MIKE MUNROW'S RETRO
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 พ.ย. 2021
Hi, it's me again, formerly known here at TH-cam simply as MUNROWS RETRO. I'm back and hope this time around I am here to stay! I started out as a big playlist maker on TH-cam back in 2012 when I accidentally discovered I was also good at making music videos. Since then I've progressed to also making short films and visual essays with musical or ambient background, but hope to one day actually do some filming and make a real movie. I've been lurking around at Vimeo and Dailymotion for the last several years as MUNROW'S RETRO (note the apostrophe in MUNROW'S, I couldn't get one for my brand name on here last time for some reason) but hope to make a go of it again on TH-cam ... where it all began so long ago!
Herb Alpert - Rise (1979), Featuring Jayne Mansfield and Naomi Watts
Another huge hit from 1979, possibly the most popular and memorable pop jazz instrumental hit (and funk/disco hit) of the 1970s, bigger than "Shaker Song" by Spyro Gyra (only
#90 in 1978? You have got to be kidding!) or "Feel So Good" by Chuck Mangione which reached #4 in 1977. There were many requests for "Rise" at the most popular nightclub in town where I DJ'd for 7 long years, especially the bartenders who wanted to keep the customers drunk and horny. This was Herb Alpert's first #1 hit since "This Guy's In Love With You" back in 1968 (another big favorite of mine, and there is a video I made for it here on TH-cam). "Rise," as it turned out, was a real surprise, peaking on Billboard's Hot 100 on October 20, 1979, and remaining at that position for two weeks! It also reached #1 on the Cash Box Top 100 for two weeks on October 27. I can still remember buying the 7 minutes 36 seconds single in summer '79 at Cavages, which is what you are hearing. And like the Bolero theme in the film "10" in 1979, there was no doubt in anyone's mind what this song was really all about. So, in the spirit of the music, try not to enjoy this video TOO MUCH!

มุมมอง 14721 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This was my first music video created for a TH-cam audience after I returned on November 11, 2021. It is rare indeed when I find myself declaring a song as my top favorite for a given year. Usually there are at least three or four competing for the position in my mind in any given year, and often from pivotal years like 1968 or 1972 or 1979 there are far too many to bestow such an honor. Howeve...
Big Electric Cat - Cat People (Putting Out Fire) (1997), starring Nastassja Kinski
มุมมอง 19914 วันที่ผ่านมา
This is my second video featuring the music of Big Electric Cat, the first one being "Orchid Dreaming." From Vampire Themes (1997), this is their cover of "Cat People (Putting Out Fire)," originally recorded by David Bowie for the 1982 film, Cat People. While most of the footage is from Cat People, I felt I could at least cinematically give tribute to David Bowie using some scenes from another ...
David Bowie - Changes (1972, 1975)
มุมมอง 17021 วันที่ผ่านมา
From the Hunky Dory album (1971). This song actually debuted as a single TWICE in the United States: first in April 1972 and again appearing in November 1974 following the success of the live LP, David Live, released in September 1974. I remember hearing the song on the radio during both periods ... quite fondly. The live album would become such a smash in America that the live track of "Change...
Neil Sedaka - Angel Eyes (1961)

This video always got blocked worldwide on my previous channel until January 2019, although it was made in 2017. From his 1961 LP, Circulate, this is Neil Sedaka's version of "Angel Eyes" ... a 1946 popular jazz standard composed by Matt Dennis and Earl Brent. A powerful rendition by Mr. Sedaka, it would have worked quite well as a film noir theme. And so, it is applied in this video. Don't Bot...

Hey .. lookin' for Mr. Goodbar? Guess they were lookin' back in the Roaring 20's too! My fav Boz Scaggs tune, legendary pop dance hit Lowdown gets the silent treatment in this vintage montage. This one I'd definitely put on my Top Ten best disco hits ... it got a lot of requests back when I was doing the DJ thing, about as often as Gino Vannelli and Billy Joel songs were. So, hang up those disc...
