Freelancer Opportunities in WordPress
Say thanks and learn more about our podcast sponsor Omnisend. (your.omnisend.com/WPMinute)
In this episode of WP Minute+, I sat down with Kurt von Ahnen, a WordPress agency owner and e-learning specialist. We dove deep into the world of web agency sales, particularly focusing on enterprise clients and the often-overlooked opportunities in the WordPress space.
Kurt's journey into WordPress is fascinating - he transitioned from a career in the automotive industry to web development, driven by a desire for better work-life balance. What struck me most was how he leveraged his experience in customer service and project management to build a successful agency. Kurt's approach to targeting enterprise clients for e-learning solutions using WordPress and Lifter LMS is a great example of niching down.
Kurt's perspective on WordPress diverse capabilities and the need for clear messaging to different user groups is spot-on. I appreciated his balanced view on WordPress's strengths and the importance of focusing on solving client problems rather than getting caught up in technical debates.
We also touched on the role of AI in e-learning and content creation. Kurt's cautious yet practical approach to AI tools reflects a growing sentiment in the industry - AI can be a powerful aid, but it requires expertise and careful curation to be truly effective.
Key takeaways for WordPress professionals:
1. Transition from freelancing to agency work by leveraging your strengths and building a network of specialists.
2. Target enterprise clients by solving specific pain points, like replacing expensive legacy systems with WordPress solutions.
3. Focus on understanding and addressing client needs rather than getting caught up in technical debates about WordPress.
4. Use your expertise to guide clients towards appropriate solutions, avoiding unnecessary customizations early in projects.
5. Engage with the WordPress community through meetups and WordCamps to expand your network and opportunities.
6. Approach AI tools with caution, using them to enhance your work rather than replace your expertise.
7. Consider specializing in niche areas like e-learning to differentiate your agency.

    I think that Jamie's recent 3 month subscriber explosion and his very pro Gutenberg videos helped him get that job. Got to give it to him, I watched those "do this amazing effect in Gutenberg" videos & they almost made me interested in Gutenberg again...but at end of videos, it's usually "sadly this doesn't work on mobile or not in this or that browser" and no way to fix it inside of Gutenberg... because it's still Gutenberg 😄

    Wow wow Matt I don't think people are saying Core needs to do everything, but some basic CMS stuff should be added so we're not dependent on 3rd party plugins that might stop being developed. Most of the stuff that's in WP Extended for example should be Core, it seems that plugin has re-started recently, but it seemed death for half a year before that.

  • @nickm1049

    Maybe agencies shouldn't be the focus, but we don't want WP to loose in relevance, because that will hurt WP as a free platform, but also hurt Automattic's paid for products...so maybe to save WP, listening to freelancers/agencies wouldn't be a bad thing to keep WP relevant to what's happening in the wider online world

  • @nickm1049

    WP says it's blog first, but the default themes for years now line up more with what Kevin says, making more classic brochure websites. Last true blog first theme was Twenty Sixteen. This switch started in 2012 when they removed the Link Manager imo

      Very much thinking the same thing myself. Listening to Matt's synopsis of the whole top down leadership situation and it gels a little with what my thinking on all this has been for a long time, that there are are many in core that are impervious to listening to the real needs of profesionals. If KG's offering is so good it can't be ignored is there a chance for some change on this? It's a conversation that needs to be had, because at some stage someone somewhere will have to come up with a solution. Whether that's within Wordpress or elsewhere remains to be seen.

    • @wptonic
      @wptonic หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@vaughanprint I agree and to some extent, I'm personally getting a bit indifferent to the whole situation, which, in the long term, is the biggest danger to WordPress.

    • @vaughanprint
      @vaughanprint หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wptonic the indifference is what will do for it, if it gets that bad and more attractive alternatives become available. Being in the older age bracket and moving on, younger punters won’t have the same emotional attachment to the old dog that WP is heading towards.
