A Bad Half Refret Made Good
In this video we have a guitar that suffered some bad DIY work. It was recently purchased and then brought to me because of some fret buzz. What I found was some of the fret had been replaced and the work was not done well at all. A refret was beyond the owner's budget, so here is my method to get this back to playing the way it should.

1972 Gibson Dove Custom, Neck Reset and Refret.
มุมมอง 27514 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video I go through the process of a neck reset and refret on this 1972 Dove custom. One major surprise I had on the way. The dovetail joint was straight. I know that such joints are out there, I was just surprised to find it on this guitar. It makes for a difficult time getting the neck off, as well as trying to fir it back on the guitar.
Re-Fixing a D.I.Y. Peghead Break
มุมมอง 73021 วันที่ผ่านมา
This guitar was once repaired by it's owner. The owner did not remember what glue he used, but it certainly was not wood glue. Heat, moisture, nothing was cleaning the break. T88 epoxy works very well in these types of situations. However, if you have a clean unpolluted break, wood glue is a better option. Wood glue will not reliably bond non-wood surfaces. Splints and some touch up to follow. ...
How to Fix a Ding in Binding
มุมมอง 24328 วันที่ผ่านมา
In this video I go through the process of repairing a ding in the fingerboard binding of a Les Paul. This guitar had fallen off it's strap and into a stand. It's not that difficult to do, but some of the glues and chemicals involved can cause damage to other area of the guitar. I don't make these videos as tutorials, so if you are watching for learning purposes, always practice on something oth...
Tru OIl Neck Conversion, With Color and Re-Shaping
มุมมอง 1.6K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Another way to go about modifying your neck finish to have Tru Oil. It's a somewhat simple process. Other's have their own way, this is how I do it. The idea was to replace a worn out neck with another, but the replacement needed a little work to get the feel of the original.
1935 Martin D 28, Correcting Relief, and Making a Proper Saddle
มุมมอง 2383 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had a 1935 Martin come in that was not playinfg as well as it should. It does not have an adjustable truss rod, and this is also the first full year after bar frets were used. Here are the steps I went through to get the guitar back to 100%.

The symptoms, the cause, and 2 non-invasive options to fix your jack on a telecaster. There are other ways to go about resolving this issue, but they involve altering the guitar.
(Part 2) 1959 ES 335 Minor Binding Repair, Refret
มุมมอง 3394 หลายเดือนก่อน
Second part to working on this ES 335 from 1959. This guitar needed a refret badly. Minor cosmetic issues with the binding are taken care of, as well as aging a replacement Tone Pros AVR2 bridge. Check out part one if you haven't seen it yet. th-cam.com/video/N-SLtsHtHHs/w-d-xo.html
(Part 1) 1959 ES 335 Correcting Bridge Placement, Refret, etc..
มุมมอง 7404 หลายเดือนก่อน
Part 1 of a repair job to this 1959 ES 335. At some point in this guitar's life, it was owned by Neil Schon of the band Journey. It currently resides in Minnesota with it's new owner. Over the year some improper work has been done to this guitar. In this video I correct where the bridge is locate, with minor finish touch up. More elaborate work could have been done, but by request of the owner,...
Mill City Lutherie In the Wild, With Self Evident Part 2
มุมมอง 1604 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a compilation of live clips. Conrad Mach of the band Self Evident playing his Hennepin model guitar at Zhora in Minneapolis on April 26th 2024. The only mic is the one on my camera. The Hennepin is a slab body, set neck style guitar, reminiscent of a Les Paul. Lighter in weight due to a flat top. Completely handmade in Minneapolis Music by www.self-evident.net/ selfevident.bandcamp.com/...
Partial Refret
มุมมอง 1915 หลายเดือนก่อน
A somewhat common option when it comes to worn frets. If only a certain number are worn, just replace those. The nut will need replacing at the same time. This video demonstrates the process.
1965 Gibson Country Western Partial Restoration
มุมมอง 3895 หลายเดือนก่อน
A customer brought in his Grandpa's guitar to have work done on it. Video includes bridge re-glue, new bridge plate, refet, and other minor maintenance. This guitar is well played, but luckily not in need of a neck reset or and major finish work.
Jeff Beck Body Mod, with aging.
มุมมอง 4335 หลายเดือนก่อน
Pretty simple procedure on this one. But I have added a wood aging technique per request of the customer. If you attempt this on your own, and the aging goes to far, simply sand back the wood a little to get a lighter result.

