As I was leaving the hotel to head to the track day, I found a guy in the parking lot admiring all the nice cars. I asked if he was participating and he said he had been displaced due to Irma and had just happened to end up at the hotel outside of Barber. I told him about the event and asked if he wanted to come up and do a few laps. He brought his son and we got to hang out all morning. Great ...
Chin Red and Blue - 9/9/17 - 1:38.7 - First (and best) split session of the weekend
มุมมอง 1377 ปีที่แล้ว
I think partly it was the weather being perfect (turbos like the cool air) and partly it was that my brake pads were on their last legs so this was the session I had the most meat but this was my best session of the weekend. Great weekend all around!
Chin Red - 9/10/17 - Alan riding in the GT3RS
มุมมอง 1107 ปีที่แล้ว
I got a late start on the session and asked the start/finish flagger to put me out behind the GT3RS. He gave me a bit of catch up to do but I eventually ended up on their tail. Brakes were going way downhill at this point. Both front and rear brake pads were at just a couple millimeters. Still... almost always more fun to be the cat than the mouse (especially when the mouse is a gorgeous Porsche).

มุมมอง 1777 ปีที่แล้ว
I skipped over the warm up laps from this session out of respect for Alan's dignity (he needed to get used to the speeds just like the tires and there was some colorful language from the passenger seat). Did one hot lap to show him a normal GTR pace for me and then let a buddy in a GT3RS who had just pitted out behind me pass in the hairpin so we'd have a pretty car to follow. He was fighting p...

An alternative line through the Esses at Road Atlanta - 2014 GTR - Chin Red Group - 4/30/2016

Obviously not preferred. I'd turned traction control off and was working on building speed. Turned in a little late and a little too abruptly. 90 mph backwards downhill into the esses was exciting but not at all my preferred method. At least I stuck the landing... In the end it was a great lesson that came relatively cheaply.

This was my best session yet at Barber. Slowest lap of the session was still better than my best lap the previous day. Some of that was track conditions but most of it was the excellent coaching I received from Jade Buford the day before. Check out the 911GT3R racecar almost chop my nose off at the beginning on lap 4 (I don't think he saw me). I was also impressed with how long I was able to ha...

Awesome driving. Barber is a great track. Can't wait to go back myself.
Darn nice. I wonder about two things. In 10/11 you get way up on the curb. Ive been taught it unsettles the car and slows you down. Second, you stay tight to the line in 15. I was taught to go way wide and come back in. But you look faster than me! Thoughts?
I've driven two weekends, both at Chin and I am amazed that you are able to eat that 2nd curb at 10 and 12. I have seen several videos of cars losing it doing that, but your handling it with no problem. Strong driver in a strong car. I drive a Cayman S so I will continue to just nip at them. My best laps are at 1:52 so far, so very impressive :) Well done.
Just came across this post while surfing..... put a smile on my face. !!!
I was gonna say you didn't eat him then I saw the footage after the pass and I was yeah F car got ate and you were nice about it. Nice Driving.
What car are you driving?
Nissan GTR
Very fast and consistent
I like how @ 7:27 you get run out of track, like somebody is competing for the win at the Monaco grand prix.
nice driving man. what overlay software data do you use
Thanks for the kinds words! This was about my 5th ever track weekend and I was super proud of that pass. Watching it back now I see all the mistakes I made on the lap :) RaceChrono Pro is what I used for the overlay software.
@@rfelkey love it man. I've watched this like 862 times lol. What obd device is plugged in? I have one but it sucks -_-. Ilbe out there in June with a track day organization called jzilla. I'm excited.
You rock at Barber!
Thanks! It's an awesome track. I'll be there again with Chin in a couple weeks. You going to be there soon?
I enjoyed your video - You know how to drive Road ATL . I will try duplicate your lines when I return. Yes, that Miata was dangerous - should have given you ( and others) point by sooner.
It's a fun lap. What car do you drive?
@@rfelkey 2007 Nascar Roush Nationwide Series Car - Crate motor at 360 HP not a high HP NASCAR motor. My fastest lap at RA 1:45 but after watching your great driving lines I think I might pick up a seconds or two. You drive great.
