100% agree with your video. I am following starcraft2 since its release and it suffered from a similar trend, where offmeta strats were subsequently bullied out of the game to serve pro's but the game became stale and predictable. I think off-meta and even slightly OP stuff belongs in games like these and people should learn how to adapt. Only if something really completely off the charts and a really big problem for long, should the devs get into it and have a look.

Quick walling should be removed from games because it breaks the game logic and punishes the attacker for doing the right thing. In strategy games, a player that couldn't foresee the opponents move and got caught off guard should always take a huge penalty for it. The solution is fairly simple imo. As long as the construction is less than half complete, the tile remains non-blocking for unit movement. After all, its just an open construction site. On top of that, i would enforce another rule. Building defensive structures should always take longer than building 1 offensive unit + its walking time across the map. This means that if a player scouted his enemy and saw that they were defenseless, and chose to switch from eco'ing to building military, then the opponent shouldn't be able to build castles and towers in the time it takes for the enemy units to walk into their base. They failed to foresee the attack...and the attacking side should get the reward of having an "upper hand" for their unexpected attack.

I don't get how patching this by making unfinished buildings not blocking passage is an unsolvable programming hurdle, rather than Microsoft not caring.

Blast form the past of 99' when I had a high end laptop, refresh rate with max units was all good but had nver played online besides LAN.

Damn, the AoE I guy has earned some really decent money (for where he lives). Had no idea.

To be fair, the code / algorithm is exactly the same for any tile size. It's just more "expensive" to compute. Ping also wasn't high back in the days. It all depended on your connection type, how far , how many hops away your target is. Only the bandwidth was very low.

You know a more modern RTS could have a formalised equivalent for this, have your troops through up "Danger! Minefield" signs in an area. Never mind if there's really mines there, your enemy still needs demining gear of some sort

Imagine a tournament with all AOE games involved. You have to pick games like maps :D I'd love to see it, although I am mostly interested in AOE2

Should not be hard to have a show match (series) with this. DauT vs. TaToH would be interesting. I think TheViper could still beat them if he trained enough at least one of AoE 1/3 and AoM. TheMista was/is a decent AoE 2 player (was 2k-2k1 on Voobly and also has played a bit on DE), but since the last 3 you mentioned are top 8 AoE 2 players, that would only matter against someone who is not a main AoE 2 player. There's also a few Vietnamese players like CooL and saymyname who have reached 2k4-2k5 in in AoE 2 and are very good in AoE 1, who have also played AoE 4 at a decent level, so I can imagine that in a league format where you play Play all 5s with all 5 titles, they could get good results. Already back in 2021 I thought about that we should have an AOElympics with all titles included, which is something different, but having players of all titles together someohow in an event would feel nice. But that would require a huge prize pool, the largest amount of admin work ever and probably 3+ months with multiple rounds of live matches every single day. Similar to the real Olympics, just that an AoE match is 2-3 h on average and most sports are between a few minutes and 1.5 h.

Theoratically, you could still count AoE Online as it was actually in development by Ensemble Studios's succesor studio (Robot Entertainment) :D Edit: thinking about it, you could make this Bo5 into individual Bo3's for each game

Grunt would be the best Age of Empires player if you had him play every single new one during his prime.

I'm thinking the vietnamese guys - CooL and saymyname - would be in the contention. They would smoke anyone in AoE 1, both reached a high level in AoE 2, and also played solid AoE 4. Not sure about AoM and AoE 3 though.

I would also say DauT, I mean wasnt there one time when he got bored, went to some Civilization tournament or something and almost won it?