Syndicate Of Sound - Little Girl (1966)
มุมมอง 32221 วันที่ผ่านมา
Originally published at TH-cam on April 27, 2014. The Syndicate of Sound, along with other garage bands like Count Five and Music Machine, helped pave the way for the psychedelic sound in 1966. Their hit single, "Little Girl," reached #8 on the Top Ten in June of that year. This video tributes the song, the group, and the times of a true 60's rock classic.
The Monkees - (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone (1966)
มุมมอง 24321 วันที่ผ่านมา
Originally published at TH-cam on January 29, 2015. More mindless psychedelic fun coming your way, this time from the famous TV rock band, The Monkees. "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" was probably one of the best songs the group ever did, becoming a very popular surprise hit for the psychedelic crowd. As the B-side of the #1 hit "I'm A Believer," it charted in its own right at #20 on Billboard ...
Focus - Hocus Pocus (1973)
มุมมอง 23621 วันที่ผ่านมา
Originally released in Europe in 1971, "Hocus Pocus" failed to chart. Focus re-recorded a faster version in late 1972 and re-released the single in Europe as well as the United States and Canada while conducting three North American tours with Yes, Frank Zappa, and Gentle Giant. It was with a major BANG that the instrumental rock hit appeared seemingly out of nowhere on North American charts on...

The first track from the CD, Vampire Themes. A tribute the late, great actor Christopher Lee who appeared in so many roles and in so many films. Welcome TH-cam dinner audience, here's a fine jazz melody to keep your feet moving while you munch away on your hors d'oeuvres. WoW!! I didn't know Jayne Mansfield could do that!😳😍😍😍
When I had recently heard that song, I thought she was singing Mission Lane and that wasn't it. When I heard it a second time and thought is was Mountain Lane and that wasn't it. I just recently chuck if was Miss Shadow Lane and I was close but no cigar there. The song appeared to be Miss Chatelain and tested it on TH-cam and that was it. Mystery solved.
One of the best songs that I ever heard of!!
Thank You. SEAN DHONNCHAIDH
Gone down a Thomas Dolby rabbit hole this evening ❤❤❤
I hope it was an enjoyable journey.
Can you identify the movies or shows these clips came from? I would like to watch...I found the Ashley Judd movie and I really enjoyed it.I would have never found it if not for this video. I also love this song!!
Thanks, Lisa! Glad you enjoyed the song and video too! The Ashley Judd films are Come Early Morning (which I also used for my video, "Magnet and Steel" by Walter Egan) and The Passion of Darkly Noon (which I also used for The Who "Behind Blue Eyes" and "The Acid Queen" and "Underture" from Tommy). The Naomi Watts films are, of course, Mulholland Drive, one of the best films ever made by the best film director in modern history, David Lynch, the movie Adore (also known as Adoration and Perfect Mothers), and unfortunately, I forgot the last film and it will take forever to track it down on my hard drive. I wish I could have done two thumbnails as this is Naomi's video as much as it is Ashley's. I think both are the greatest actresses of the 21st Century and Ashley I have been following since the 1990s. I was glad David Lynch finally found a role for her in Twin Peaks: The Return. She should have been in one of his other films I think; I don't know how she got overlooked for so long.
@@mikemunrowsretro8973 Thank you so much I also found it interesting that u stated Summer 1982 was one of the slowest turnover of Top 40 singles and albums in US music history. Any idea why that was? Thx again
@@lisabenneett4735 Hi Lisa! Partly to the death of disco in 1980 and the existing rock bands from the 70's, although putting out newer material, began to sound stale. Blondie was a big driving force, but the album they put out in '82 did horribly, and it was not a very good album. Many of the bands and artists that did not fare so well in '82, did exceptionally well later in the 80's. Why rock got stale? Bad timing, bad luck. But it is bound to happen from time to time. Thankfully, MTV came along and pulled everything back together when they went nationwide in September.