@@derfpoloderf If we're both at a Chin event together I'd be happy to go out right seat with you and/or have you in the passenger seat of the GTR. WOuld be fun to compare notes.
R35PCT yes sounds great. Fred
Is this a stock GTR? Love the HUD btw :) great video
Thanks for the kind words about the video. That's RaceChrono Pro (Android) so the phone is doing all the video processing and overlay. The GTR is not stock. At the point this video was made, it was running about 650hp to the wheels and running on Pilot Super Sports.
@@rfelkey Wow. That's awesome :) Keep up the good content!
Fast car AND fast driver. Always a fun combo to watch. Hoping to break into the high 1:3xx's next time I'm at RA. Awesome lap!
Thanks for the kind words! I've made a few mods for bigger tires in the fronts that should let me take later turn ins without all the slip angle. Looking forward to besting this for sure. Just gotta put in the seat time which has been harder to find this past year with my firstborn turning 1 today :) Hope to see you out there more next year though!
@@rfelkey Congrats on the baby! Mine turns 2 coming up in March, it goes by WAY too fast. And yeah that's one of the changes I'm making also. I was on a square setup but I'm going to go up to 265s in the front so I can manage the under steer a little better. There isn't much to begin with, but more tire can't hurt. That combined with having my aero sorted and I think a 1:39 is possible for me and my car. I only have 360whp so I gotta carry that momentum as best as I can. Haha. Hope to see you out there man!
What mods do you have? I just finished 2 days of hpde at ncm Grand Full in my 17 gtr and yours is WAY quicker out of the hole. You're also carrying some fast speeds especially turn 5, you broke 100 before 6. Good job!
I've done quite alot more since this video was shot but at the time I was FBOs running about 550 HP to the wheels. Turn 5 is one of my favorite corners on the track tho! Just a light brake to set the nose then a full throttle power slide into the braking zone.
That was a very old Ferrari against a new GTR. On my first lap in a current Ferrari I destroyed both of your times. th-cam.com/video/Md2WAoK8iBU/w-d-xo.html
I don't disagree. I had been driving for less than 6 months when I posted this so I was super excited to be passing nice cars. I pretty much only drive Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires here and my current best is 1:31.1. I see you're much faster than that also but then... with slicks and a fully prepared racecar I'd expect you to be.
That would be a very impressive time with street tires. Congrats on the great driving.
Thanks for this. Out of all the stuff out there I'm finding it the most helpful on learning the track. Heading there in a few weeks (with Chin) for the first time. Must say you got some fine laps there. What you driving?
Thanks for the kind words. This was done in my Nissan GTR on NT01 tires running a tune with about 620whp. It's blue with a big Godzilla #35 on the side so I'm hard to miss. If we're ever at the track together definitely come say hello. Hope to see you there soon!
Nissan GTR on NT01 tires running a tune with about 620whp --- LOL well that certainly does explain some things! The GTR is simply amazing. I'll be at Barber on the 8th of April.
That's movin' along IMO - enjoyed the vid thanks for posting. Anyone else got some Red Group full session vids from Chin, Rezoom, Just Track it etc from Barber? Help keep the winter blues at bay? Just two comments: The 911 entering the track is out of order. Full stop. He should know better. I wish we could have less advertising and more driving talk in driver meetings. Turns 15 and 16: Just my thoughts and not a criticism at all of anyone; I try to get round that section and keep tight(ish) (away from the clag, and travel less distance) but the challenge is keeping far enough right to get a good run through 16 and down the straight. I can keep it tighter in my left foot braking flappy paddle car, it all gets a bit hectic with the H' shift three peddle car and I can't help running wider.
Agree about the 911. I honestly don't think he saw me and that is a problem. I also agree about 15 and 16. I take that corner a bit differently now and agree that keeping tighter is better but doing it while trying to keep the minimum speed up is what makes it difficult. You can't afford to coast up to 15 cause you lose too much time, but try and take the actual corner too fast and you blow getting back right to setup for the front straight. Lately I've started taking a little of the inside curbing (left side) going onto the front straight and it seems to help turn the car. I'll try and find and post some other full session videos. Already ready for Barber again in February!
