When in doubt always completely rethread the machine from scratch, making sure the presser foot is raised, so that the thread easily slips in between the open tension discs(they close when the presser foot is lowered), check that the bobbin is in the right way around and make sure to change your machine needles every 8 hours or every new project. I also make sure to clean out any dust bunnies and oil regularly. I prefer using vintage full metal bodied mechanical sewing machines as they are so much more reliable and durable. Personally I never really use any of the fancy stitches (straight stitch, zig zag, overlock sometimes buttonholes) so the older machines suit my needs over the new machines out there which I find so slow to use.

hello. I randomly found your tiktok account 2+ years ago and have been following you on social media ever since (hi from Paris). I love these videos. even though they don't get many views, they should. you are hilarious and it's fascinating watching how others sew (i do too). everything from the chef john music, to the goofs, to the great teaching, to the fashion show, is *chefs kiss*.

Let me know how it works over time. I bought a similar model a couple of decades ago and had a lot of issues with skipped stitches. I have bought a Janome MC 6600 twice. Now I have Janome, Juki, Babylock and Sailrite machines. I have 9 machines way too overkill. I use my Juki Industrial the most.

I'm a quilter and when you said you don't prewash your fabric for quilts I kinda gasped. I always prewash because cotton fabric is not so predictable in how it shrinks. I promised my 2 nieces that I would make baby quilts for all their children and I wish they would stagger them...lol Everybody is due the same time. I made one shirt before. It was an old one that was getting worn out so I ripped out all the seams, made a pattern out of it and made a new shirt...I used a single color cloth with no pattern, and it came out perfect. I think a pattern might have sent me "round the bend as they say. YT recommended this channel and I enjoyed your video so I subscribed.

The wine bag is cute and although I love math, I think it will prevent some from trying this pattern. I love the idea of quilting the fabric. However, there is no way I would ever do all that math for a wine bag. I would have rolled that bottle in paper, added seam allowance and the shaping at the top and cut a pattern. I don’t drink, but I do make things like this to give wine as gifts to others. Thanks for the quilting idea.

Oh how timely that I found this video! I’ve just begun to cut out my patterned denim for this jacket! I live in San Francisco where one can wear a denim jacket all year round (though there are days in the winter you need a wool hoodie underneath). I was wondering if I wanted to make one lined how would I go about it? The only thing I was sad about was that there were NO INSIDE POCKETS. As a woman (who mostly wears men’s clothing, cause pockets! When I sew I always make sure all my pockets are functional and I add inside pockets. I wish you had a “Tools I use” video so we could click an Amazon link and throw some money your way. This is a GREAT video. Thank you.

Thank you for this video. Having never sewed a stitch before, my wife decided that making a kimono/yukata style robe from scratch would be the best way to craft her cosplay. We are so lucky that you had a video using the exact pattern that we bought. I can't even tell you how many times we watched this video while trying to figure out the terminology of a pattern. Just like you, we had decided that we weren't going to use a lining for our project, so your tips really helped. We finally completed the robe tonight and it looks pretty good for complete newbies. We can't thank you enough for your help!
