Welcome to my channel! Here you can find additional resources that further illustrate my painting process. Thanks for watching!
An Evening at R&F Handmade Paints
It was such a delight teaching a 3-day workshop at R&F in Kingston. When it comes to my art, my wife and I are a team. As I was painting this particular evening in R&F studio, my wife explains how though I'm a realist painter, my paintings often will develop from an abstract starting point. I see the process of painting as less of a formula, and more of a discovery. A great thanks to R&F Handmade Paints for providing such a wonderful space!

Studying Your Subject: Drawing, Color, & Making Time
มุมมอง 226ปีที่แล้ว
A short bite from my most recent lecture, hosted by Church Street Gallery in West Chester. I talk about what it means to truly study a visual problem, the role of drawing in my work, and how to utilize color. See more of my practice at: dalerobertsencaustic.com
Final Decisions: 2023 Encaustic, Part VI
มุมมอง 654ปีที่แล้ว
See my final adjustments to this painting! I use transfer paper and a heat gun to make some modifications, deciding to add wires and other structures to give the upper half of the piece some weight, pushing downward, containing the abstraction of light and chainlink fence. This is the last video in this series, and I'm grateful to receive some wonderful feedback on them! Thanks for following al...
Using What's Around You: 2023 Encaustic Part V
มุมมอง 1.9Kปีที่แล้ว
The objects and things I have around my studio provides the opportunity for a fun challenge: the challenge of dreaming up a fresh, unconventional way of arriving at a visual solution. This time, I had some spare string and razor blades- notably, some things I decide to use are not necessarily "art tools." I can paint/create lines any number of ways, but this time I chose to use string lain acro...
Differing Heating Solutions: 2023 Encaustic, Part IV
มุมมอง 1.9Kปีที่แล้ว
In my studio today, watch as the paint surface melts on the panel in real time. I'm using two different heating techniques, both extremely hot, to fuse the paint, and I'll explain why and more in this video! Music by: @Bensound.com. Thanks again!
Creating Characters of Paint: 2023 Encaustic, Part III
มุมมอง 596ปีที่แล้ว
Another close-up view of how I'm painting this rusted beam using color and texture. Encaustic paint is so versatile, it can morph into many different characters if you allow it freedom to do so. Here's also a bit on why I choose to paint with encaustic over other mediums. Part IV coming...and studio pup will return! Music by: @Bensound.com.
Interacting with First Layers: 2023 Encaustic, Part II
มุมมอง 992ปีที่แล้ว
Watch up-close how I'm choosing to paint a spacious area, using my heat gun and palette knife to secure some space shapes before(!) I do the broader burn-in. My studio pup also makes his first appearance! Comment below - any questions about my process, or things you'd like to see next as I work on this painting! Music by: @Bensound.com. Thank you!

"Indirect Painting Strategies" Encaustic Demo

Plein Air Silverpoint, "Tree of St. Sebastian"
มุมมอง 3.6K5 ปีที่แล้ว
This rather large metalpoint drawing is done on Italian gesso panel using silver, gold and copper point. It was done over several months in a location near my studio. The tree held captive seemingly pierced by the fence reminded me of St. Sebastion, whose lamentable end can be seen in art from earlier times. The struggle the tree has waged with the fence has left it twisted and scarred...and ye...
Painting on "Early Reconstruction"
มุมมอง 3606 ปีที่แล้ว
I use many methods of application to achieve a desired result. My chosen surroundings, including the I listen to, greatly affects the piece's evolution-all intentional choices which intend to ultimately allow a space for freedom to play. Here, I'm working on "Early Reconstruction," a 36 x 42" encaustic. You can see more of my work at my website: @dalerobertsencaustic.com

Hi nice work . What kind of brushes are you using? Mine get soo hard right after I use it why thanks
I was just thinking that every artist has to get used to drinking cold coffee, when you put the heat gun in your cup. Immediate guffaws! So good. Love the use of the heat gun with the pallet knife, as well.
Spoken from one artist to another! Thanks for writing!
Nothing like getting out in nature and making art. You Really should try it!
Do you apply the ground to a paper glued to the panel, or directly to the panel?
Absolutely amazing.
❤❤❤❣
Pure art. Umm, Paul, you should take a basic art history class or at least catch a National Geographic show about ancient Egyptian art if you can’t read any better than you can write. Oops, didn’t mean to be snarky. Sorry.
Yes you did mean to be snarky. How's your art career going?
Great work as this is not an easy medium, thank you😊
Вы такой классный художник.....
I have warmed my coffee the same way :)
Seemed only sensible! Thanks for the comment!
IS THAT CONSIDERD ART? OR DECORATIF FOR THE WALS? THIS IS A TECHNIC
Encaustic art is fine art. It has a rich history that dates back to before oil paints. It is more archival than modern art forms, most notably the Fayum Funeral Portraits, mummy portraits from the 1st Century A.D. It is believed that what were thought to be frescos in Pompeii are actually encaustic medium. It has also been discovered that the master used encaustic medium along with oil paints. In more modern times Jasper Johns Flag painting circa 1954-55 is an encaustic painting. Yes, encaustic works are art.
I Like IT
Just fantastic !!
Just wow! We can see you build up and carve out glimpses of the past with each layer. The way you show the scrapping back has given me an understanding of what's been missing in my encaustic landscapes. You keep the glow of the piece without the heavy texture of the wax obliterating it. Thank you so much for generously sharing your gift with us.
About 3 years ago I discovered one of your videos. I was so inspired to try encaustic painting. No one to teach me, so I watched your videos to pick up little details and I have made progress because of you. I am thrilled to see more videos.
Thank you for your kind words! Surely more to come!
wunderbar
I love your videos. Please make more:)
i just love silver point, ive never though to tackle it in the wild though. awesome
Interesting subject. Very impressive, for silverpoint this tree drawing is a huge! I've dabbled a bit in this medium last couple of months, nothing bigger than a5 size😉
Beautiful, Dale!
So...is that pen filled with silver or gold??? or is it ink that is the color of silver or gold???
The pen itself is a mechanical pencil with either silver or gold wire held inside. Marks are made by friction, with the result a deposit of the metal transferred to the prepared panel. The result will oxidize and exhibit a patina characteristic of the metal used.