For the 911, I think the flag station at turn 2 should radio the start line flagger and get him blag flagged for the session for diving across the track. As Barber is in three sections, I think a merging driver should stay in the extreme left section all round turn 2. It happened to me where an Instructor nearly hit me in the same manner. I was right on someones backside so the entering car only saw the first car and nearly clobbered me. Don't know if you watched my vid where I was stuck behind the Lambo, but following that the Chinsters invited him to drive in the novice group for a session. Another pro driver. He got with the program after that. Yeah, I give the inside curb at 16 a good wollop in the street car if I can get back to the right and turning left in time. Of course, sometimes I'm so wide and miss the apex by so much I have to buy a ticket to get back in ;-) I saw a Ligier entered for a few Barber events but unfortunately missed driving with the car. You got anything with the Ligier?
Really cool!
You look great. Super good execution of turns throughout the track! You had a lot of traffic to navigate.
derfpoloderf thanks! Look me up the next time we're at the track together. Always fun to meet another track junkie!
I like your line! Is that the line you worked on whenJade helped you?
Yes. There are a few tricks to this that Jade does a better job of explaining than I do but my data doesn't show you enough to show how he tweaked several of my brakepoints etc.
I really enjoyed watching you run the course! I also have a GTR and only live a couple of hours away and would love gaining some expert advice while putting my R35 through the paces!
Bama Dave this was really early on in my driving and I Haven't made it to NOLA since then. I'm actually in Montgomery so go to Barber and Road Atlanta a lot more often than NOLA. May try and do NOLA again this fall but would be happy to offer any help I can if we end up at the same event.
Just had to rewatch this video. So much fun and a complete yin-yang situation for cars. Both you guys are great drivers and i really miss Barber now!
Danny's a great driver... I just have a great car :) I'll most likely be at Barber in February with Chin. Not sure if I'll take the GTR or the BRZ for that (experimenting with momentum cars now also). Hope to see you there!
Awesome man! BRZ is a great momentum car. If you need setup tips Scott or myself can help as we both owned one and tracked the crap out of ours. Scott eventually sold his BRZ to Chin and that's the car you've probably seen. I'm sure you'll enjoy the running costs which will probably be a fraction of the GT-R.
It's absolutely ridiculous how much cheaper the BRZ is to run. I can basically buy all 4 tires for the cost of 1 GTR tire and will save enough on gas alone over the course of 2 - 3 weekends to afford those tires. That doesn't even take the brakes into account. Crazy!
The corner at pit in, you are killing momentum there, I consistently go through there at 54-55 mph in a slower car than yours. Thats me at 18:29, you pass me on the front stretch. My car is stock, I am still learning the car. Your car moves good, I think you can get faster by being smoother, you spend a lot of time waiting for the car to settle or "fix it" after you over cook corner entry.
Given that my car weighs ~4250 with me in it I can almost guarantee that your slower car is also much lighter than mine. I'm not sure how realistic (or valuable) it is for me to try and carry too much more speed through the throw-away corner at pit-in. I've been working on carrying more speed onto the front straight corner. That being said, your comments are pretty spot on with what I've been trying to work on lately. I've gotten the leaky turbos fixed and trying to get smoother on not "over cooking" corner entry. Hope to see you out there again soon!
I clicked to check out your videos... looks like this is you from the same session: Stock brakes and suspension 2003 Corvette Z06, bolt on engine mods 390rwhp. Tires are 305/660/18 Pirelli race takeoffs. Best lap 1:42.6 Given that you were on slicks for this video it's also worth noting that I was on the street tires I drove to the track for this session. Definitely not as sticky going through the corners on those tires.
