Fabrication Detail - Mike Huffer Sculpture
มุมมอง 888วันที่ผ่านมา
Doug and Mike have collaborated on several sculptures, often meeting in the shop on Sculpture Sundays. This video show how Doug fabricated struts to hold a vertical sculpture created by Mike. The final sculpture was chromed, and to accommodate the chroming process, the connections were fabricated to be easily disassembled. Doug shows and describes how he fabricated the bolted connections.
Tools for Modifying Screws
มุมมอง 85514 วันที่ผ่านมา
Doug describes a couple of ways to shorten screws - using pliers (great for in the field) and using a shop built fixture when in the shop. The fixture is a simple piece of 1 inch angle iron that has been tapped and threaded to accommodate several common screw sizes. A screw threaded though one of the holes can then be easily cut to length with a bandsaw. Doug also shows a simple tool for holdin...
Shop Built Soft Hammers
มุมมอง 92021 วันที่ผ่านมา
Soft hammers are useful when you don't want to mark the material being worked, as often happens with steel hammers. Doug describes 2 methods he uses for making hammers. A cartridge hammer holds a piece of oak, and an HDPE hammer is made by fabricating a frame around the plastic. Doug then shows how he fabricates an aluminum hammer.
A New Old Sign for the Shop - Doug Thompson Metalcraft
มุมมอง 601หลายเดือนก่อน
Doug's building partner, Kevin Potter of Kevin Potter, USA, bought an old cast iron sign that was once part of a bridge in Ohio. Doug and Kevin decided to install it as the header of the door to their shop. Doug show how he fabricates artistic bolt heads to replace the standard hex shape, and then installs the new old sign.

Modified Vise Grip for Holding Small Parts
มุมมอง 1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Doug describes a vise grip modification that facilitates working on small parts in the shop. The square tube that is welded to the vise grip can be clamped in a vise and oriented at any angle need for grinding, drilling, polishing and generally working on small parts that are difficult to hold.
Making a Punch and Die to form a holder for a tea light in a sculptural base.
มุมมอง 1.7Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Doug shows how he made a punch and die used to form an indented cup that holds a tea light, or maybe a candle. The parts for the die were bent with the Hossfeld bender. The sculptural base of the tea light holder was created by heating a 4in x4in tube and pressing it with the 40 ton press. Prior to pressing, the tube was scored with a grinder.
Portable Welder Tower - for the field and the shop
มุมมอง 1.3Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Doug describes a tower that he built to hold his welder in the shop and on the road. The tower is designed to securely hold a Millermatic 211 welder for transporting to field sites and can be loaded into a truck by one person. The tower has several racks and hooks to hold ancillary equipment such as grinders and flap wheels. A foldout table is attached to the side.

How much did it cost?
Wish we had seen a bit of the inserts you put into them after the crushing. I'm a big fan of crushing tubes for effect. I crushed some aluminum tubing and then used it as the supports for a bathroom shelf, adding a bunch of character to something that is normally just simple and plain.
Check out this video for a bit more on the inserts: th-cam.com/video/FywO1kspt90/w-d-xo.html
SMUSH
Okay, but whij welding and not drilling and tapping holes and then screw from underneath the base plate?
The welds hold the struts securely to the vertical plate, and passing the threaded sections through the holes and securing with nuts allows for the base plate to be removed from the vertical plate to accommodate chroming. Tapped holes would be compromised during chroming. Thanks for watching!
Great machine, so fast!
Just found this channel and your shop is absolutely heaven for a guy like me. The miter station was exactly something I've needed to do for a while and finally I got some very good ideas making one. The measuring system on it... absolutely beautiful for the simplicity!
Thanks for your kind feedback! Check back when you have a chance, we plan to keep making videos.
Great process. Wish you had shown a longer shot of the finished piece!
That is a really good suggestion. We are learning as we go with the videos, and we will try to include better/longer shots of finished pieces as we go forward. Thank you for your ongoing interest!