Yes but the end of the fingerboard it looks a bit bent
Hey I have a question, is the sustainiac pickup noisless? I feel like mine was noisless but im not shure, I tried a battery mod and I may have fried something now it is noisi with distortion compared to my bridge...
They eat batteries really fast, and when voltage is low can become quirky . Try a new 9 volt. If that doesn't work there's tons of info on the Sustainiac website.
@@MillCityLutherie I did something stupid I tried to put a power bank inside my guitar with a step up converter but the step up converter turned out to to be not that stable and when I measured it it read 10v instead of 9... ever since there is noise in the sustainiac when I use it as a pickup not as a sustainer.... I dont know where to send this to get fixed... I fear I fried something...
😃👍👍
Another great video! Highly informative, and very nice work! The one issue I can see when building this setup, is that if you have any issues with your volume or tone pot, you have to dig under all the sustainiac wiring. But hopefully that's a non issue for a while. Thanks for all the videos and work you show us!!
That's why I recommend a full rewire anytime I do this. The pots for the magnetic pickups were replaced at the same time.
@@MillCityLutherie thanks for the information, always looking forward to your next videos. Thanks for showing us 👍👍
Speed bumps! Dang that's crazy. Another great video, and awesome cat, love it! Looks a lot like my cat who passed back in May, he was 19.
Nice cat!
And nice work!
Nice work! Adam did a lot of work on my ‘74 Strat. Well pleased with what he did for me. Very knowledgeable and a great guy. Cute kitty kat too.
That's pretty sad, it's a really nice guitar. They did a partial and used the wrong fret wire. And the fret ends are pretty buggered. I do fret work a lot like you, I swear by long straight edges, I rarely use a rocker. Nice work, that guitar is a keeper.
Another amazing job Adam. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video! It comes at the right time. Question did you have to make adjustments on the sustainiac pre-amp? I have a Schecter with a sustainiac. I sent it out to have some work done on it. But when I got the guitar back the response of the sustainiac was not the same. It seem to be loader then what it was and over powered the note when I played it. I searched the internet and found the manuel for my guitar. there are 3 small knobs where can make adjustments on the sustaniac board . I am hoping to get it back to the factory default. It also states in the manuel that the pick up hight adjustment also plays apart in the sustainiac response. I may be interested in some work from you :)
The batteries run out fast on these. Check that first. Low voltage gives off weird symptoms. After that Sustainiac has some instructions on their site for how to adjust the trim pots to your liking.
Looked this up to see if I could DIY it… I’m so in over my head
That was great!. Nice work
As a luthier and a cat owner, i say: just subscribed!!!!
Exceptional work! Also, big fan of the Sustainiac here. Like any tool, they can be overused (just like the whammy bar), but with proper judgment, they're amazing.
How much do you charge for a job like that?
I thought the cost was very fair, even more so after seeing the amount of work that went into this. Luckily I bought this guitar inexpensively enough to absorb the cost of the neck set and re-fret, considering its value. But, buying a guitar without playing it first is always a risk. In the 60's and 70's, they only made around 300 Doves per year.
Another great video Adam. Love your fret clamp. Beautiful old Gibson!
With a recessed FR, is it possible to raise the bridge a bit so my picking hand rests more similar to a traditional Strat tremolo?
You would have to shim the neck.
Are those the original foam cutters or did you order the ones they sell specifically for guitar repairs, now?
Isn't that crazy that they had enough sales of the normal foam cutters that they developed a tool specifically for the guitar community? That's a company paying attention to its customers. Someone I wouldn't mind giving my money to 👍
I just put the old nut back on my guitar to try and isolate a ringing issue. I didn't realize how much I was compensating for it being too low by raising the ABR1. When I put the new nut back on, it was very apparent. Now sure how I missed it before now. I dropped the bridge by 1/8"(3.1mm) or more. It's surprising just how high it was in order to compensate for low Slots.
Wow! Nice guitar!
Excellent work on this, Adam! It is really cool to see the process of your craftsmanship, especially on my own guitar. There is no doubt in my mind that this plays and sounds even better now than when it left Kalamazoo 50+ years ago!
Dove is my absolute fav line of guitars from Gibson. Recently I checked out one of the newer (2023) builds and it sounded OK but older models do sound better. Anyway, awesome job fixing it up! Looks and sounds great. PS: you have the best intro on YT, Adam! Hehe
R.D.J. repair and restore guitars now ?????
Nice repair. That color did match pretty darn well. If the break had not already been epoxied before. Would you still have gone with epoxy yourself? Or would you have opted for a Titebond style glue?
If it's the first break I'd use titebond. I posted an Epiphone video about a year ago, same break but wood glue all around because it was clean and fit together well.
@@MillCityLutherie That's what l figured. Thanks. Pretty sure l watched that one too!
Great work. BTW, I just noticed, I think you and I both have the same workbench carpet.
Great repair. Congrats and thanks for the video.
I want to see more of the cat!
The cat's playing reminds me of Thelonious Monk.
Felinious Monk
Nice work...rang my bell
Nicely done, very informative
Great work!!!
Nice work. Some odd editing repeats around minute 11.
Amazing work Adam!
Hey!!! put the cat back on!!! 😁
Can you also fix autism
Master🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for making this video, this is fantastic! Where did you get the tools used to get the electronics back into place?
I don't remember specifically. Sometimes just a surplus store.
Nice job Millhouse I like the use of CA glue in the repair
best acoustic money can buy cheers!
In my case the jack plate fell out b/c the bolt was so loose. I got it tightened back on, but I'm noticing the washer mine has is not a lock washer. This electro socket looks so much better as far as stability. I don't know why Fender wouldn't just use those.
Thanks for this helpful video. One question, (at 3:05 min) where do you get that cool jack holding tool?
Really nice job on this guitar. I think 1985 was the first year Martin used an adjustable truss rod. I think this is actually a HD 35, since it has a three piece back.
Nice job. We are doing a build with a Sustainiac setup right now and this video is helpful, thanks!
I would get this guy to work on my guitar. If you want it done right and not half ass.
Did you get that decal through Taylor? Thanks
Thank you for the video! What drill bit size did you use to drill the rod stud holes?
The best part for me: the Dremel as a router with the template 👍👍👍. If had known this before I could have saved the money for an extra router fiddling around without a template...
Спасибо большое Thanks a lot
Some questions, what is on the frets that is sizzling with the heat, and what kind of glue is that. Also is it normal to use that much of it?
This is my guitar and Adam did a fantastic job with the new pickguard, along with installing new pickups and electronics and setting the guitar up very well. Highly recommended!
