Imma be honest with you. 99% of the time these hats are being re-sold and not collected. I’m not going to compromise these already brittle hats just to try to clean 20+ years worth of dirt off it. The customer / collector can do that if they really want. But you are still taking a huge gamble either way.

I don't like any method where they soak. The color bleeds out. A black hat may look grey when you are done... and whatever you do, don't put a white hat in with any colored hats. A red hat might bleed into a different color hat, ruining it. I just use a 5 gallon bucket filled with laundry detergent and water, swish one around at a time, maybe scrub with a brush on the inside if needed. Rinse and let dry.

What about the cardboard in the vintage hats? Doesn't it deteriorate
