The Circle Line Extension (CCLe) is a 2.4-kilometre extension and branch line of Singapore's Circle Line (CCL), opened on 14 January 2012, connecting Promenade to Marina Bay via Bayfront which is located within Marina Bay Sands. During off-peak hours, the Circle Line Extension (CCLe) operates as a shuttle between Stadium and Marina Bay. While the Circle Line Extension (CCLe) is a branch from Promenade, trains cannot efficiently turn back at Promenade as there are no crossovers. The nearest possible crossover is at the cripple siding after Stadium station.
This extension provided enhanced connectivity to the Marina Bay area, which was rapidly developing as a financial and leisure hub, including landmarks like Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay. It allowed commuters to travel directly between the Circle Line and Marina Bay without having to transfer at other MRT lines, during peak hours.
The CCLe made it more convenient for passengers traveling to the Marina Bay Financial Centre and leisure attractions. It also improved overall connectivity in Singapore’s central region by integrating various MRT lines.
This 2012 extension was an important step in the ongoing expansion of Singapore’s MRT network, supporting the development of the city’s downtown and financial areas.
The Circle Line 6 (CCL6) extension will extend this existing branch line from Marina Bay with 3 stations to HarbourFront, closing the loop for CCL, and become the main Circle Line.