What car are you in? A mod list is needed. Looks great and very fun
2014 GTR. Had a little work done to it before this so was at about 550 whp on NT01s and a little aero.
Outstanding!!!!!
how do you display speed, throttle, rpm etc? It makes the video much more engaging to see all of that information
This video was done using RaceChrono Pro on my Samsung phone. The phone was the camera and I use an external GPS (Vbox Sport) and an OBD2 sensor to do the throttle position and RPM etc
Looking good! Would have been a bit faster if you didn't get held up through 12
I'm a BIG fan of EARLY apexing there...that was big Sir! Nice meeting you - briefly. All the best.
+CrackerLS2 Not sure why it didn't publish my comment the last time. Fair enough on the 911 GT3R (from what Jade said, that car should be a 1:24ish car with a good driver due to the gearing etc). He certainly blew my doors off most of the day. I'd point out that I'm just on R-Comps versus slicks but I think it really was the power-to-weight + the gearing that made the biggest difference. I'll look forward to seeing you at RA. I've gotten a 1:34.3 there recently and I want to get into the 1:32s this coming weekend. I will continue to look at T16. I've tried both ways and lately think not pinching so I carry as much rolling speed as I can, but also taking the turn tight to add as little distance to the lap is fastest. I definitely know that is an area I can continue to work on so will continue to experiment. What car did you do the 1:28 at Barber in? I saw the 914 videos looked like low 1:40s (which is great for that car).
+R35PCT My DSR did a 1:28.7; I've never driven the 914 at Barber or RA; just working the bugs out for the first time after building the car over the last year. It will be quick but I'm not trying to set any records - just stay on track, tweak things we can control and stay out of everyone else's way! ;-)
+CrackerLS2 super quick in the DSR. Guess I missed those videos. Two very different cars between the GTR and DSR. Mine is just a little heavier ;)
+R35PCT Rueben - You try to compare cars too much - unless they're a spec-class, performance is all over the board. Just work on your car, your lines, your time - anyone else does not matter (there can always be an excuse or explanation either way). Correct? For instance: My car only has 78 lbs of torque...I would believe your GTR has multiples of that - see? ;-) You will find that drivers generally suck to average at best - its not the "Ferrari's" fault its owner is a poser...just an example. To be at the pointy end among skilled drivers it takes time (to do it safely)...patience.
+CrackerLS2 Definitely agree on not trying to compare cars too much and that it takes time to be a fast driver and do it safely. We all sort of invite that when we say things like my best time was x:xx.x at Barber. The implication is that if one of us did it faster we're a better driver, but to your point, there are so many differences between cars it's hard to make those comparisons. Alan Kindall did low 1:40s all weekend long in his Ariel Atom and I'm quite confident it took more (or at least different) skill for him to do those times in that car than me to do 1:36.8 in the GTR. The fastest time at Barber I could find in a highly modified (900whp, aero, suspension, BBK, 335 square tires etc) GTR done by a pro driver (Leh Keen) was 1:34.6 so I'm sort of using that as my benchmark for progress in my car but your point about making comparisons between cars is well taken.
+R35PCT Don't get me wrong...your time is strong, your skill is good, your car is really working well though too. I don't see many holes in your approach, again, you are doing well. Just stay away from 3 wide, double passing at T9... ;-) See you in a couple weeks. Tony H.
Rueben - You are showing good improvement....JFYI - The Cup Cars ususally take about 2-3 laps to get their tire temps up - those are a whole "nother ball game. I'll see you at RA in a couple weeks...we're breaking in and sorting a new car. A "lowly" Porsche 914...I'll be sure to be on the lookout to "point you by"! ;-) PS: You are leaving a little time at T16 - enter track out and don't pinch - it will allow you to get back to the right for T17 with much less drama. Your entry in the MT and Esses is very good...good driving. My PB at Barber is 1:28 - ;-)
Danny that dude can drive his ass off!:great TH-cam video...
Good response and I can respect that...have a good day.
