. This doesn't bother the chickens though, as you can see they truly enjoy drinking water this way! The refreshed and defrosted waterer hangs full and unused along with the solid brick of ice that it contained...

That was awesome! We have a lot of foxes coming through our yard because my neighbors in the back put out tons of food for the birds and also scatter bread pieces. No fatalities so far even though there are lots of stray kitties around.

Well instead of complaining, YOU COULD EAT HER, especially if you cannot afford ten foot high fencing to keep them out.