❤❤❤
God I’ve loved this song since I was a little girl listening to it over and over on the stereo while playing with my Barbie and Ken dolls. Adore Eric Burdon. What a voice! What a face.

Well done video!
Thanks so much! I'd really like to do more from Tommy, and this was the third, but the second video I did, "Underture," which is 10 minutes and 19 seconds, got age-restricted here, but I think is still viewable on Vimeo. It got restricted here at YT over a comedy scene appearing at the end which came from Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) ... the one where Naomi Watts (Janey E) and Kyle MacLachlan (Dougie) are in bed and Janey E goes nuts. So, you watch almost ten minutes of a video that is otherwise okay, but at the end the last 13 seconds, sorry Mike, but we have rules. There was a time on TH-cam when ANYTHING that director David Lynch filmed was allowed, nudity or not. Not anymore. The thing is far funnier than erotic. All it takes is a few seconds of "bad" content and a great video is age restricted. I don't like putting up age restricted stuff anyway because, once the subscribers have seen it, it seems to be hidden from the general audience. That wasn't true back in the Teens, but it seems to be the case now. For that matter, once the channel audience sees a video ... any video ... it seems to die, unless some good Samaritan comes along and gives it a good shove upwards.
Finally a version with Robin Trower mixed fairly. Ya can actually hear Robin play.

Wow!! Jimi Hendrix... so special that he's still alive! Mike, I'm sorry to communicate here, I had no other way, I left Vimeo, they blocked, for political reasons, those from Europe, I couldn't see the work of the other members nor could anyone see me in this case... Neither did the internal messages work so I tell you here. I really appreciate you creating a playlist with my work but please, could you change the first video and put another one? The first one that appears doesn't define my work, it's just poetry and guitar. Thank you so much!!!
🎉
😅
Hi Mora! I guess Jimi will always be alive in a sense, his music and the influence of his music on later artists anyway! He was very innovative, of those who died young starting 1969, I think he had the greatest chance of remaining relevant in the future and in our time. Blues and jazz never really go out and are reused in other formats, even today. I removed that first video as you asked; but I thought it important because you are a poet as well. Poetry is no small thing; I wrote it and published it for 25 years. All my playlists are set to "most popular" so the video on top is always the one that got the most views. I'm sorry to hear about what happened on Vimeo. They are blocking EVERYONE from Europe on Vimeo ... or certain countries in Europe? That is strange. I know a lot of TH-cam videos are blocked in Russia these days. I wish that Ukraine war would end so we can all get back to normal. Anyway, Vimeo seems to be going downhill. If a feature does not work, 65% of the time they will not even fix it. Twice on Vimeo my total views dropped from 1200 a day to one to two hundred a day. The first time was after March 2021 for about a year, then I recovered. The second time started about six to eight months ago, I think that's right, they claimed 55 of my videos infringed copyright. I am still not clear if copyright companies notified Vimeo or who it was. So, they restricted all 55 to "private" ... which is like a worldwide block. Two of them were pulling in hundreds of views a day while the other 53 were only getting small views. I am guessing those two popular ones were the ones somebody wanted to shut down, and the other 53 were just to make it look good. One of them I was able to place at Dailymotion, but not the other. As a result, the total daily views on my 800 plus other videos at Vimeo have suffered greatly. That may be yet another reason why that happened ... to render my Vimeo account unpopular. I suspect someone posing as a copyright agent, a phony, was behind it. I can't prove it, but these days takedowns should be unnecessary when blocking is available. Thus, I am always suspicious of takedowns because when I conduct research into the companies, sometimes they simply do not exist on any search engine or else they are old companies that used to patrol the Internet back in the Aughts and early Teens but have since gone inactive or have a different mission these days. I think the agents are actually jealous enemies of mine, posing as agents for non-existing companies or else ones that are defunct. But I can't prove it legally, so the platforms have no choice but to obey, even if criminals are demanding a takedown. I know it is not Thanksgiving in Spain but have a happy holiday of some kind on Thursday, anyway ... make it a feast day! Thanks Mora!
where are the lovely voices these days
This song brings tears to my eyes and evokes a story of lost love; a relationship not of two siblings but children who love as children can. The loss is inconsolable and irrevocable. The pain never dies. Wright was a wonderful writer, singer, and player.