I'm going to add this here because another driver watched the video and pointed out how dangerous this pass could potentially have been. My comment below is in response to a private comment he posted on the video. I do understand where you are coming from and actually did consider waving off the point by. I didn't in this case because of the circumstances and knowing that the "risky" car to me (the Porsche on the inside) was an instructor that I trusted. I'm generally at 150-155 going over that hill so even though I rounded up to 140 in the title, I was a good 10-20 miles slower than normal there and completely under control. The way it actually went, the Mustang was slowing way down to allow the lotus by and was already 5 cars behind me when I realized the instructor in the Porsche was hanging on my right rear wheel well and slid over to give him some room. I wasn't tracking out there by necessity. Once I'm past the mustang, I'm in complete control because the Porsche can obviously see the line I'm taking and can't/won't turn in until I do and he's just going to tuck in behind my bumper at that point. All of the above being said, I do get your point and wouldn't want just anyone to decide that move was "smart" in every situation.
Bone head move for a "DE" sir (I presume you're a "sir")...taking simultaneous point bye's at that point on the track and yet passing both cars at the same time should have gotten you BLACK flagged. It showed at the very least a "momentary lapse in judgement" on your part to take the pass - at that point, in that situation. I wouldn't "parade this out here as something cool"...rather, I'd share it for the sake of showing others what not to do. Wasn't this also the same car you were stating was on old-er tires? The fact you had to track out after and through T9 is dangerous enough with all the debris and roll-ups out there. If the "instructor" pointed you by and yet didn't release you after the pass, as you are stating....well, he isn't smart either! In short, make better decisions (this was the BLUE group?) no the track. For the record sake...I instruct for many track day organizations - including CHIN (FWIW).
Some nice laps! even with the squealing tires! thanks for the footage of the Cayman!
Yeah... they were OEM runflats to begin with and they were so corded at the end of the weekend that the front left was losing air pressure on the drive home.
And you wheel that Cayman like a pro! I was glad to have some footage of the GTR from your video so am happy I was able return the favor.
Wow a 1:34 is hauling ass with the run flats! Even went a little hot into T3 and still managed an excellent time. With some NT01's i'd expect to see another 1-2 seconds. Some day you're going to have to give me a ride. :-)
+Ryan Graf Come on out April 30 - May 1 and we'll definitely hook up a ride. Would be fun to do a few turns with you in the Miata as well! And yeah... Turn 3 was giving me fits all weekend. Before the aero I'd slow down more into the corner at 1 but then full throttle up the hill. I was working on carrying more speed through the corner at one but then couldn't get my rhythm back on throttle/brake point into 3. Definitely some time to pick up there!
Really nice laps! Especially with street tires. You are gonna love the R compound tires. Car has very impressive acceleration!! Hope to see you at Road Atlanta in February!
Congrats! I'm sure that ambient temp was great for the car too. Very impressive for one year in!
+Ryan Graf It was an absolutely beautiful weekend! I was especially pleased to get there on street tires. I can't wait to get the wider fenders and run 345x19 or at least 315x19 square slicks. If I could get more grip through 12 and the carousel between 3 and 4 I could pick up quite a lot of time! Hope you've been doing well and that I'll see you at another event soon!
+R35PCT Should be back out soon! M3 was down for repairs and i built a Miata as well in the mean time. I've been taking my cars to Sebring apparently so i can break them - Sebring is GREAT for that! ;-)
+Ryan Graf Then maybe I'm lucky Sebring is so far away! Barber always does for my tires what Road Atlanta does for my brakes and that's enough expenses for me without other repairs. Probably going to do Road Atlanta in February with Chin as my next event so maybe I'll see you there.
impressive driving!
Jansen Ng Thanks. Appreciate the feedback!
