Although gunnera tinctoria has been banned for a number of years due to its invasive nature in certain parts of the UK, most nurseries circumvented this by simply listing all gunnera as the hitherto perfectly legal gunnera manicata. Great looking bed. Opuntia polyacantha, Opuntia engelmanii, Opuntia fragilis and Opuntia polyacantha x fragilis 'Smithwick' also grow really well for me. The one you forgot the name of is the Echeveria imbricata, commonly sold at B&Q in the outdoor section. Would definitely call Washingtonia filifera an arid plant since it grows in deserts in nature, even the robusta is from semi-arid and dry Mediterranean regions. Yucca filamentosa isn't a desert species though so maybe would do better if you moved it to another part of your garden if it's struggling

This is the market in the UK, essentially. Besides c. cinerea, most copiapoa species can be picked up inexpensively. The growers here are by and large older people who have no idea of the boom in popularity of certain species over in the States.

Everyone I speak to tells me it's not a long term prospect here but I'll enjoy it while it lasts. 😄 It seems to have fully recovered from the spear pull without any intervention. I think I'll tie the fronds together this winter to add protection to the growing point.

I love the idea of having the thermostat. We’re trying to figure out how to heat our greenhouse too. I’m starting to think it’s impossible. Winter can drop to -40c here. 12x12x8 with a 12/12 pitch roof. Our friend got carried away I think. All good ideas for sure. I am putting in 4-5 barrels of water at the north wall; heaters, extra poly. Next year, we will have a better system. Thanks for sharing yours. ❤️🇨🇦

Agree with u on the washingtonia robusta, not had a great deal of luck with them do fine during summer here on the west coast of Scotland, but not so good if u get a really harsh winter! Dont get me wrong if they do get fried with the cold, if they've still got a bit of green in the growing point they will push out new growth rapidly once temps warm up! 🚀 just went and bought approximately a 5ft one from B&M was originally £50 but priced down to a tenner as a few dead fronds on it, plenty of green in centre & really just needed repotted! So result 😁🤞

I agree the damage to the Opuntia is from slugs or snails. They love soft new pads. As far as your Y rostrata, it looks in very poor shape. The central growing point should be producing all blue new leaves. These are very adaptable and do not need a pure gravel growing medium. I hope that its roots are able to reach the native soil underneath. These, as well as the agaves come from areas that experience summer monsoons. So they do best with water in summer and it helps their growth. I would leave it alone and make sure it gets some water. Good luck.

Re Yucca Rostrata. Mine used to do the same with the foliage when they were potted. When I planted it into a deep raised bed with gritty soil this all resolved. I assumed it was due to the suboptimal drainage in the pot. I don't cover the two yucca rostratas in winter yet despite this remains decent with little damage. I suspect the plant is recovering from the poor conditions it was in previously prior to you planting it in the well drained bed. Hopefully this will resolve in time🤞