If Pink Floyd had a heart, Richard Wright was it.
Thanks for making such a beautiful video for this unforgettable song.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!
Great presentation of a great song.
Thanks!
weren't the young ladies so sexy then
The model with the Bob Dylan dress is demonstrating a paper disposable dress, a quick trend back then. I think she is Kellie Wilson, a popular U.S. model who lived and worked in London in the late 60s to early 70s.
1972. I’m 19, in the car with my father. This song comes on the radio. Dad listens for a minute, then asks, “Is that Carol Channing?” 😂 Fast forward 52 years. Dad, Carol Channing, and Hurricane Smith are gone, but the song lives on, and I still get a kick every time I think of that moment in the car.
Inesquecível e linda música dos anos 70 80 😢❤
Lee Remick, Hubba Hubba
I always liked Lee Remick in films, always found her attractive. Quite so here and in Blake Edwards' other film made at the same time, The Days of Wine and Roses. What a contrast. Sadly, Lee is no longer with us, dying at the young age of 55.
Thanks for breathing new life into this 1970's classic hit with an intriguing story line.
You're welcome, Ross! Did this one shortly after my previous channel took off big time in spring 2017. Popularity increased my output causing me to look in directions I never had considered. Unfortunately, that also got me into trouble (but not on this video). Thanks!
Does anyone else enjoy this song more than I do? It feels impossible.
What a time was it to be alive...
❤Who is the captain of my heart? ❤
I'm surprised you have gotten no replies. Are you still looking?
@mikemunrowsretro8973 Yes I am still looking and to tell you the truth there is a challenge going on right now among guys to see who is going to be the first one to pick me up with a bouquet of flowers and a box of candy go out on a nice dinner date during the sunset and maybe to a movie or a night out on the town no night cap. The problem is I am in California Crescent City, California to be exact.
@@mikemunrowsretro8973 Yes I am.
This is the birth of Death Metal.
This song was enough to scare anybody to death back in the day!
Beautiful song and video to match. (You know you are in the 1980's when that saxophone cuts in)!
Thanks Ross! Indeed, the sound is so distinctive just hearing the opening is enough to transport me back to a placed where it seems impossible that 38 years could have possibly passed by. It still sounds so modern, but I think the music may have been a bit ahead of its time in 1986 as well. Some of the 80s music and some of the 90s too was highly progressive.
I am legally blind. I understand what it's like to be misunderstood like that. I also know what it's like to be bullied around. I try not to let it get to me, but it's hard when people think that you're blind and stupid
I don't like bullies either. I have been on the receiving end of bullying at different times of my life, even this year. Three cousins of mine I will NEVER again speak to. I should add though I wasn't really doing this video as statement on disability or bullying, but to dramatize the song in the rock opera Tommy. I think though, the band was a bit cruel with this song. But then again, that may have been necessary to show the full extent of Cousin Kevin's malicious nature. What can I say, we learn the worst about human nature from the awful people in our lives who taught it to us so well.
@mikemunrowsretro8973 I like that. You reply has really taught me well. Thank you sir. God bless you and keep you. I hope you have better luck in your life and I hope that you can get on and try to forget the bullies from your cousins. I know it is easier said than done though
Martini shaken, not stirred.... Lounge at its best! Thanks Mike.
You're welcome, Ross! Thanks!
And the Wind Cries Mary. I had forgotten about that one.
My late Mother was in High School During WWII, when I showed her some these clips before she passed on, she said she knew one guy that could dance like these people in the video. She said she could barely keep up with him, so he had to tone it down.