not sure why part was struck out - trying again - I assume that you realize that you are behind a 2000 or 2001 F360 CH Ferrari - not an F430 much less an F458 Ferrari. The F360s are all 14-15 years old - When they were new they had about 100 - 200 less HP than the GTR new - the differential is probably bigger now. The F360 weighs about 2.800 lbs empty - about 3,000 lbs with fuel. In the Ferrari race hat followed - one of the F360s ran laps in the 1:34s and the one in second place ran consistent 1:35s. And IMHO they are pretty good looking too. The 458 was running about 1:20 laps... ) but I love the GTR too - Its a cool car
Ken Marlin I was timing the 458 race leader Saturday night at 1:30 flat in the early laps and a 1:34 - 1:35 as the race progressed and his lead built. (far from a 1:20 but still an awesome time from my perspective) The middle of the pack Ferraris that I timed were mostly running 1:40 - 1:45. I did realize it was an older Ferrari on that particular lap (I'll find and post some of the other passes later.. there were several over the weekend, most of them just had a lot less build up). The GTR (in my case) is about 4,000 lbs wet (I have a lot of stereo and sound deadening in it, plus a roll cage etc) and 4,200 with me in it. So I'm giving up a lot more weight, not to mention running on street tires. All of this as compared to a much lighter Ferrari with what has to have been a much more experienced driver on racing slicks. Thanks for the kind words! I was pretty pleased with my times over the weekend.... especially since I've only been doing track days for about 6 months now. It's all good fun and I was pleased to have some faster traffic out there to drive with. It's always more exciting to have some fast cars on the track with you.
R35PCT www.challengeclubracing.com/results_road_atl_2015.html 1:29 best lap of the weekend from a 430
R35PCT sorry... 1:29 best lap of the weekend from a Ferrari in the race.. and it happened to be a 430
+Ken Marlin You may not have noticed (it takes a trained eye), but that was a special lightweight version of the 360 - it had the rearview mirror removed. LOL!
GTR is a Great car no question. And pretty. And you look like you were driving it well. and the GTR probably is about 800 lbs heavier than that Ferrari - and 1:36.6 is a great lap time at RA - congratulations! (I own one of those Ferraris - not that one -and I own a Nissan. I assume that you realize that you are behind a 2000 or 2001 F360 CH Ferrari - not an F430 much less an F458 Ferrari. The F360s are all 14-15 years old - When they were new they had about 100 - 200 less HP than the GTR new - the differential is probably bigger now. The F360 weighs about 2.800 lbs empty - about 3,000 lbs with fuel. In the Ferrari race hat followed - one of the F360s ran laps in the --1:34--s and the one in second place ran consistent --1:35--s. And IMHO they are pretty good looking too. - The 458 was running about 1:20 laps... ) but I love the GTR too - Its a cool car
Awesome! LOL dude you were working for that ;-)
Doug Narby actually now that I watch more of it, it's really interesting how much faster you are than him in some places where you didn't seem to be working so hard. very different cars...
Doug Narby Yeah... I think he thought he'd pull away from me in the corners but he really wasn't able to. And I'm totally eating him up in the straights. I would've thought he power to weight ratio (that car probably only weighs 2500 pounds) would've kept him faster than me there also but the GTR is a phenomenal car.
R35PCT I also thought it was neat that I got my best lap of the weekend after passing him so I can sorta compare what speeds I was carrying with him in front of me versus what I was able to do solo and see where I was able to go full throttle etc.
Is this Harry's Lap timer with a blue tooth ODB?
DocGTO It's RaceChrono on an Android with a Bluetooth OBD and a GoPro facing out the back. RaceRender did the overlays
I noticed you slowed down pretty good as I was coming up. I definitely love how responsive the GTR is to trail braking. I can get the backend around and back onto power sooner if I hit it right (plus it is fun). Hope you're having a good week and looking forward to seeing you and doing it all again in Braselton next weekend!
Most definitely didn't want to tangle with the GT-R through the kink! ( @ 19:39) It was fun watching you trail brake through a few corners when i was behind you. The GT-R can really twerk it's way through a corner. Look forward to seeing you out there again soon.
From the Silver GTR, this was probably my most interesting session in the last 5 years. Really evenly matched, great fun.
I had a blast also. Always great to end up paired with someone who makes you stay that focused through the entire session. Thanks for the tips on areas to tweak my line afterwards as well. Hope to see you at another event soon!
Nice driving, especially in the later sessions! I was the one in the black E36 M3... had to come off early because of wheel stud issues (could feel vibration progressively getting worse). It was great talking to you at the end of the day!
Thanks for posting this. I learned a lot from watching it!
Wow making some big improvements! 1:38 is seriously moving. Look forward to seeing you out there next season.
Thanks man! Just saw this. Hope to see you out there soon!
