Why would anyone want New York style anything in Prescott ?

Three items to point out. HOA's are not always the evil stepchild people portray them to be. I live in a small HOA and the CC&R's help keep our community the beautiful place to live that it is. Also, Mt. Vernon has a lot of AirBnB rentals. Many guests feel they can be loud and abuse the rules when staying there. There are many other excellent communities that do not have HOA's. Tenney Ranch is one that comes to mind.

One other thing to check since Prescott has a lot of tourists is AirBnbs. I live in a small mountain community in Riverside county in California and they have let AirBnbs go rampant. For a town of 3000 we have over 500 AirBnbs. I do not enjoy living on hotel row and would be very put off if I found a house with vacation rentals all around it. No one asks us if we mind having a vacation rental next door. They just do it and we have to suffer with people coming and going at all hours, outside lights on all night long, loud music, parties, making campfires when we are not allowed. I have one neighbor that almost got shot by an arrow as he was sitting on his deck. Seems the people renting the AirBnb next door to his house decided to practice their archery while they were here. Hopefully the city keeps a lid on these types of rentals better than my county does.

That's not always true about California. It depends on where you live. If you are in LA, San Diego, beach cities, etc., then yes, you call sell your house and buy 2 in Prescott, but in a lot of areas of CA, you aren't going to get those extremely high prices. We have been looking at houses in Prescott for 2 years now and there will be no way we can sell our current house in CA for enough money to buy a similar one in Prescott. Everything in our price range is either a mobile home or a total dump. Guess we missed the boat on getting an affordable house in Prescott.