Is a hack saw too difficult to handle?
A hack saw is often the perfect tool for the job!
The angle iron with all the tapped holes is genius. Seriously the hits keep coming. Keep sharing 'em!!
I have been modifying my own screws way less efficiently than you have just shown. Really appreciate the videos you make and for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for your feedback and for watching!
This is the beauty of TH-cam, being able to learn from craftsmen like yourself! Many thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Very clever! Thanks for sharing!
Would you anneal the aluminum?
No, the aluminum is not annealed
Thanks uncle Doug!
3/4" tube and garden hose is a great pro tip. I should make some of these. Never too many hammers in the shop! Thanks Doug!
Bon Boulo😆😆👍👍
Having just watched this video, I have to ask why you put the diagonal support in from top to bottom rather than the other way round when it would be in compression. Considering that all your processes are very well thought out, this seems counter intuitive.
When I make wood gates I put the diagonal support in compression, but with metal gates, and given the relatively small size of the tubing, I put the diagonal in tension.
@ thanks for the reply. It’s nice to hear other people’s thoughts.
Again fantastic video Doug. I've been working within the fabrication industry for 12 years and all these little tricks and tooling I have to say are fantastic. Great work.
Thanks for your kind feedback and for watching!
Very cool!
That’s pretty amazing!
Great!
So cool!
Very handy table there!
Outstanding!
Thanks so much for sharing! Outstanding craftsmanship!
So handy!
Great build!
Just wanted to say how fantastic all these small tools you have made are, I work in a small fabrication workshop and they are all so well thought out. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. Rob.
Thanks for your kind feedback, Rob. Have fun in your workshop!
Nice work, nice shop. How often do you use that synchrowave? I have a syncrowave 350, don’t use it much.
Why did you go with 16ga if it has a frame? Seems like a lot of weight going with such thick sheet stock.
The choice of material was driven by aesthetics. We wanted to use hot rolled steel, which was available in 16 gauge, to match other elements in the kitchen. Thanks for your interest.
Wow ! That bender you used to bend the brass corner trim is really interesting looking . Is that something you built yourself ?
Take a look at this video on the small bender: th-cam.com/video/tQCU03f3QV8/w-d-xo.html
If you don't want to pull out the metric tape, you can get an engineer's scale tape that is in base 10 vs the regular tapes that are fractional. Thanks for another glimpse into how you work. You really have an amazing grip on metalwork and fabrication. Please keep the videos coming!
Great idea! Thanks for your ongoing interest.
What would u want to repair rubbish like that for
Wow! What a cool tool mod!
Really nice setup! How come that first big gas bottle isn’t secured with a chain or strap?
Thanks for the tip, I have one like this that needs a Tig weld repair.
Versa: Great name for a vise.
Most of the vise-grips modifications that we have seen are modifications to the jaws. This is another clever take.
Funny how your buddy also named Doug kind of speaks in a similar sort of style to you. Nice repair. I've repaired cast iron stuff with silicon bronze before and generally had good luck. Obviously highly depends on what you're repairing (ornamental vs functional as one example).
So gas weld it with pure cast iron rod-
The repair was accomplished by TIG welding with silicon bronze rod, also called silica bronze.
Did have website or something where you sell your work?
Not yet! We are working on that. Please send an email to DTMetalcraftMedia@gmail.com if you would like, we are happy to answer questions. Thanks for your interest.
Nice haircut! Your barber did an amazing job 😊 Amazing content as always!!
Great idea on that welding cart!
Thanks, DT!
Great idea. It’s now on my to-do list!
It's essentially a blacksmith's filing vise, but taken to the next level. Please keep sharing these genius ideas and videos!
Nice modification!! and a great idea!! I will make one myself soon.
💪😎💪
Yet another highly useful tool build.
Doug Thomson in the shop baby! love your content...but its too short ;/
Thanks for the feedback! We would love to have you spend more time with us in the shop, we will work on some longer videos.
